Aiming at high precision beam position measurement of micron or sub-micron for Shanghai Soft X-ray free electron laser (SXFEL) facility which is being built in site of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics has developed a high Q cavity beam position monitor (CBPM) that the resonant frequency is 4.7 GHz and relevant BPM electronics include dedicated RF front-end and home-made digital BPM (DBPM) also has been done. The cavity design, cold test, system architecture and the beam test with three adjacent pickups has been performed in Shanghai Deep ultraviolet free electron laser(SDUV-FEL) facility are included. The beam experiment results show that the physical design of our CBPM is consistent with the expectations basically and the beam position resolution can fulfill the resolution requirements for the SXFEL project if we optimize the beam conditions.
Initial test results of an L-band multi-beam klystron with parameters relevant for ILC are presented. The chief distinction of this tube from MBKs already developed for ILC is its low operating voltage of 60 kV, a virtue that implies considerable technological simplifications in the accelerator complex. To demonstrate the concept underlying the tubes design, a six-beamlet quadrant (a 54 inch high one-quarter portion of the full 1.3 GHz tube) was built and recently underwent initial tests, with main goals of demonstrating rated gun perveance, rated gain, and at least one-quarter of the full 10-MW rated power. Our initial three-day conditioning campaign without RF drive (140 microsec pulses @ 60 Hz) was stopped at 53% of full rated duty because of time-limits at the test-site; no signs appeared that would seem to prevent achieving full duty operation (i.e., 1.6 msec pulses @ 10 Hz). The subsequent tests with 10-15 microsec RF pulses confirmed the rated gain, produced output powers of up to 2.86 MW at 60 kV with high efficiency and 56 dB gain, and showed acceptable beam interception. These results suggest that a full version of the tube should be able to produce up to 11.5 MW. Follow-on tests are planned for later in 2015.
The design luminosity for the future linear colliders is very demanding and challenging. Beam-based feedback systems will be required to achieve the necessary beam-beam stability and steer the two beams into collision. In particular we have studied the luminosity performance improvement by intra-train beam-based feedback systems for position and angle corrections at the interaction point. We have set up a simulation model which introduces different machine imperfections and can be applied to both the International Linear Collider (ILC) and the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC).
This paper presents history and evolution of the intra-bunch feedback system for circular accelerators. This pro-ject has been presented by John D. Fox (SLAC/Stanford Un.) at the IPAC2010 held in Kyoto. The idea of the pro-posal is to build a flexible and powerful instrument to mit-igate the parasitic e-cloud effects on the proton (and poten-tially positron) beams in storage rings. Being a new and ambitious project, the financial issues have been quite im-portant. US LHC Accelerator Research Program (LARP) and other institution funding sources have assured the de-velopment of the design for implementing the feedback in the SPS ring at CERN. Here the intra-bunch feedback sys-tem has been installed and tested in the frame of the LIU (LHC Injector Upgrade) program. After the end of the LARP funding, a possible new inter-esting chance to continue the R&D activity, could be by implementing the system in a lepton storage ring affected by e-cloud effects. For achieving this goal, a possible ex-periment could be carried out in the positron ring of DAFNE at Frascati, Italy. The feasibility of the proposal is evaluated in the following sections. In case of approval of the experiment, indeed the project could be inserted in the DAFNE-TF (DAFNE Test Facility) program that is fore-seen after the 2020 for the following 3-5 years.
A high-resolution, intratrain position feedback system has been developed to achieve and maintain collisions at the proposed future electron-positron International Linear Collider (ILC). A prototype has been commissioned and tested with a beam in the extraction line of the Accelerator Test Facility at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization in Japan. It consists of a stripline beam position monitor (BPM) with analogue signal-processing electronics, a custom digital board to perform the feedback calculation, and a stripline kicker driven by a high-current amplifier. The closed-loop feedback latency is 148 ns. For a three-bunch train with 154 ns bunch spacing, the feedback system has been used to stabilize the third bunch to 450 nm. The kicker response is linear, and the feedback performance is maintained, over a correction range of over $pm$60 {mu}m. The propagation of the correction has been confirmed by using an independent stripline BPM located downstream of the feedback system. The system has been demonstrated to meet the BPM resolution, beam kick, and latency requirements for the ILC.
