We present the first study to examine the validity of the relativistic impulse approximation (RIA) for describing elastic proton-nucleus scattering at incident laboratory kinetic energies lower than 200 MeV. For simplicity we choose a $^{208}$Pb target, which is a spin-saturated spherical nucleus for which reliable nuclear structure models exist. Microscopic scalar and vector optical potentials are generated by folding invariant scalar and vector scattering nucleon-nucleon (NN) amplitudes, based on our recently developed relativistic meson-exchange model, with Lorentz scalar and vector densities resulting from the accurately calibrated PK1 relativistic mean field model of nuclear structure. It is seen that phenomenological Pauli blocking (PB) effects and density-dependent corrections to $sigma$N and $omega$N meson-nucleon coupling constants modify the RIA microscopic scalar and vector optical potentials so as to provide a consistent and quantitative description of all elastic scattering observables, namely total reaction cross sections, differential cross sections, analyzing powers and spin rotation functions. In particular, the effect of PB becomes more significant at energies lower than 200 MeV, whereas phenomenological density-dependent corrections to the NN interaction {it also} play an increasingly important role at energies lower than 100 MeV.

We apply the cluster-folding (CF) model for $vec{p}+^{6}$He scattering at 200 MeV, where the potential between $vec{p}$ and $^{4}$He is fitted to data on $vec{p}+^{4}$He scattering at 200 MeV. For $vec{p}+^{6}$He scattering at 200 MeV, the CF model reproduces measured differential cross section with no free parameter, We then predict the analyzing power $A_y(q)$ with the CF model, where $q$ is the transfer momentum. Johnson, Al-Khalili and Tostevin construct a theory for one-neutron halo scattering, taking (1) the adiabatic approximation and (2) neglecting the interaction between a valence neutron and a target, and yield a simple relationship between the elastic scattering of a halo nucleus and of its core under certain conditions. We improve their theory with (3) the eikonal approximation in order to determine $A_y(q)$ for $^{6}$He from the data on $A_y(q)$ for $^{4}$He. The improved theory is accurate, when approximation (1)--(3) are good. Among the three approximations, approximation (2) is most essential. The CF model shows that approximation (2) is good in $0.9 < q < 2.4$ fm$^{-1}$. In the improved theory, the $A_y(q)$ for $^{6}$He is the same as that for $^{4}$He. In $0.9 < q < 2.4$ fm$^{-1}$, we then predict $A_y(q)$ for $vec{p}+^{6}$He scattering at 200 MeV from measured $A_y(q)$ for $vec{p}+^{4}$He scattering at 200 MeV. We thus predict $A_y(q)$ with the model-dependent and the model-independent prescription. The ratio of differential cross sections measured for $^{6}$He to that for $^{4}$He is related to the wave function of $^{6}$He. We then determine the radius between $^{4}$He and the center-of-mass of valence two neutrons in $^{6}$He. The radius is 5.77 fm.
Observables in elastic proton-deuteron scattering are sensitive probes of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and three-nucleon force effects. The present experimental data base for this reaction is large, but contains a large discrepancy between data sets for the differential cross section taken at 135 MeV/nucleon by two experimental research groups. This paper reviews the background of this problem and presents new data taken at KVI. Differential cross sections and analyzing powers for the $^{2}{rm H}(vec p,d){p}$ and ${rm H}(vec d,d){p}$ reactions at 135 MeV/nucleon and 65 MeV/nucleon, respectively, have been measured. The data differ significantly from previous measurements and consistently follow the energy dependence as expected from an interpolation of published data taken over a large range at intermediate energies.
We present measurements of differential cross sections and the analyzing powers A_y, iT11, T20, T21, and T22 at E_c.m.=431.3 keV. In addition, an excitation function of iT11(theta_c.m.=87.8 degrees) for 431.3 <= E_c.m. <= 2000 keV is presented. These data are compared to calculations employing realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, both with and without three-nucleon forces. Excellent agreement with the tensor analyzing powers and cross section is found, while the Ay and iT11 data are found to be underpredicted by the calculations.
The Kohn variational principle and the hyperspherical harmonic technique are applied to study p-3He elastic scattering at low energies. Preliminary results obtained using several interaction models are reported. The calculations are compared to a recent phase shift analysis performed at the Triangle University Nuclear Laboratory and to the available experimental data. Using a three-nucleon interaction derived from chiral perturbation theory at N2LO, we have found a noticeable reduction of the discrepancy observed for the A_y observable.

We present a precise measurement of the cross section, proton and $rm ^3He$ analyzing powers, and spin correlation coefficient $C_{y,y}$ for $p$-$rm ^3He$ elastic scattering near 65 MeV, and a comparison with rigorous four-nucleon scattering calculations based on realistic nuclear potentials and a model with $Delta$-isobar excitation. Clear discrepancies are seen in some of the measured observables in the regime around the cross section minimum. Theoretical predictions using scaling relations between the calculated cross section and the $rm ^3 He$ binding energy are not successful in reproducing the data. Large sensitivity to the $NN$ potentials and rather small $Delta$-isobar effects in the calculated cross section are noticed as different features from those in the deuteron-proton elastic scattering. The results obtained above indicate that $p$-$rm ^3He$ scattering at intermediate energies is an excellent tool to explore nuclear interactions not accessible by three-nucleon scattering.
