The properties of a clinical LINAC are investigated for a study of photoactivation cross sections slightly above the neutron threshold. As an example, the photoactivation of a tiny amount of gold by the 197Au(gamma,n)196Au reaction has been measured. The derived photon intensity is at least comparable to conventional and widely used photon sources. In combination with its extremely stable operation, a clinical LINAC ensures that photoactivation studies can be performed for a wide number of targets with very limited beamtime.

Data from the experiment on the 197Au + 197Au reaction at 23 AMeV are analyzed with an aim to find signatures of exotic nuclear configurations such as toroid-shaped objects. The experimental data are compared with predictions of the ETNA code dedicated to look for such configurations and with the QMD model. A novel criterion of selecting events possibly resulting from the formation of exotic freeze-out configurations, the efficiency factor, is tested. Comparison between experimental data and model predictions may indicate for the formation of flat/toroidal nuclear systems.
Mechanism of nuclear reactions on 197Au induced by 11B ions at energies above Coulomb barrier was studied by induced-activity method and gamma-spectroscopy. The cross sections of the reaction fragments from 197Au induced by 11B ions were measured at bombarding energies 137.5 and 255.5 MeV. The fission process was investigated by using multimodal fission approach at the energy 137.5 MeV, and pure symmetric distribution at 255.5 MeV. It was observed that the transferred linear momentum provides the information on the initial projectile-target information. The fissility for both fission reactions under study was deduced from measured fission cross section using the total inelastic cross section. Comparison with proton-induced fission shown, that the linear momentum transferred to the fissile system depends on the probe.
The 197Au(gamma,n) reaction is used as an activation standard for photodisintegration studies on astrophysically relevant nuclei. At the bremsstrahlung facility of the superconducting electron accelerator ELBE (Electron Linear accelerator of high Brilliance and low Emittance) of Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, photoactivation measurements on 197Au have been performed with bremsstrahlung endpoint energies from 8.0 to 15.5 MeV. The measured activation yield is compared with previous experiments as well as with calculations using Hauser-Feshbach statistical models. It is shown that the experimental data are best described by a two-Lorentzian parametrization with taking the axial deformation of 197Au into account. The experimental 197Au(gamma,n) reaction yield measured at ELBE via the photoactivation method is found to be consistent with previous experimental data using photon scattering or neutron detection methods.
The 48Ca({gamma},n) cross section was measured using {gamma}-ray beams of energies between 9.5 and 15.3 MeV generated at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) high-intensity {gamma}-ray source (HI{gamma}S). Prior to this experiment, no direct measurements had been made with {gamma}-ray beams of sufficiently low energy spread to observe structure in this energy range. The cross sections were measured at thirty-four different {gamma}-ray energies with an enriched 48Ca target. Neutron emission is the dominant decay mechanism in the measured energy range that spans from threshold, across the previously identified M1 strength, and up the low-energy edge of the E1 giant dipole resonance (GDR). This work found B(M 1) = 6.8 pm 0.5 {mu}N2 for the 10.23 MeV resonance, a value greater than previously measured. Structures in the cross section commensurate with extended random-phase approximation (ERPA) calculations have also been observed whose magnitudes are in agreement with existing data.
The cross section of the $p(e,epi^+)n$ reaction has been measured for five kinematic settings at an invariant mass of $W = 1094$ MeV and for a four-momentum transfer of $Q^2 = 0.078$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$. The measurement has been performed at MAMI using a new short-orbit spectrometer (SOS) of the A1 collaboration, intended for detection of low-energy pions. The transverse and longitudinal cross section terms were separated using the Rosenbluth method and the transverse-longitudinal interference term has been determined from the left-right asymmetry. The experimental cross section terms are compared with the calculations of three models: DMT2001, MAID2007 and $chi$MAID. The results show that we do not yet understand the dynamics of the fundamental pion.
