This paper presents 52 X-ray bright galaxy clusters selected within the 11 deg$^2$ XMM-LSS survey. 51 of them have spectroscopic redshifts ($0.05<z<1.06$), one is identified at $z_{rm phot}=1.9$, and all together make the high-purity Class 1 (C1) cluster sample of the XMM-LSS, the highest density sample of X-ray selected clusters with a monitored selection function. Their X-ray fluxes, averaged gas temperatures (median $T_X=2$ keV), luminosities (median $L_{X,500}=5times10^{43}$ ergs/s) and total mass estimates (median $5times10^{13} h^{-1} M_{odot}$) are measured, adapting to the specific signal-to-noise regime of XMM-LSS observations. The redshift distribution of clusters shows a deficit of sources when compared to the cosmological expectations, regardless of whether WMAP-9 or Planck-2013 CMB parameters are assumed. This lack of sources is particularly noticeable at $0.4 lesssim z lesssim 0.9$. However, after quantifying uncertainties due to small number statistics and sample variance we are not able to put firm (i.e. $>3 sigma$) constraints on the presence of a large void in the cluster distribution. We work out alternative hypotheses and demonstrate that a negative redshift evolution in the normalization of the $L_{X}-T_X$ relation (with respect to a self-similar evolution) is a plausible explanation for the observed deficit. We confirm this evolutionary trend by directly studying how C1 clusters populate the $L_{X}-T_X-z$ space, properly accounting for selection biases. We point out that a systematically evolving, unresolved, central component in clusters and groups (AGN contamination or cool core) can impact the classification as extended sources and be partly responsible for the observed redshift distribution.[abridged]
We present the final release of the multi-wavelength XMM-LSS data set,covering the full survey area of 11.1 square degrees, with X-ray data processed with the latest XMM-LSS pipeline version. The present publication supersedes the Pierre et al.(2007) catalogue pertaining to the initial 5 square degrees. We provide X-ray source lists in the customary energy bands (0.5-2 and 2-10 keV) for a total of 6721 objects in the deep full-exposure catalogue and 5572 in the 10ks-limited one, above a detection likelihood of 15 in at least one band. We also provide a multiwavelength catalogue, cross-correlating our list with IR, NIR, optical and UV catalogues. Customary data products (X-ray FITS images, CFHTLS and SWIRE thumbnail images) are made available together with our interactively queriable database in Milan, while a static snapshot of the catalogues will be supplied to CDS, as soon as final acceptance is completed.

Context: Very few z > 1.5 clusters of galaxies are known. It is important to study the properties of galaxies in these clusters and the ICM and, further, to cross-check the reliability of the various mass estimates. This will help to clarify the process of structure formation and how distant clusters may be used to constrain cosmology. AIMS: We present a 84 ks Chandra observation of IRC-0218A, a cluster of galaxies inferred by the presence of a galaxy overdensity in the infrared at a redshift of 1.62 and associated with some XMM emission Methods: Spatial analysis of the Chandra X-ray photon distribution. Results: The Chandra observation of IRC-0218A appears to be entirely dominated by a point-source located at the centroid of the MIR galaxy density. In addition, we detect weak extended emission (2.3 sigma) out to a radius of 25 with a flux of ~ 3 10E-15 erg/s/cm2 in the [0.3-2]keV band. Assuming that clusters evolve similarly, we infer a virial mass of M200 =7.7+/-3.8 10E13Mo. This is marginally compatible with our current estimate of the cluster dynamical mass (based on 10 redshifts), although there is no evidence that the galaxy peculiar velocities correspond to the motions of a virialized structure. The stellar mass enclosed in the inferred X-ray virial radius is estimated to 1-2 10E12 Mo. We provide a detailed account of 28 X-ray point-sources detected in the field.
Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) are a feature imprinted in the density field by acoustic waves travelling in the plasma of the early universe. Their fixed scale can be used as a standard ruler to study the geometry of the universe. BAO have been previously detected using correlation functions and power spectra of the galaxy distribution. In this work, we present a new method for the detection of the real-space structures associated with this feature. These baryon acoustic structures are spherical shells with a relatively small density contrast, surrounding high density central regions. We design a specific wavelet adapted to the search for shells, and exploit the physics of the process by making use of two different mass tracers, introducing a specific statistic to detect the BAO features. We show the effect of the BAO signal in this new statistic when applied to the Lambda - Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) model, using an analytical approximation to the transfer function. We confirm the reliability and stability of our method by using cosmological N-body simulations from the MareNostrum Institut de Ci`encies de lEspai (MICE). We apply our method to the detection of BAO in a galaxy sample drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We use the `Main catalogue to trace the shells, and the Luminous Red Galaxies (LRG) as tracers of the high density central regions. Using this new method, we detect, with a high significance, that the LRGs in our sample are preferentially located close to the centres of shell-like structures in the density field, with characteristics similar to those expected from BAOs. We show that stacking selected shells, we can find their characteristic density profile. We have delineated a new feature of the cosmic web, the BAO shells. As these are real spatial structures, the BAO phenomenon can be studied in detail by examining those shells.
