Considering the coherent nonlinear dynamics in double square well potential we find the example of coexistence of Josephson oscillations with a self-trapping regime. This macroscopic bistability is explained by proving analytically the simultaneous existence of symmetric, antisymmetric and asymmetric stationary solutions of the associated Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The effect is illustrated and confirmed by numerical simulations. This property allows to make suggestions on possible experiments using Bose-Einstein condensates in engineered optical lattices or weakly coupled optical waveguide arrays.

In this work we analyze PT-symmetric double-well potentials based on a two-mode picture. We reduce the problem into a PT-symmetric dimer and illustrate that the latter has effectively two fundamental bifurcations, a pitchfork (symmetry-breaking bifurcation) and a saddle-center one, which is the nonlinear analog of the PT-phase-transition. It is shown that the symmetry breaking leads to ghost states (amounting to growth or decay); although these states are not true solutions of the original continuum problem, the systems dynamics closely follows them, at least in its metastable evolution. Past the second bifurcation, there are no longer states of the original continuum system. Nevertheless, the solutions can be analytically continued to yield a new pair of branches, which is also identified and dynamically examined. Our explicit analytical results for the dimer are directly compared to the full continuum problem, yielding a good agreement.
We study - experimentally, theoretically, and numerically - nonlinear excitations in lattices of magnets with long-range interactions. We examine breather solutions, which are spatially localized and periodic in time, in a chain with algebraically-decaying interactions. It was established two decades ago [S. Flach, Phys. Rev. E 58, R4116 (1998)] that lattices with long-range interactions can have breather solutions in which the spatial decay of the tails has a crossover from exponential to algebraic decay. In this Letter, we revisit this problem in the setting of a chain of repelling magnets with a mass defect and verify, both numerically and experimentally, the existence of breathers with such a crossover.
We construct exact localised solutions of the PT-symmetric Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an attractive cubic nonlinearity. The trapping potential has the form of two $delta$-function wells, where one well loses particles while the other one is fed with atoms at an equal rate. The parameters of the constructed solutions are expressible in terms of the roots of a system of two transcendental algebraic equations. We also furnish a simple analytical treatment of the linear Schrodinger equation with the PT-symmetric double-$delta$ potential.
We experimentally study the spin dynamics of mesoscopic ensembles of ultracold magnetic spin-3 atoms located in two separated wells of an optical dipole trap. We use a radio-frequency sweep to selectively flip the spin of the atoms in one of the wells, which produces two separated spin domains of opposite polarization. We observe that these engineered spin domains are metastable with respect to the long-range magnetic dipolar interactions between the two ensembles. The absence of inter-cloud dipolar spin-exchange processes reveals a classical behavior, in contrast to previous results with atoms loaded in an optical lattice. When we merge the two subsystems, we observe spin-exchange dynamics due to contact interactions which enable the first determination of the s-wave scattering length of 52Cr atoms in the S=0 molecular channel a_0=13.5^{+11}_{-10.5}a_B (where a_B is the Bohr radius).
We study the existence and stability of localized states in the two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS)/Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a symmetric four-well potential. Using a fourmode approximation, we are able to trace the parametric evolution of the trapped stationary modes, starting from the corresponding linear limits, and thus derive the complete bifurcation diagram for the families of these stationary modes. The predictions based on the four-mode decomposition are found to be in good agreement with the numerical results obtained from the NLS equation. Actually, the stability properties coincide with those suggested by the corresponding discrete model in the large-amplitude limit. The dynamics of the unstable modes is explored by means of direct simulations. Finally, while we present the full analysis for the case of the focusing nonlinearity, the bifurcation diagram for the defocusing case is briefly considered too.
