We present an analysis of the chemical abundances of the star Tycho G in the direction of the remnant of supernova (SN) 1572, based on Keck high-resolution optical spectra. The stellar parameters of this star are found to be those of a G-type subgiant with $T_{mathrm{eff}} = 5900 pm 100$ K, loggl $ = 3.85 pm 0.30$ dex, and $mathrm{[Fe/H]} = -0.05 pm 0.09$. This determination agrees with the stellar parameters derived for the star in a previous survey for the possible companion star of SN 1572 (Ruiz-Lapuente et al. 2004). The chemical abundances follow the Galactic trends, except for Ni, which is overabundant relative to Fe, $[{rm Ni/Fe}] $ $=$ 0.16 $pm$ 0.04. Co is slightly overabundant (at a low significance level). These enhancements in Fe-peak elements could have originated from pollution by the supernova ejecta. We find a surprisingly high Li abundance for a star that has evolved away from the main sequence. We discuss these findings in the context of companion stars of supernovae.

With archival and new Hubble Space Telescope observations we have refined the space-velocity measurements of the stars in the central region of the remnant of Tychos supernova (SN) 1572, one of the historical Galactic Type Ia supernova remnants (SNRs). We derived a proper motion for Tycho-G of (mu_RA_cos_dec;mu_dec)=(-2.63;-3.98)+/-(0.06;0.04)[formal errors]+/-(0.18;0.10)[expected errors] mas/yr. We also reconstruct the binary orbit that Tycho-G should have followed if it were the surviving companion of SN 1572. We redetermine the Ni abundance of this star and compare it with new abundance data from stars of the Galactic disk, finding that [Ni/Fe] is about 1.7 sigma above the Galactic trend. From the high velocity (v_b = -50+/-14 km/s) of Tycho-G perpendicular to the Galactic plane, its metallicity, and its Ni excess, we find the probability of its being a chance interloper to be P < 0.00037 at most. The projected rotational velocity of the star should be below current observational limits. The projected position of Tycho-G is, within the uncertainties, consistent with the centroid of the X-ray emission of Tychos SNR; moreover, its brightness is generally consistent with the post-explosion evolution of the luminosity of a SN companion. Among the other 23 stars having V<22 mag and located within 42 arcsec from the X-ray centroid, only 4 are at distances compatible with that of the SNR, and none of them shows any peculiarity. Therefore, if even Tycho-G is not the surviving companion of SN 1572, the absence of other viable candidates does favor the merging of two white dwarfs as the producer of the SN.

We present the observation of the Tycho supernova remnant obtained with the EPIC and RGS instruments onboard the XMM-Newton satellite. We compare images and azimuthally averaged radial profiles in emission lines from different elements (silicon and iron) and different transition lines of iron (Fe L and Fe K). While the Fe XVII L line and Si XIII K line images are globally spatially coincident, the Fe K emission clearly peaks at a smaller radius, indicating a higher temperature toward the reverse shock. This is qualitatively the profile expected when the reverse shock, after travelling through the outer power-law density profile, has entered the central plateau of the ejecta. The high energy continuum map has an overall smooth distribution, with a similar extent to the radio emission. Its radial profile peaks further out than the lines emission. Brighter and harder continuum regions are observed with a rough bipolar symmetry in the eastern and western edges. The spectral analysis of the southeastern knots supports spatial variations of the relative abundance of silicon and iron, which implies an incomplete mixing of the silicon and iron layers.
The structure, elemental abundances, physical conditions of the LMC supernova remnant (SNR) 0540-69.3 and its surroundings were investigated using [O III] imaging and spectroscopy. Several new spectral lines are identified, both in central filaments and in interstellar clouds shocked by the supernova blast wave. The central lines are redshifted by $440pm80$ km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the LMC, and the [O III] emission displays a symmetry axis of ring-like structures which could indicate that the pulsar shares the same general redshift as the central supernova ejecta. [O II], [S II], [Ar III] and H$beta$ have more compact structures than [O III], and possibly [Ne III]. The average [O III] temperature is $23,500 pm 1,800$ K, and the electron density from [S II] is typically $10^3$ cm$^{-3}$. By mass, the relative elemental abundances of the central shocked ejecta are ${rm O:Ne:S:Ar} approx 1:0.07:0.10:0.02$, consistent with explosion models of $13-20$ solar mass progenitors, and similar to that of SN 1987A, as is also the mixing of hydrogen and helium into the center. [O III] is also seen in freely coasting ejecta outside the pulsar-wind nebula out to well above $2,000$ km s$^{-1}$. From this a pulsar age of $approx 1,200$ years is estimated. Four filaments of shocked interstellar medium with a wide range in degree of ionization of iron are identified. One was observed in X-rays, and another has a redshift of $85pm30$ km~s$^{-1}$ relative to LMC. From this the electron density of the [O III]-emitting gas is estimated to be $10^3$ cm$^{-3}$. The line of the most highly ionized ion, [Fe XIV] $lambda$5303, likely comes from an evaporation zone in connection with the radiatively cooled gas emitting, e.g., [O III].
The Mn to Cr mass ratio in supernova ejecta has recently been proposed as a tracer of Type Ia SN progenitor metallicity. We review the advantages and problems of this observable quantity, and discuss them in the framework of two Galactic supernova remnants: the well known Tycho SNR and W49B, an older object that has been tentatively classified as Type Ia. The fluxes of the Mn and Cr Ka lines in the X-ray spectra of these SNRs observed by the Suzaku and ASCA satellites suggest progenitors of supersolar metallicity for both objects.

A compact complex of line emission filaments in the galactic plane has the appearance of those expected of an evolved supernova remnant though non-thermal radio and X-ray emission have not yet been detected. This optical emission line region has now been observed with deep imagery and both low and high-dispersion spectroscopy. Diagnostic diagrams of the line intensities from the present spectra and the new kinematical observations both point to a supernova origin. However, several features of the nebular complex still require an explanation within this interpretation.
