We present a proper motion survey of the Galactic plane, using IPHAS data and POSS-I Schmidt plate data as a first epoch, that probes down to proper motions below 50 milliarcseconds per year. The IPHAS survey covers the northern plane ($|b| < 5^{circ}$) with CCD photometry in the $r$, $i$ and H${alpha}$ passbands. We examine roughly 1400 sq. deg. of the IPHAS survey area and draw up a catalogue containing 103058 objects with significant proper motions below 150 millarcseconds per year in the magnitude range 13.5$< r <$19. Our survey sample contains large samples of white dwarfs and subdwarfs which can be identified using a reduced proper motion diagram. We also found several objects with IPHAS colours suggesting H${alpha}$ emission and significant proper motions. One is the known cataclysmic variable GD552; two are known DB white dwarfs and five others are found to be non-DA (DB and DC) white dwarfs, which were included in the H$alpha$ emission line catalogue due to their lack of absorption in the H$alpha$ narrow-band.

We report H$alpha$ filter photometry for 197 northern hemisphere planetary nebulae (PNe) obtained using imaging data from the IPHAS survey. H$alpha$+[N II] fluxes were measured for 46 confirmed or possible PNe discovered by the IPHAS survey and for 151 previously catalogued PNe that fell within the area of the northern Galactic Plane surveyed by IPHAS. After correcting for [N II] emission admitted by the IPHAS H$alpha$ filter, the resulting H$alpha$ fluxes were combined with published radio free-free fluxes and H$beta$ fluxes, in order to estimate mean optical extinctions to 143 PNe using ratios involving their integrated Balmer line fluxes and their extinction-free radio fluxes. Distances to the PNe were then estimated using three different 3D interstellar dust extinction mapping methods, including the IPHAS-based H-MEAD algorithm of Sale (2014). These methods were used to plot dust extinction versus distance relationships for the lines of sight to the PNe; the intercepts with the derived dust optical extinctions allowed distances to the PNe to be inferred. For 17 of the PNe in our sample reliable Gaia DR2 distances were available and these have been compared with the distances derived using three different extinction mapping algorithms as well as with distances from the nebular radius vs. H$alpha$ surface brightness relation of Frew et al. (2016). That relation and the H-MEAD extinction mapping algorithm yielded the closest agreement with the Gaia DR2 distances.

The UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey (GPS) began in 2005 as a 7 year effort to survey ~1800 square degrees of the northern Galactic plane in the J, H, and K passbands. The survey included a second epoch of K band data, with a baseline of 2 to 8 years, for the purpose of investigating variability and measuring proper motions. We have calculated proper motions for 167 Million sources in a 900 square degree area located at l > 60 degrees in order to search for new high proper motion objects. Visual inspection has verified 617 high proper motion sources (> 200 mas/yr) down to K=17, of which 153 are new discoveries. Among these we have a new spectroscopically confirmed T5 dwarf, an additional T dwarf with estimated type T6, 13 new L dwarf candidates, and two new common proper motion systems containing ultracool dwarf candidates. We provide improved proper motions for an additional 12 high proper motion stars that were independently discovered in the WISE dataset during the course of this investigation.
[abridged] The severe crowding in the direction of the inner Milky Way suggests that the census of stars within a few tens of parsecs in that direction may not be complete. We search for new nearby objects companions of known high proper motion (HPM) stars located towards the densest regions of the Southern Milky Way where the background contamination presented a major problem to previous works. The common proper motion (PM) method was used--we inspected the area around 167 known HPM (>=200 mas/yr) stars: 67 in the disk and 100 in the bulge. Multi-epoch images were provided by 2MASS and the VISTA Variables in Via Lactea (VVV). The VVV is a new on-going ZYJHKs plus multi-epoch Ks survey of ~562 deg^2 of Milky Ways bulge and inner Southern disk. Seven new co-moving companions were discovered around known HPM stars; six known co-moving pairs were recovered; a pair of stars that was thought to be co-moving was found to have different proper motions; published HPMs of eight stars were not confirmed; last but not least, spectral types ranging from G8V to M5V were derived from new infrared spectroscopy for seventeen stars, members of the co-moving pairs. The seven newly discovered stars constitute ~4% of the nearby HPM star list but this is not a firm limit on the HPM star incompleteness because our starting point--the HPM list assembled from the literature--is incomplete itself, missing many nearby HPM M and L type objects, and it is contaminated with non-HPM stars. We have demonstrated, that the superior sub-arcsec spatial resolution, with respect to previous surveys, allows the VVV to examine further the binary nature nature of known HPM stars. The >=5 yr span of VVV will provide sufficient baseline for finding new HPM stars from VVV data alone.
The Multipurpose InfraRed Imaging System (MIRIS) performed the MIRIS Pa{alpha} Galactic Plane Survey (MIPAPS), which covers the entire Galactic plane within the latitude range of -3{deg} < b < +3{deg} at Pa{alpha} (1.87 um). We present the first result of the MIPAPS data extracted from the longitude range of l = 96.5{deg}-116.3{deg}, and demonstrate the data quality and scientific potential of the data by comparing them with H{alpha} maps obtained from the INT Photometric H{alpha} Survey (IPHAS) data. We newly identify 90 H II region candidates in the WISE H II region catalog as definite H II regions by detecting the Pa{alpha} and/or H{alpha} recombination lines, out of which 53 H II regions are detected at Pa{alpha}. We also report the detection of additional 29 extended and 18 point-like sources at Pa{alpha}. We estimate the E(B-V) color excesses and the total Lyman continuum luminosities for H II regions by combining the MIPAPS Pa{alpha} and IPHAS H{alpha} fluxes. The E(B-V) values are found to be systematically lower than those estimated from point stars associated with H II regions. Utilizing the MIPAPS Pa{alpha} and IPHAS H{alpha} images, we obtain an E(B-V) map for the entire region of the H II region Sh2-131 with an angular size of ~2.5{deg}. The E(B-V) map shows not only numerous high-extinction filamentary features but also negative E(B-V) regions, indicating H{alpha} excess. The H{alpha} excess and the systematic underestimation of E(B-V) are attributed to light scattered by dust.
Deep near-IR images from the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) Survey were used to search for RR Lyrae stars in the Southern Galactic plane. A sizable sample of 404 RR Lyrae of type ab stars was identified across a thin slice of the 4$^{rm th}$ Galactic quadrant ($295deg < l < 350deg$, $-2.24deg < b < -1.05deg$). The samples distance distribution exhibits a maximum density that occurs at the bulge tangent point, which implies that this primarily Oosterhoff type I population of RRab stars does not trace the bar delineated by their red clump counterparts. The bulge RR Lyrae population does not extend beyond $l sim340 deg$, and the samples spatial distribution presents evidence of density enhancements and substructure that warrants further investigation. Indeed, the sample may be employed to evaluate Galactic evolution models, and is particularly lucrative since half of the discovered RR Lyrae are within reach of Gaia astrometric observations.
