Over the past decade, new data have become available from DESY, Jefferson Lab, Fermilab, and RHIC that connect to parton propagation and hadron formation. Semi-inclusive DIS on nuclei, the Drell-Yan reaction, and heavy-ion collisions all bring different kinds of information on parton propagation within a medium, while the most direct information on hadron formation comes from the DIS data. Over the next decade one can hope to begin to understand these data within a unified picture. We briefly survey the most relevant data and the common elements of the physics picture, then highlight the new Jefferson Lab data from CLAS, and close with prospects for the future.

Using QCD-inspired time dependent cross sections for pre-hadrons we provide a combined analysis of available experimental data on hadron attenuation in DIS off nuclei as measured by HERMES with 12 and 27 GeV and by EMC with 100 and 280 GeV lepton beam energies. We extract the complete four-dimensional evolution of the pre-hadrons using the JETSET-part of PYTHIA. We find a remarkable sensitivity of nuclear attenuation data to the details of the time-evolution of cross sections. Only cross sections evolving linearly in time describe the available data in a wide kinematical regime. Predictions for experimental conditions at JLAB (5 and 12 GeV beam energies) are included.

Studies of the production of heavy-flavour baryons are of prominent importance to investigate hadronization mechanisms at the LHC, in particular through the study of the evolution of the baryon-over-meson production ratio. Measurements performed in pp and p--Pb collisions at the LHC have revealed unexpected features, qualitatively similar to what was observed in heavy-ion collisions and, in the charm sector, not in line with the expectations based on previous measurements from $rm e^+e^-$ colliders and in ep collisions. These results suggest that charmed baryon formation might not be universal and that the baryon-over-meson ratio depends on the collision system or multiplicity. A review of ALICE measurements of charmed baryons, including $rm Lambda_c^+/D^0$ as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in pp, p--Pb and Pb--Pb collisions, $rm Sigma_c^{0, +, ++}/D^0$ and $rm Xi_c^{0, +}/D^0$ as a function of $p_{rm T}$ in pp collisions and $rm Gamma(Xi_c^0rightarrowXi^-e^+ u_e)/Gamma(Xi_c^0rightarrowXi^-pi^+)$, will be presented. Comparison to phenomenological models will be also discussed. Emphasis will be given to the discussion of the impact of these studies on the understanding of hadronization processes.
We address the physics case related to the studies of ultra-peripheral pH, pPb, PbH, and PbPb collisions in the fixed-target mode at the LHC. In particular, we discuss how one can measure the gluon generalized parton distribution E_g(x,xi,t) in exclusive J/psi photoproduction with a transversely polarized hydrogen target.

Neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering ($ u {rm A}_{el}$) provides a unique laboratory to study the quantum-mechanical (QM) coherency effects in electroweak interactions. The deviations of the cross-sections from those of completely coherent systems can be quantitatively characterized through a coherency parameter $alpha ( q^2 )$. The relations between $alpha$ and the underlying nuclear physics in terms of nuclear form factors are derived. The dependence of cross-section on $alpha ( q^2 )$ for the various neutrino sources is presented. The $alpha ( q^2 )$-values are evaluated from the measured data of the COHERENT CsI and Ar experiments. Complete coherency and decoherency conditions are excluded by the CsI data with $p {=} 0.004$ at $q^2 {=} 3.1 {times} 10^{3} ~ {rm MeV^2}$ and with $p {=} 0.016$ at $q^2 {=} 2.3 {times} 10^{3} ~ {rm MeV^2}$, respectively, verifying that both QM superpositions and nuclear many-body effects contribute to $ u {rm A}_{el}$ interactions.

We extract the Bjorken integral Gamma^{p-n}_1 in the range 0.17 < Q^2 < 1.10 GeV^2 from inclusive scattering of polarized electrons by polarized protons, deuterons and 3He, for the region in which the integral is dominated by nucleon resonances. These data bridge the domains of the hadronic and partonic descriptions of the nucleon. In combination with earlier measurements at higher Q^2, we extract the non-singlet twist-4 matrix element f_2.
