The quasispecies model describes processes related to the origin of life and viral evolutionary dynamics. We discuss how the error catastrophe that reflects the transition from localized to delocalized quasispecies population is affected by catalytic replication of different reaction orders. Specifically, we find that 2nd order mechanisms lead to 1st order discontinuous phase transitions in the viable population fraction, and conclude that the higher the interaction the lower the transition. We discuss potential implications for understanding the replication of highly mutating RNA viruses.

We present a theory of the multi-threshold second-order phase transition, and experimentally demonstrate the multi-threshold second-order phase transition phenomenon. With carefully selected parameters, in an external cavity diode laser system, we observe second-order phase transition with multiple (three or four) thresholds in the measured power-current-temperature three dimensional phase diagram. Such controlled death and revival of second-order phase transition sheds new insight into the nature of ubiquitous second-order phase transition. Our theory and experiment show that the single threshold second-order phase transition is only a special case of the more general multi-threshold second-order phase transition, which is an even richer phenomenon.
We consider a system of mutually interacting spin 1/2 embedded in a transverse magnetic field which undergo a second order quantum phase transition. We analyze the entanglement properties and the spin squeezing of the ground state and show that, contrarily to the one-dimensional case, a cusp-like singularity appears at the critical point $lambda_c$, in the thermodynamic limit. We also show that there exists a value $lambda_0 geq lambda_c$ above which the ground state is not spin squeezed despite a nonvanishing concurrence.
We present a very minimal model for baryogenesis by a dark first-order phase transition. It employs a new dark $SU(2)_{D}$ gauge group with two doublet Higgs bosons, two lepton doublets, and two singlets. The singlets act as a neutrino portal that transfer the generated asymmetry to the Standard Model. The model predicts $Delta N_text{eff} = 0.09-0.13$ detectable by future experiments as well as possible signals from exotic decays of the Higgs and $Z$ bosons and stochastic gravitational waves.
The insulator-metal transition in hydrogen is one of the most outstanding problems in condensed matter physics. The high-pressure metallic phase is now predicted to be liquid atomic from T=0 K to very high temperatures. We have conducted measurements of optical properties of hot dense hydrogen in the region of 1.1-1.7 Mbar and up to 2200 K. We observe a first-order phase transition accompanied by changes in transmittance and reflectance characteristic of a metal. The phase line of this transition has a negative slope in agreement with theories of the so-called plasma phase transition.
The search for a first-order phase transition in strongly interacting matter is one of the major objectives in the exploration of the phase diagram of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). In the present work we investigate dilepton radiation from the hot and dense fireballs created in Au-Au collisions at projectile energies of 1-2 $A$GeV for potential signatures of a first-order transition. Toward this end, we employ a hydrodynamic simulation with two different equations of state, with and without a phase transition. The latter is constrained by susceptibilities at vanishing chemical potential from lattice-QCD as well as neutron star properties, while the former is implemented via modification of the mean-fields in the quark phase. We find that the latent heat involved in the first-order transition leads to a substantial increase in the low-mass thermal emission signal, by about a factor of two above the cross-over scenario.
