Hilbert space combines the properties of two fundamentally different types of mathematical spaces: vector space and metric space. While the vector-space aspects of Hilbert space, such as formation of linear combinations of state vectors, are routinely used in quantum mechanics, the metric-space aspects of Hilbert space are much less exploited. Here we show that a suitable metric stratifies Fock space into concentric spheres. Maximum and minimum distances between wave functions are derived and geometrically interpreted in terms of this metric. Unlike the usual Hilbert-space analysis, our results apply also to the reduced space of only ground-state wave functions and to that of particle densities, each of which forms a metric space but not a Hilbert space. The Hohenberg-Kohn mapping between densities and ground-state wave functions, which is highly complex and nonlocal in coordinate description, is found, for three different model systems, to be very simple in metric space, where it is represented by a monotonic mapping of vicinities onto vicinities. Surprisingly, it is also found to be nearly linear over a wide range of parameters.

A new idea for the quantization of dynamic systems, as well as space time itself, using a stochastic metric is proposed. The quantum mechanics of a mass point is constructed on a space time manifold using a stochastic metric. A stochastic metric space is, in brief, a metric space whose metric tensor is given stochastically according to some appropriate distribution function. A mathematically consistent model of a space time manifold equipping a stochastic metric is proposed in this report. The quantum theory in the local Minkowski space can be recognized as a classical theory on the stochastic Lorentz-metric-space. A stochastic calculus on the space time manifold is performed using white noise functional analysis. A path-integral quantization is introduced as a stochastic integration of a function of the action integral, and it is shown that path-integrals on the stochastic metric space are mathematically well-defined for large variety of potential functions. The Newton--Nelson equation of motion can also be obtained from the Newtonian equation of motion on the stochastic metric space. It is also shown that the commutation relation required under the canonical quantization is consistent with the stochastic quantization introduced in this report. The quantum effects of general relativity are also analyzed through natural use of the stochastic metrics. Some example of quantum effects on the universe is discussed.
We introduce a framework for constructing a quantum error correcting code from any classical error correcting code. This includes CSS codes and goes beyond the stabilizer formalism to allow quantum codes to be constructed from classical codes that are not necessarily linear or self-orthogonal (Fig. 1). We give an algorithm that explicitly constructs quantum codes with linear distance and constant rate from classical codes with a linear distance and rate. As illustrations for small size codes, we obtain Steanes $7-$qubit code uniquely from Hammings [7,4,3] code, and obtain other error detecting quantum codes from other explicit classical codes of length 4 and 6. Motivated by quantum LDPC codes and the use of physics to protect quantum information, we introduce a new 2-local frustration free quantum spin chain Hamiltonian whose ground space we analytically characterize completely. By mapping classical codewords to basis states of the ground space, we utilize our framework to demonstrate that the ground space contains explicit quantum codes with linear distance. This side-steps the Bravyi-Terhal no-go theorem because our work allows for more general quantum codes beyond the stabilizer and/or linear codes. We hesitate to call this an example of {it subspace} quantum LDPC code with linear distance.

A resolution of the quantum measurement problem(s) using the consistent histories interpretation yields in a rather natural way a restriction on what an observer can know about a quantum system, one that is also consistent with some results in quantum information theory. This analysis provides a quantum mechanical understanding of some recent work that shows that certain kinds of quantum behavior are exhibited by a fully classical model if by hypothesis an observers knowledge of its state is appropriately limited.
In physics, experiments ultimately inform us as to what constitutes a good theoretical model of any physical concept: physical space should be no exception. The best picture of physical space in Newtonian physics is given by the configuration space of a free particle (or the center of mass of a closed system of particles). This configuration space (as well as phase space), can be constructed as a representation space for the relativity symmetry. From the corresponding quantum symmetry, we illustrate the construction of a quantum configuration space, similar to that of quantum phase space, and recover the classical picture as an approximation through a contraction of the (relativity) symmetry and its representations. The quantum Hilbert space reduces into a sum of one-dimensional representations for the observable algebra, with the only admissible states given by coherent states and position eigenstates for the phase and configuration space pictures, respectively. This analysis, founded firmly on known physics, provides a quantum picture of physical space beyond that of a finite-dimensional manifold, and provides a crucial first link for any theoretical model of quantum spacetime at levels beyond simple quantum mechanics. It also suggests looking at quantum physics from a different perspective.
