Understanding iron based superconductors requires high quality impurity free single crystals. So far they have been elusive for beta-FeSe and extraction of intrinsic materials properties has been compromised by several magnetic impurity phases. Herein we report synchrotron - clean beta-FeSe superconducting single crystals grown via LiCl/CsCl flux method. Phase purity yields evidence for a defect induced weak ferromagnetism that coexists with superconductivity below Tc. In contrast to Fe1+yTe - based superconductors, our results reveal that the interstitial Fe(2) site is not occupied and that all contribution to density of states at the Fermi level must come from in-plane Fe(1).

In this letter, we report growth and characterization of bulk Bi2Se3 single crystals. The studied Bi2Se3 crystals are grown by self flux method through solid state reaction from high temperature (950C) melt of constituent elements and slow cooling (2C/hour). The resultant crystals are shiny and grown in [00l] direction, as evidenced from surface XRD. Detailed Reitveld analysis of PXRD (powder x-ray diffraction) of the crystals showed that these are crystallized in rhombohedral crystal structure with space group of R3m (D5) and the lattice parameters are a = 4.14(2)A, b = 4.14 (2) A and c = 28.7010(7) A. Temperature versus resistivity (R-T) plots revealed metallic conduction down to 2K, with typical room temperature resistivity (R300K) of around 0.53 mohm-cm and residual resistivity of 0.12 mohm-cm. Resistivity under magnetic field ] measurements exhibited large +Ve magneto resistance right from 2K to 200K. Isothermal magneto resistance [RH] measurements at 2K, 100K and 200K exhibited magneto resistance (MR) of up to 240, 130 and 60 percent respectively at 14 Tesla. Further the MR plots are non saturating and linear with field at all temperature. At 2K the MR plots showed clear quantum oscillations at above say 10 Tesla applied field. Also the Kohler plots i.e., were seen consolidating on one plot. Interestingly, the studied Bi2Se3 single crystal exhibited the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations (SdH) at 2K under different applied magnetic fields ranging from 4Tesla to 14 Tesla

Here we report the growth of sub-millimeter MgB2 single crystals of various shapes under high pressure in Mg-B-N system. Structure refinement using a single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis gives lattice parameters a=3.0851(5) A and c=3.5201(5) A with small reliability factors (Rw =0.025, R=0.018), which enables us to analyze the Fourier and Fourier difference maps. The maps clearly show the B sp2 orbitals and covalency of the B-B bonds. The sharp superconducting transitions at Tc =38.1-38.3K were obtained in both magnetization (DTc =0.6K) and resistivity (DTc <0.3K) measurements. Resistivity measurements with magnetic fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the Mg and B sheets reveal the anisotropic nature of this compound, with upper critical field anisotropy ratio of about 2.7.
Single crystal of YCoGa5 has been grown via Ga self-flux. In this paper, we report the single crystal growth, crystallographic parameters, resistivity, heat capacity, and band structure results of YCoGa5. YCoGa5 accommodates the HoCoGa5 type structure (space group P4/mmm (No. 123), Z = 1, a = 4.2131(6) A, c = 6.7929(13) A, which is isostructural to the extensively studied heavy fermion superconductor system CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh, Ir) and the unconventional superconductor PuCoGa5 with Tc = 18.5 K. No superconductivity is observed down to 1.75 K. Band structure calculation results show that its band at the Fermi level is mainly composed of Co-3d and Ga-4p electrons states, which explains its similarity of physical properties to YbCoGa5 and LuCoGa5.
The iron arsenide Eu3Fe2O5Fe2As2 was synthesized at 1173-1373 K in a resistance furnace and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction with Rietveld analysis: Sr3Fe2O5Cu2S2-type, I4/mmm, a = 406.40(1) pm, c = 2646.9(1) pm. Layers of edge-sharing FeAs4/4 tetrahedra are separated by perovskite-like oxide blocks. No structural transition occurs in the temperature range from 10 to 300 K. Magnetic measurements have revealed Curie-Weiss behavior with an effective magnetic moment of 7.79 muB per europium atom in agreement with the theoretical value of 7.94 muB for Eu2+. A drop in the magnetic susceptibility at 5 K indicates possible antiferromagnetic ordering. 151Eu and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopic measurements have confirmed a beginning cooperative magnetic phenomenon by showing significantly broadened spectra at 4.8 K compared to those at 78 K.

Sizable single crystals of $BaFe_2As_2$ have been grown with self-flux method. The crystals are plate-like with c-axis perpendicular to the plane. The size can be as large as 3 x 5 x 0.2 $mm^3$. The resistivity anisotropy ($rho_c/rho_{ab}$) is as large as about 150, and independent of temperature. The transport in ab plane and along c-axis direction shares the same scattering mechanism. In contrast to the magnetic behavior of polycrystalline samples, no Curie-Weiss behavior are observed, a temperature linear dependent susceptibility occurs above spin-density-wave (SDW) transition. The susceptibility behavior is very similar to that of antiferromagnetic SDW chromium. Magnetic behavior of single crystal definitely gives evidence for existence of local moment except for the contribution to susceptibility from itinerant electrons. A resistivity minimum strongly dependent on magnetic field is observed. A log(1/T) divergency, similar to that of the underdoped cuprates, happens at low temperature. Here we first present intrinsic transport and magnetic properties, and their anisotropy from high quality single crystal.
