Ground state energies are obtained using the unrestricted Hartree Fock method for up to four interacting electrons parabolically confined in a quantum dot subject to a magnetic field. Restoring spin and rotational symmetries we recover Hund first rule. With increasing magnetic field, crossovers between ground states with different quantum numbers are found for fixed electron number that are not reproduced by the unrestricted Hartree Fock approximation. These are consistent with the ones obtained with more refined techniques. We confirm the presence of a spin blockade due to a spin mismatch in the ground states of three and four electrons.

We report results for the ground state energies and wave functions obtained by projecting spatially unrestricted Hartree Fock states to eigenstates of the total spin and the angular momentum for harmonic quantum dots with $Nleq 12$ interacting electr ons including a magnetic field states with the correct spatial and spin symmetries have lower energies than those obtained by the unrestricted method. The chemical potential as a function of a perpendicular magnetic field is obtained. Signature of an intrinsic spin blockade effect is found.
We construct a new mean-field theory for quantum (spin-1/2) Heisenberg antiferromagnet in one (1D) and two (2D) dimensions using a Hartree-Fock decoupling of the four-point correlation functions. We show that the solution to the self-consistency equa tions based on two-point correlation functions does not produce any unphysical finite-temperature phase transition in accord with Mermin-Wagner theorem, unlike the common approach based on the mean-field equation for the order parameter. The next-neighbor spin-spin correlation functions, calculated within this approach, reproduce closely the strong renormalization by quantum fluctuations obtained via Bethe ansatz in 1D and a small renormalization of the classical antiferromagnetic state in 2D. The heat capacity approximates with reasonable accuracy the full Bethe ansatz result at all temperatures in 1D. In 2D, we obtain a reduction of the peak height in the heat capacity at a finite temperature that is accessible by high-order $1/T$ expansions.
We investigate ground and excited state transport through small (d = 70 nm) graphene quantum dots. The successive spin filling of orbital states is detected by measuring the ground state energy as a function of a magnetic field. For a magnetic field in-plane of the quantum dot the Zemann splitting of spin states is measured. The results are compatible with a g-factor of 2 and we detect a spin-filling sequence for a series of states which is reasonable given the strength of exchange interaction effects expected for graphene.

We report on numerical studies into the interplay of disorder and electron-electron interactions within the integer quantum Hall regime, where the presence of a strong magnetic field and two-dimensional confinement of the electronic system profoundly affects thermodynamic and transport properties. We emphasise the behaviour of the electronic compressibility, the local density of states, and the Kubo conductivity. Our treatment of the electron-electron interactions relies on the Hartree-Fock approximation so as to achieve system sizes comparable to experimental situations. Our results clearly exhibit manifestations of various interaction-mediated features, such as non-linear screening, local charging, and g-factor enhancement, implying the inadequacy of independent-particle models for comparison with experimental results.
We derive a spin diffusion equation for a spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional electron gas including the Hartree-Fock field resulting from 1st order electron-electron interactions. We find that the lifetime of the persistent spin helix, which emerges for equal linear Rashba- and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions, can be enhanced considerably for large initial spin polarizations due to the Hartree-Fock field. The reason is a reduction of the symmetry-breaking cubic Dresselhaus scattering rate by the Hartree-Fock field. Also higher harmonics are generated and the polarization of the persistent spin helix rotates out of the (Sy,Sz)-plane acquiring a finite Sx-component. This effect becomes more pronounced, when the cubic Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction is large.
