In the study of ocean wave impact on structures, one often uses Froude scaling since the dominant force is gravity. However the presence of trapped or entrained air in the water can significantly modify wave impacts. When air is entrained in water in the form of small bubbles, the acoustic properties in the water change dramatically and for example the speed of sound in the mixture is much smaller than in pure water, and even smaller than in pure air. While some work has been done to study small-amplitude disturbances in such mixtures, little work has been done on large disturbances in air-water mixtures. We propose a basic two-fluid model in which both fluids share the same velocities. It is shown that this model can successfully mimic water wave impacts on coastal structures. Even though this is a model without interface, waves can occur. Their dispersion relation is discussed and the formal limit of pure phases (interfacial waves) is considered. The governing equations are discretized by a second-order finite volume method. Numerical results are presented. It is shown that this basic model can be used to study violent aerated flows, especially by providing fast qualitative estimates.

We aim to study a finite volume scheme to solve the two dimensional inviscid primitive equations of the atmosphere with humidity and saturation, in presence of topography and subject to physically plausible boundary conditions to the system of equations. In that respect, a version of a projection method is introduced to enforce the compatibility condition on the horizontal velocity field, which comes from the boundary conditions. The resulting scheme allows for a significant reduction of the errors near the topography when compared to more standard finite volume schemes. In the numerical simulations, we first present the associated good convergence results that are satisfied by the solutions simulated by our scheme when compared to particular analytic solutions. We then report on numerical experiments using realistic parameters. Finally, the effects of a random small-scale forcing on the velocity equation is numerically investigated. The numerical results show that such a forcing is responsible for recurrent large-scale patterns to emerge in the temperature and velocity fields.
Most fluid flow problems that are vital in engineering applications involve at least one of the following features: turbulence, shocks, and/or material interfaces. While seemingly different phenomena, these flows all share continuous generation of high wavenumber modes, which we term the $k_infty$ irregularity. In this work, an inviscid regularization technique called observable regularization is proposed for the simulation of two-phase compressible flows. The proposed approach regularizes the equations at the level of the partial differential equation and as a result, any numerical method can be used to solve the system of equations. The regularization is accomplished by introducing an observability limit that represents the length scale below which one cannot properly model or continue to resolve flow structures. An observable volume fraction equation is derived for capturing the material interface, which satisfies the pressure equilibrium at the interface. The efficacy of the observable regularization method is demonstrated using several test cases, including a one-dimensional material interface tracking, one-dimensional shock-tube and shock-bubble problems, and two-dimensional simulations of a shock interacting with a cylindrical bubble. The results show favorable agreement, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with available exact solutions or numerical and experimental data from the literature. The computational saving by using the current method is estimated to be about one order of magnitude in two-dimensional computations and significantly higher in three-dimensional computations. Lastly, the effect of the observability limit and best practices to choose its value are discussed.
We present a particle method for estimating the curvature of interfaces in volume-of-fluid simulations of multiphase flows. The method is well suited for under-resolved interfaces, and it is shown to be more accurate than the parabolic fitting that is employed in such cases. The curvature is computed from the equilibrium positions of particles constrained to circular arcs and attracted to the interface. The proposed particle method is combined with the method of height functions at higher resolutions, and it is shown to outperform the current combinations of height functions and parabolic fitting. The algorithm is conceptually simple and straightforward to implement on new and existing software frameworks for multiphase flow simulations thus enhancing their capabilities in challenging flow problems. We evaluate the proposed hybrid method on a number of two- and three-dimensional benchmark flow problems and illustrate its capabilities on simulations of flows involving bubble coalescence and turbulent multiphase flows.
We consider a class of Boussinesq systems of Bona-Smith type in two space dimensions approximating surface wave flows modelled by the three-dimensional Euler equations. We show that various initial-boundary-value problems for these systems, posed on a bounded plane domain are well posed locally in time. In the case of reflective boundary conditions, the systems are discretized by a modified Galerkin method which is proved to converge in $L^2$ at an optimal rate. Numerical experiments are presented with the aim of simulating two-dimensional surface waves in complex plane domains with a variety of initial and boundary conditions, and comparing numerical solutions of Bona-Smith systems with analogous solutions of the BBM-BBM system.
