We argue that Raman study of Fe-pnictides is a way to unambiguously distinguish between various superconducting gaps proposed for these materials. We show that $A_{1g}$ Raman intensity has a true resonance peak below $2Delta$ for extended s-wave superconducting gap, $Delta(mathbf{k}) = Delta (cos k_x + cos k_y)/2$ in the folded Brillouin zone. No such peak emerges for a pure s-wave gap, a d-wave gap, and another extended s-wave gap with $Delta(mathbf{k}) = Delta cos{frac{k_x}{2}} cos{frac{k_y}{2}}$ proposed by several groups.

The nature of the pairing state in iron-based superconductors is the subject of much debate. Here we argue that in one material, the stoichiometric iron pnictide KFe2As2, there is overwhelming evidence for a d-wave pairing state, characterized by symmetry-imposed vertical line nodes in the superconducting gap. This evidence is reviewed, with a focus on thermal conductivity and the strong impact of impurity scattering on the critical temperature Tc. We then compare KFe2As2 to Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2, obtained by Ba substitution, where the pairing symmetry is s-wave and the Tc is ten times higher. The transition from d-wave to s-wave within the same crystal structure provides a rare opportunity to investigate the connection between band structure and pairing mechanism. We also compare KFe2As2 to the nodal iron-based superconductor LaFePO, for which the pairing symmetry is probably not d-wave, but more likely s-wave with accidental line nodes.

Neutron crystal-field spectroscopy experiments in the Y- and La-type high-temperature superconductors HoBa2Cu3O6.56, HoBa2Cu4O8, and La1.81Sr0.15Ho0.04CuO4 are reviewed. By this bulk-sensitive technique, information on the gap function is obtained from the relaxation behavior of crystal-field transitions associated with the Ho3+ ions which sit as local probes close to the superconducting copper-oxide planes. The relaxation data exhibit a peculiar change from a convex to a concave shape between the superconducting transition temperature Tc and the pseudogap temperature T* which can only be modelled satisfactorily if the gap function of predominantly d-wave symmetry includes an s-wave component of the order of 20-25%, independent of the doping level. Moreover, our results are compatible with an unusual temperature dependence of the gap function in the pseudogap region (Tc<T<T*), i.e., a breakup of the Fermi surface into disconnected arcs.
We report a Fe Kbeta x-ray emission spectroscopy study of local magnetic moments in the rare-earth doped iron pnictide Ca_{1-x}RE_xFe_2As_2 (RE=La, Pr, and Nd). In all samples studied the size of the Fe local moment is found to decrease significantly with temperature and goes from ~0.9 mu_B at T = 300 K to ~0.45 mu_B at T = 70 K. In the collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase of Nd- and Pr-doped samples (T<70K) the local moment is quenched, while the moment remains unchanged for the La-doped sample, which does not show lattice collapse. Our results show that Ca_{1-x}RE_xFe_2As_2 (RE= Pr and Nd) exhibits a spin-state transition and provide direct evidence for a non-magnetic Fe^{2+} ion in the cT-phase, as predicted by Yildirim. We argue that the gradual change of the the spin-state over a wide temperature range reveals the importance of multiorbital physics, in particular the competition between the crystal field split Fe 3d orbitals and the Hunds rule coupling.

A high quality superconducting Li$_{0.68}$NbO$_2$ polycrystalline sample was synthesized by deintercalation of Li ions from Li$_{0.93}$NbO$_2$. The field dependent resistivity and specific heat were measured down to 0.5 K. The upper critical field $H_{c2} (T)$ is deduced from the resistivity data and $H_{c2}(0)$ is estimated to be $sim 2.98$ T. A notable specific heat jump is observed at the superconducting transition temperature $T_c sim 5.0$ K at zero field. Below $T_c$, the electronic specific heat shows a thermal activated behavior and agrees well with the theoretical result of the BCS s-wave superconductors. It indicates that the superconducting pairing in Li$_{0.68}$NbO$_2$ has s-wave symmetry.
FeSe is an iron-based superconductor of immense current interest due to the large enhancements of Tc that occur when it is pressurized or grown as a single layer on an insulating substrate. Here we report precision measurements of its superconducting electrodynamics, at frequencies of 202 and 658 MHz and at temperatures down to 0.1 K. The quasiparticle conductivity reveals a rapid collapse in scattering on entering the superconducting state that is strongly reminiscent of unconventional superconductors such as cuprates, organics and the heavy fermion material CeCoIn5. At the lowest temperatures the quasiparticle mean free path exceeds 50 micron, a record for a compound superconductor. From the superfluid response we confirm the importance of multiband superconductivity and reveal strong evidence for a finite energy-gap minimum.
