We have investigated the spin fluctuations in the langasite compound Ba3NbFe3Si2O14 in both the ordered state and as a function of temperature. The low temperature magnetic structure is defined by a spiral phase characterized by magnetic Bragg peaks at q=(0,0,tau ~ 1/7) onset at TN=27 K as previously reported by Marty et al. The nature of the fluctuations and temperature dependence of the order parameter is consistent with a classical second order phase transition for a two dimensional triangular antiferromagnet. We will show that the physical properties and energy scales including the ordering wavevector, Curie-Weiss temperature, and the spin-waves can be explained through the use of only symmetric exchange constants without the need for the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This is accomplished through a set of ``helical exchange pathways along the c direction imposed by the chiral crystal structure and naturally explains the magnetic diffuse scattering which displays a strong vector chirality up to high temperatures well above the ordering temperature. This illustrates a strong coupling between magnetic and crystalline chirality in this compound.

We report magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and muon spin relaxation (muSR) experiments on the triangular antiferromagnet La2Ca2MnO7 which develops a genuine two-dimensional, three-sublattice sqrt{3} times sqrt{3} magnetic order below T_N = 2.8 K. From the susceptibility and specific heat data an estimate of the exchange interaction is derived. A value for the spin-wave gap is obtained from the latter data. The analysis of a previously reported inelastic neutron scattering study yields values for the exchange and spin-wave gap compatible with the results obtained from macroscopic measurements. An appreciable entropy is still missing at 10 K that may be ascribed to intense short-range correlations. The critical paramagnetic fluctuations extend far above T_N, and can be partly understood in terms of two-dimensional spin-wave excitations. While no spontaneous muSR field is observed below T_N, persistent spin dynamics is found. Short-range correlations are detected in this temperature range. Their relation to a possible molecular spin substructure and the observed exotic spin fluctuations is discussed.
The spin-web compound Cu3TeO6, belongs to an intriguing group of materials where magnetism is governed by 3d9 copper Cu2+ ions. This compound has been sparsely experimentally studied and we here present the first investigation of its local magnetic properties using muon-spin relaxation/rotation ({mu}+SR). Our results show a clear long-range 3D magnetic order below TN as indicated by clear zero-field (ZF) muon-precessions. At TN = 61.7 K a very sharp transition is observed in the weak transverse-field (wTF) as well as ZF data. Contrary to suggestions by susceptibility measurements and inelastic neutron scattering, we find no evidence for either static or dynamic (on the time-scale of {mu}+SR) spin-correlations above TN.
We have used soft x-ray magnetic diffraction at the Fe3+ L2,3 edges to examine to what extent the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction in Ba3NbFe3Si2O14 influences its low temperature magnetic structure. A modulated component of the moments along the c-axis is present, adding to the previously proposed helical magnetic configuration of co-planar moments in the a,b-plane. This leads to a helical-butterfly structure and suggests that both the multi-axial in-plane and the uniform out-of-plane Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya vectors are relevant. A non zero orbital magnetic signal is also observed at the oxygen K edge, which reflects the surprisingly strong hybridization between iron 3d and oxygen 2p states, given the nominal spherical symmetry of the Fe3+ half filled shell.
The 3$d$-electronic spin dynamics and the magnetic order in Fe$_3$PO$_4$O$_3$ were investigated by muon spin rotation and relaxation ($mu$SR) and $^{57}$Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy. Zero-field (ZF)-$mu$SR and $^{57}$Fe Mossbauer studies confirm static long range magnetic ordering below $T_{mathrm{N}}$ $approx$ 164,K. Both transverse-field (TF) and ZF-$mu$SR results evidence 100% magnetic volume fraction in the ordered state. The ZF-$mu$SR time spectra can be best described by a Bessel function, which is consistent with the helical magnetic structure proposed by neutron scattering experiments. The Mossbauer spectra are described in detail by considering the specific angular distribution of the local hyperfine field $B_{mathrm{hyp}}$ with respect to the local electric field gradient. The $mu$SR spin-lattice relaxation rate exhibits two peaks: One at the magnetic ordering temperature related to critical magnetic fluctuations and another peak at 35,K signaling the presence of a secondary low energy scale in Fe$_3$PO$_4$O$_3$.

We report susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements on NaCu$_2$O$_2$, a spin-1/2 chain compound isostructural to LiCu$_2$O$_2$, which has been extensively investigated. Below 13 K, we find a long-range ordered, incommensurate magnetic helix state with a propagation vector similar to that of LiCu$_2$O$_2$. In contrast to the Li analogue, substitutional disorder is negligible in NaCu$_2$O$_2$. We can thus rule out that the helix is induced by impurities, as was claimed on the basis of prior work on LiCu$_2$O$_2$. A spin Hamiltonian with frustrated longer-range exchange interactions provides a good description of both the ordered state and the paramagnetic susceptibility.
