NoSQL systems are more and more deployed as back-end infrastructure for large-scale distributed online platforms like Google, Amazon or Facebook. Their applicability results from the fact that most services of online platforms access the stored data objects via their primary key. However, NoSQL systems do not efficiently support services referring more than one data object, e.g. the term-based search for data objects. To address this issue we propose our architecture based on an inverted index on top of a NoSQL system. For queries comprising more than one term, distributed indices yield a limited performance in large distributed systems. We propose two extensions to cope with this challenge. Firstly, we store index entries not only for single term but also for a selected set of term combinations depending on their popularity derived from a query history. Secondly, we additionally cache popular keys on gateway nodes, which are a common concept in real-world systems, acting as interface for services when accessing data objects in the back end. Our results show that we can significantly reduces the bandwidth consumption for processing queries, with an acceptable, marginal increase in the load of the gateway nodes.

This work presents a general query term weighting approach based on query performance prediction (QPP). To this end, a given term is weighed according to its predicted effect on query performance. Such an effect is assumed to be manifested in the responses made by the underlying retrieval method for the original query and its (simple) variants in the form of a single-term expanded query. Focusing on search re-ranking as the underlying application, the effectiveness of the proposed term weighting approach is demonstrated using several state-of-the-art QPP methods evaluated over TREC corpora.
Finding patterns in data and being able to retrieve information from those patterns is an important task in Information retrieval. Complex search requirements which are not fulfilled by simple string matching and require exploring certain patterns in data demand a better query engine that can support searching via structured queries. In this article, we built a structured query engine which supports searching data through structured queries on the lines of ElasticSearch. We will show how we achieved real time indexing and retrieving of data through a RESTful API and how complex queries can be created and processed using efficient data structures we created for storing the data in structured way. Finally, we will conclude with an example of movie recommendation system built on top of this query engine.
Caching search results is employed in information retrieval systems to expedite query processing and reduce back-end server workload. Motivated by the observation that queries belonging to different topics have different temporal-locality patterns, we investigate a novel caching model called STD (Static-Topic-Dynamic cache). It improves traditional SDC (Static-Dynamic Cache) that stores in a static cache the results of popular queries and manages the dynamic cache with a replacement policy for intercepting the temporal variations in the query stream. Our proposed caching scheme includes another layer for topic-based caching, where the entries are allocated to different topics (e.g., weather, education). The results of queries characterized by a topic are kept in the fraction of the cache dedicated to it. This permits to adapt the cache-space utilization to the temporal locality of the various topics and reduces cache misses due to those queries that are neither sufficiently popular to be in the static portion nor requested within short-time intervals to be in the dynamic portion. We simulate different configurations for STD using two real-world query streams. Experiments demonstrate that our approach outperforms SDC with an increase up to 3% in terms of hit rates, and up to 36% of gap reduction w.r.t. SDC from the theoretical optimal caching algorithm.
The Transformer-Kernel (TK) model has demonstrated strong reranking performance on the TREC Deep Learning benchmark---and can be considered to be an efficient (but slightly less effective) alternative to BERT-based ranking models. In this work, we extend the TK architecture to the full retrieval setting by incorporating the query term independence assumption. Furthermore, to reduce the memory complexity of the Transformer layers with respect to the input sequence length, we propose a new Conformer layer. We show that the Conformers GPU memory requirement scales linearly with input sequence length, making it a more viable option when ranking long documents. Finally, we demonstrate that incorporating explicit term matching signal into the model can be particularly useful in the full retrieval setting. We present preliminary results from our work in this paper.

Authenticated data storage on an untrusted platform is an important computing paradigm for cloud applications ranging from big-data outsourcing, to cryptocurrency and certificate transparency log. These modern applications increasingly feature update-intensive workloads, whereas existing authenticated data structures (ADSs) designed with in-place updates are inefficient to handle such workloads. In this paper, we address this issue and propose a novel authenticated log-structured merge tree (eLSM) based key-value store by leveraging Intel SGX enclaves. We present a system design that runs the code of eLSM store inside enclave. To circumvent the limited enclave memory (128 MB with the latest Intel CPUs), we propose to place the memory buffer of the eLSM store outside the enclave and protect the buffer using a new authenticated data structure by digesting individual LSM-tree levels. We design protocols to support query authentication in data integrity, completeness (under range queries), and freshness. The proof in our protocol is made small by including only the Merkle proofs at selective levels. We implement eLSM on top of Google LevelDB and Facebook RocksDB with minimal code change and performance interference. We evaluate the performance of eLSM under the YCSB workload benchmark and show a performance advantage of up to 4.5X speedup.
