We propose a new way to hide extra dimensions without invoking branes, based on Lorentz-violating tensor fields with expectation values along the extra directions. We investigate the case of a single vector ``aether field on a compact circle. In such a background, interactions of other fields with the aether can lead to modified dispersion relations, increasing the mass of the Kaluza-Klein excitations. The mass scale characterizing each Kaluza-Klein tower can be chosen independently for each species of scalar, fermion, or gauge boson. No small-scale deviations from the inverse square law for gravity are predicted, although light graviton modes may exist.

We address the issue of radiative corrections to Kaluza-Klein (KK) masses in five-dimensional QED supplemented by aether Lorentz-violating terms. Specifically, we compute the corrections to the KK photon masses from one fermion loop. In general, the KK masses receive radiative corrections due to breaking the five-dimensional Lorentz invariance by compactification. As we show, the presence of the additional Lorentz violating factor - an aether background, leads to the non-trivial modification of these corrections. This model may be of interest in addressing important phenomenological issues such as the relation between radiative corrected KK mass splitting of a particular mode and uncertainties in the measurements and/or possible spatial variation of the fine-structure constant. For the recent data on the fine-structure constant, we find a KK mass splitting of magnitude $sim 0.01$ MeV for the first excited Kaluza-Klein gauge boson at TeV scale. On the other hand, the large KK modes limit displays a very interesting phenomenon, showing the very special role of the aether in protecting the higher modes from the quantum corrections.
Theories of low-energy Lorentz violation by a fixed-norm aether vector field with two-derivative kinetic terms have a globally bounded Hamiltonian and are perturbatively stable only if the vector is timelike and the kinetic term in the action takes the form of a sigma model. Here we investigate the phenomenological properties of this theory. We first consider the propagation of modes in the presence of gravity, and show that there is a unique choice of curvature coupling that leads to a theory without superluminal modes. Experimental constraints on this theory come from a number of sources, and we examine bounds in a two-dimensional parameter space. We then consider the cosmological evolution of the aether, arguing that the vector will naturally evolve to be orthogonal to constant-density hypersurfaces in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology. Finally, we examine cosmological evolution in the presence of an extra compact dimension of space, concluding that a vector can maintain a constant projection along the extra dimension in an expanding universe only when the expansion is exponential.
We analyze the single subleading soft graviton theorem in $(d+1)$ dimensions under compactification on $S^1$. This produces the single soft theorems for the graviton, vector and scalar fields in $d$ dimension. For the compactification of $11$-dimensional supergravity theory, this gives the soft factorization properties of the single graviton, dilaton and RR 1-form fields in type IIA string theory in ten dimensions. For the case of the soft vector field, we also explicitly check the result obtained from compactification by computing the amplitudes with external massive spin two and massless finite energy states interacting with soft vector field. The former are the Kaluza-Klein excitations of the $d+1$ dimensional metric. Describing the interaction of the KK-modes with the vector field at each level by the minimally coupled Fierz-Pauli Lagrangian, we find agreement with the results obtained from the compactification if the gyromagnetic ratio in the minimally coupled Fierz-Pauli Lagrangian is taken to be $g=1$.
We consider compactifications induced by the gravitino field of eleven dimensional supergravity. Such compactifications are not trivial in the sense that the gravitino profiles are not related to pure bosonic ones by means of a supersymmetry transformation. The basic property of such backgrounds is that they admit $psi$-torsion although they have vanishing Riemann tensor. Thus, these backgrounds may be considered also as solutions of the teleparallel formulation of supergravity. We construct two classes of solutions, one with both antisymmetric three-form field, gravity and gravitino and one with only gravity and gravitino. In these classes of solutions, the internal space is a parallelized compact manifold, so that it does not inherit any cosmological constant to the external spacetime. The latter turns out to be flat Minkowski in the maximally symmetric case. The elimination of the cosmological constant in the spontaneously compactified supergravity seems to be a generic property based on the trading of the cosmological constant for parallelizing torsion.
We study the entanglement wedge cross-section (EWCS) in holographic Aether gravity theory, a gravity theory with Lorentz symmetry breaking meanwhile keeping the general covariance intact. We find that only a limited parameter space is allowed to obtain a black brane with positive Hawking temperature. Subject to these allowed parameter regions, we find that the EWCS could exhibit non-monotonic behaviors with system parameters. Meanwhile, the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE), and the corresponding mutual information (MI), can only exhibit monotonic behaviors. These phenomena suggest that the EWCS could capture much more rich content of the entanglement than that of the HEE and the MI. The role of the Lorentz violation in determining the behaviors of quantum information-related quantities is also analyzed.
