Quasi-achromat lattices (small dispersion is allowed in their straight sections, between their cells) are considered; in a cell, there are bending magnets of two kinds, of unequal magnetic field. Minimization of the effective emittance is carried out by the following algorithm (which follows Teng, and partly Lee). (1) Every inner dipoles contribution to the natural emittance is minimized with respect to all optics parameters (relating to dispersion and beta-function), except for the shift parameter, s_0, which specifies the interval between the beta-function minimum and the center of a magnet; for a side bending magnet, its contribution to an integral relating to the effective emittance (the relation uses the fact that the arithmetic mean majorizes the geometric mean) is minimized. (2) The other parameters of dipoles (fields, lengths or angles ratios, shifts) are restricted with the boundary conditions: the equality of Courant-Snyder invariants on the exit from a magnet and on the entrance to the following one. (3) The minimum of effective emittance and the last free parameters (two or three) can be found by computation. The accuracy of this method falls with decreasing of the number of internal dipoles in a cell, and still the isomagnetic Tanaka-Ando minimum (for the modified DBA*-lattice which has no inner dipoles) is reproduced with accuracy better than half a percent. If the number of dipoles per cell does not exceed four, the smallest effective emittance (14% lower than TA-limit) is achieved for QBA**-lattice where all dipoles have nonzero shifts.

The wire scanners are used for a measurement of the very small beam size and the emittance in Accelerator Test Facility (ATF). They are installed in the extraction beam line of ATF damping ring. The extracted beam emittance are ex=1.3x10-9 m.rad, ey=1.7x10-11 m.rad with 2x109 electrons/bunch intensity and 1.3GeV energy. The wire scanners scan the beam by a tungsten wire with beam repetition 0.78Hz. The scanning speed is, however, very slow(~500um/sec). Since the extracted beam is quite stable by using the double kicker system, precision of the size measurement is less than 2um for 50 - 150um horizontal beam size and 0.3um for 8 - 16um vertical beam size. The detail of the system and the performance are described.
We investigate beam loading and emittance preservation for a high-charge electron beam being accelerated in quasi-linear plasma wakefields driven by a short proton beam. The structure of the studied wakefields are similar to those of a long, modulated proton beam, such as the AWAKE proton driver. We show that by properly choosing the electron beam parameters and exploiting two well known effects, beam loading of the wakefield and full blow out of plasma electrons by the accelerated beam, the electron beam can gain large amounts of energy with a narrow final energy spread (%-level) and without significant emittance growth.
We propose a novel scheme for final muon ionization cooling with quadrupole doublets followed by emittance exchange in vacuum to achieve the small beam sizes needed by a muon collider. A flat muon beam with a series of quadrupole doublet half cells appears to provide the strong focusing required for final cooling. Each quadrupole doublet has a low beta region occupied by a dense, low Z absorber. After final cooling, normalized transverse, longitudinal, and angular momentum emittances of 0.100, 2.5, and 0.200 mm-rad are exchanged into 0.025, 70, and 0.0 mm-rad. A skew quadrupole triplet transforms a round muon bunch with modest angular momentum into a flat bunch with no angular momentum. Thin electrostatic septa efficiently slice the flat bunch into 17 parts. The 17 bunches are interleaved into a 3.7 meter long train with RF deflector cavities. Snap bunch coalescence combines the muon bunch train longitudinally in a 21 GeV ring in 55 microseconds, one quarter of a synchrotron oscillation period. A linear long wavelength RF bucket gives each bunch a different energy causing the bunches to drift in the ring until they merge into one bunch and can be captured in a short wavelength RF bucket with a 13% muon decay loss and a packing fraction as high as 87%.
The existence of a characteristic coherence length in FEL SASE Physics determines the independent lasing of different portions, namely the slices, of the electron bunch. Each slice may be characterized by different phase space properties (not necessarily equal emittances and Twiss coefficients). This fact opens new questions on the concept of beam matching and how the various portions of the beam contribute to the performances of the output radiation, including those associated with the transverse coherence.
Full exploitation of emittance exchange (EEX) requires aberration-free performance of a complex imaging system including active radio-frequency (RF) elements which can add temporal distortions. We investigate the performance of an EEX line where the exchange occurs between two dimensions with normalized emittances which differ by multiple orders of magnitude. The transverse emittance is exchanged into the longitudinal dimension using a double dog-leg emittance exchange setup with a five cell RF deflector cavity. Aberration correction is performed on the four most dominant aberrations. These include temporal aberrations that are corrected with higher order magnetic optical elements located where longitudinal and transverse emittance are coupled. We demonstrate aberration-free performance of an EEX line with emittances differing by four orders of magnitude, textit{i.e.} an initial transverse emittance of 1~pm-rad is exchanged with a longitudinal emittance of 10~nm-rad.
