We have observed a softening of phonons and a structural phase transition in a superconducting Ba0.59K0.41BiO3 (Tc = 31 K) single crystal using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The soft phonon occurs for the [111] transverse acoustic mode at the zone boundary. The phonon energies in this vicinity are found to continuously decrease with decreasing temperature from above room temperature to 200 K, where a structural phase transition from cubic to tetragonal symmetry occurs. The overall results are consistent with previous data that reported phonon softening and a (0.5, 0.5, 0.5) type superstructure in several Ba1-xKxBiO3 systems. However, we also find weak (0.5, 0.5, 0) type superstructure peaks that reveal an additional component to the modulation. No significant change related to the superconductivity was observed for the soft phonon energies or linewidths.

Soft phonon behavior associated with a structural phase transition from the low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) phase ($Bmab$ symmetry) to the low-temperature-tetragonal (LTT) phase ($P4_{2}/ncm$ symmetry) was investigated in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$ using neutron scattering. As temperature decreases, the TO-mode at $Z$-point softens and approaches to zero energy around $T_{rm d2}=62$ K, where the LTO -- LTT transition occurs. Below $T_{rm d2}$, the phonon hardens quite rapidly and its energy almost saturates below 50 K. At $T_{rm d2}$, the energy dispersion of the soft phonon along in-plane direction significantly changes while the dispersion along out-of-plane direction is almost temperature independent. Coexistence between the LTO phase and the LTT phase, seen in both the soft phonon spectra and the peak profiles of Bragg reflection, is discussed in context of the order of structural phase transitions.

Vibrational properties of iron-chalcogenide superconductor K$_{0.75}$Fe$_{1.75}$Se$_{2}$ with $T_{c}sim$ 30 K have been measured by Raman and optical spectroscopies over temperature range of 3-300 K. Sample undergoes textit{I4/m} $to $ textit{I4} structural phase transition accompanied by loss of inversion symmetry at $T_{1}$, below 250 K, observed as appearance of new fully-symmetric Raman mode at $sim$ 165 cm$^{-1}$. Small vibration mode anomalies are also observed at $T_{2}sim$ 160 K. From first-principles vibrational analysis of antiferromagnetic K$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_{2}$ utilizing pseudopotentials all observed Raman and infrared modes have been assigned and the displacement patterns of the new Raman mode identified as involving predominantly the Se atoms.
We have performed extensive ab initio calculations to investigate phonon dynamics and their possible role in superconductivity in BaFe2As2 and related systems. The calculations are compared to inelastic neutron scattering data that offer improved resolution over published data [Mittal et al., PRB 78 104514 (2008)], in particular at low frequencies. Effects of structural phase transition and full/partial structural relaxation, with and without magnetic ordering, on the calculated vibrational density of states are reported. Phonons are best reproduced using either the relaxed magnetic structures or the experimental cell. Several phonon branches are affected by the subtle structural changes associated with the transition from the tetragonal to the orthorhombic phase. Effects of phonon induced distortions on the electronic and spin structure have been investigated. It is found that for some vibrational modes, there is a significant change of the electronic distribution and spin populations around the Fermi level. A peak at 20 meV in the experimental data falls into the pseudo-gap region of the calculation. This was also the case reported in our recent work combined with an empirical parametric calculation [Mittal et al., PRB 78 104514 (2008)]. The combined evidence for the coupling of electronic and spin degrees of freedom with phonons is relevant to the current interest in superconductivity in BaFe2As2 and related systems.
Using small-angle neutron scattering, we investigated the behavior of a metastable vortex lattice state in MgB2 as it is driven towards equilibrium by an AC magnetic field. This shows an activated behavior, where the AC field amplitude and cycle count are equivalent to, respectively, an effective temperature and time. The activation barrier increases as the metastable state is suppressed, corresponding to an aging of the vortex lattice. Furthermore, we find a cross-over from a partial to a complete suppression of metastable domains depending on the AC field amplitude, which may empirically be described by a single free parameter. This represents a novel kind of collective vortex behavior, most likely governed by the nucleation and growth of equilibrium vortex lattice domains.

We report $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) / nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies on LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$. There are two superconducting domes in this material. The first one appears at 0.03 $leq$ $x$ $leq$ 0.2 with $T_{rm c}$$^{max}$ = 27 K, and the second one at 0.25 $leq$ $x$ $leq$ 0.75 with $T_{rm c}$$^{max}$ = 30 K. By NMR and TEM, we demonstrate that a $C4$-to-$C2$ structural phase transition (SPT) takes place above both domes, with the transition temperature $T_{rm s}$ varying strongly with $x$. In the first dome, the SPT is followed by an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition, but neither AF order nor low-energy spin fluctuations are found in the second dome. In LaFeAsO$_{0.97}$F$_{0.03}$, we find that AF order and superconductivity coexist microscopically via $^{75}$As nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/$T_1$) measurements. In the coexisting region, 1/$T_1$ decreases at $T_{rm c}$ but becomes to be proportional to $T$ below 0.6$T_{rm c}$, indicating gapless excitations. Therefore, in contrast to the early reports, the obtained phase diagram for $x leq$ 0.2 is quite similar to the doped BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ system. The electrical resistivity in the second dome can be fitted by $rho = {{rho }_{0}}+A{{T}^{n}}$ with $n$ = 1 and a maximal coefficient $A$ at around $x_{opt}$ = 0.5$sim$0.55 where $T_{rm s}$ extrapolates to zero and $T_{rm c}$ is the maximal, which suggest the importance of quantum critical fluctuations associated with the SPT. We have constructed a complete phase diagram of LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$, which provides insight into the relationship between SPT, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity.
