Transition frequencies of Fe II ion are known to be very sensitive to variation of the fine structure constant alpha. The resonance absorption lines of Fe II from objects at cosmological distances are used in a search for the possible variation of alpha in cause of cosmic time. In this paper we calculated the dependence of the transition frequencies on alpha^2 (q-factors) for Fe II ion. We found corrections to these coefficients from valence-valence and core-valence correlations and from the Breit interaction. Both the core-valence correlation and Breit corrections to the q-factors appeared to be larger than had been anticipated previously. Nevertheless our calculation confirms that the Fe II absorption lines seen in quasar spectra have large q-factors of both signs and thus the ion Fe II alone can be used in the search for the alpha-variation at different cosmological epochs.

Radio-frequency electric-dipole transitions between nearly degenerate, opposite parity levels of atomic dysprosium (Dy) were monitored over an eight-month period to search for a variation in the fine-structure constant, $alpha$. The data provide a rate of fractional temporal variation of $alpha$ of $(-2.4pm2.3)times10^{-15}$ yr$^{-1}$ or a value of $(-7.8 pm 5.9) times 10^{-6}$ for $k_alpha$, the variation coefficient for $alpha$ in a changing gravitational potential. All results indicate the absence of significant variation at the present level of sensitivity. We also present initial results on laser cooling of an atomic beam of dysprosium.
We study electronic transitions in highly-charged Cf ions that are within the frequency range of optical lasers and have very high sensitivity to potential variations in the fine-structure constant, alpha. The transitions are in the optical despite the large ionisation energies because they lie on the level-crossing of the 5f and 6p valence orbitals in the thallium isoelectronic sequence. Cf16+ is a particularly rich ion, having several narrow lines with properties that minimize certain systematic effects. Cf16+ has very large nuclear charge and large ionisation energy, resulting in the largest alpha-sensitivity seen in atomic systems. The lines include positive and negative shifters.

We propose a new method to probe for variations in the fine structure constant alpha using clusters of galaxies, opening up a window on a new redshift range for such constraints. Hot clusters shine in the X-ray mainly due to bremsstrahlung, while they leave an imprint on the CMB frequency spectrum through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. These two physical processes can be characterized by the integrated Comptonization parameter Y_SZ DA^2 and its X-ray counterpart, the Y_X parameter. The ratio of these two quantities is expected to be constant from numerical simulations and current observations. We show that this fact can be exploited to constrain alpha, as the ratio of the two parameters depends on the fine structure constant as alpha^{3.5}. We determine current constraints from a combination of Planck SZ and XMM-Newton data, testing different models of variation of alpha. When fitting for a constant value of alpha, we find that current constraints are at the 1% level, comparable with current CMB constraints. We discuss strategies for further improving these constraints by almost an order of magnitude.
The electron correlation effects and Breit interaction as well as Quantum Electro-Dynamics (QED) effects were expected to have important contribution to the energy level and transition properties of heavy highly charged ions. The ground states [Ne]$3s^{2}3p^{6}3d^{2}$ and first excited states [Ne]3s$^{2}3p^{5}3d^{3}$ of W$^{54+}$ ion have been studied by using Multi-Configuration Dirac-Fock method with the implementation of Grasp2K package. A restricted active space was employed to investigate the correlation contribution from different models. The Breit interaction and QED effects were taken into account in the relativistic configuration interaction calculation with the converged wavefunction. It is found that the correlation contribution from 3s and 3p orbital have important contribution to the energy level, transition wavelength and probability of the ground and the first excited state of W$^{54+}$ ion.
A means to extract the fine-structure constant $alpha$ from precision spectroscopic data on one-electron ions is presented. We show that in an appropriately weighted difference of the bound-electron $g$ factor and the ground state energy, nuclear structural effects can be effectively suppressed. This method is anticipated to deliver an independent value of $alpha$ via existing or near-future combined Penning trap and x-ray spectroscopic technology, and enables decreasing the uncertainty of $alpha$ by orders of magnitude.
