Singularities in macroscopic systems at discontinuous phase transitions are replaced in finite systems by sharp but continuous changes. Both the energy differences between metastable and stable phases and the energy barriers separating these phases decrease with decreasing particle number. Then, for small enough systems, random heterophasic oscillations of the entire system become an observable form of thermal motion. Under certain conditions, these oscillations take the form of oscillatory nucleation. We discuss mechanisms and observation conditions for these random transitions between phases.

We present exact and asymptotic results for clusters in the one-dimensional totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) with two different dynamics. The expected length of the largest cluster is shown to diverge logarithmically with increasing system size for ordinary TASEP dynamics and as a logarithm divided by a double logarithm for generalized dynamics, where the hopping probability of a particle depends on the size of the cluster it belongs to. The connection with the asymptotic theory of extreme order statistics is discussed in detail. We also consider a related model of interface growth, where the deposited particles are allowed to relax to the local gravitational minimum.
Point-contact spectroscopy is applied to study the energy dependence of paramagnetic impurities in noble metals. The samples are in the form of the so-called mechanically controllable break-junctions where the investigated piece of alloy makes a nanowire connecting two bulk electrodes. The lateral dimensions of the bridge are of the order of a few nm and can be continuously changed. Three qualitative dependences manifest the size effect while decreasing the contact diameter: 1) Intensity of Kondo peak due to Kondo scattering in point-contact spectra decreases slower than the nonlinearities due to phonon scatterings, 2) The width of the Kondo peak becomes broder, and 3) Due to the Zeeman energy, the splitting of Kondo peak in external and internal (for a spin glass) fields, is suppressed. Explanation of the phenomena is given in terms of the theory of Zarand and Udvardi where the local density of states (LDOS) of conduction electron fluctuates strongly inside a nanowire due to interference of electronic states. Since Kondo effect is a local probe of LDOS, the impurities located close to the maxima of LDOS show the increase of the Kondo temperature and give the primary contribution to the contact resistance.

Universal scaling laws form one of the central issues in physics. A non-standard scaling law or a breakdown of a standard scaling law, on the other hand, can often lead to the finding of a new universality class in physical systems. Recently, we found that a statistical quantity related to fluctuations follows a non-standard scaling law with respect to system size in a synchronized state of globally coupled non-identical phase oscillators [Nishikawa et al., Chaos $boldsymbol{22}$, 013133 (2012)]. However, it is still unclear how widely this non-standard scaling law is observed. In the present paper, we discuss the conditions required for the unusual scaling law in globally coupled oscillator systems, and we validate the conditions by numerical simulations of several different models.
A study of the self-organization of vacancy clusters in irradiated materials is presented. Using a continuum stochastic model we take into account dynamics of point defects and their sinks with elastic interactions of vacancies. Dynamics of vacancy clusters formation is studied analytically and numerically under conditions related to irradiation in both reactors and accelerators. We have shown a difference in patterning dynamics and studied the external noise influence related to fluctuation in a defect production rate. Applying our approach to pure nickel irradiated under different conditions we have shown that vacancy clusters having a linear size 6 nm can arrange in statistical periodic structure with nano-meter range. We have found that linear size of vacancy clusters at accelerator conditions decreases down to 20%, whereas a period of vacancy clusters reduces to 6.5%.
We study the dynamics of periodic arrays of micrometer-sized liquid-gas menisci formed at superhydrophobic surfaces immersed into water. By measuring the intensity of optical diffraction peaks in real time we are able to resolve nanometer scale oscillations of the menisci with sub-microsecond time resolution. Upon driving the system with an ultrasound field at variable frequency we observe a pronounced resonance at a few hundred kHz, depending on the exact geometry. Modeling the system using the unsteady Stokes equation, we find that this low resonance frequency is caused by a collective mode of the acoustically coupled oscillating menisci.
