In this paper, a multiple-distribution-function lattice Boltzmann method (MDF-LBM) with multiple-relaxation-time model is proposed for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSEs) which are considered as the coupled convection-diffusion equations (CDEs). Through direct Taylor expansion analysis, we show that the Navier-Stokes equations can be recovered correctly from the present MDF-LBM, and additionally, it is also found that the velocity and pressure can be directly computed through the zero and first-order moments of distribution function. Then in the framework of present MDF-LBM, we develop a locally computational scheme for the velocity gradient where the first-order moment of the non-equilibrium distribution is used, this scheme is also extended to calculate the velocity divergence, strain rate tensor, shear stress and vorticity. Finally, we also conduct some simulations to test the MDF-LBM, and find that the numerical results not only agree with some available analytical and numerical solutions, but also have a second-order convergence rate in space.

We propose a multi-resolution strategy that is compatible with the lattice Greens function (LGF) technique for solving viscous, incompressible flows on unbounded domains. The LGF method exploits the regularity of a finite-volume scheme on a formally unbounded Cartesian mesh to yield robust and computationally efficient solutions. The original method is spatially adaptive, but challenging to integrate with embedded mesh refinement as the underlying LGF is only defined for a fixed resolution. We present an ansatz for adaptive mesh refinement, where the solutions to the pressure Poisson equation are approximated using the LGF technique on a composite mesh constructed from a series of infinite lattices of differing resolution. To solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, this is further combined with an integrating factor for the viscous terms and an appropriate Runge-Kutta scheme for the resulting differential-algebraic equations. The parallelized algorithm is verified through with numerical simulations of vortex rings, and the collision of vortex rings at high Reynolds number is simulated to demonstrate the reduction in computational cells achievable with both spatial and refinement adaptivity.
In the spirit of making high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods more competitive, researchers have developed the hybridized DG methods, a class of discontinuous Galerkin methods that generalizes the Hybridizable DG (HDG), the Embedded DG (EDG) and the Interior Embedded DG (IEDG) methods. These methods are amenable to hybridization (static condensation) and thus to more computationally efficient implementations. Like other high-order DG methods, however, they may suffer from numerical stability issues in under-resolved fluid flow simulations. In this spirit, we introduce the hybridized DG methods for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in entropy variables. Under a suitable choice of the stabilization matrix, the scheme can be shown to be entropy stable and satisfy the Second Law of Thermodynamics in an integral sense. The performance and robustness of the proposed family of schemes are illustrated through a series of steady and unsteady flow problems in subsonic, transonic, and supersonic regimes. The hybridized DG methods in entropy variables show the optimal accuracy order given by the polynomial approximation space, and are significantly superior to their counterparts in conservation variables in terms of stability and robustness, particularly for under-resolved and shock flows.

This paper extends the gas-kinetic scheme for one-dimensional inviscid shallow water equations (J. Comput. Phys. 178 (2002), pp. 533-562) to multidimensional gas dynamic equations under gravitational fields. Four important issues in the construction of a well-balanced scheme for gas dynamic equations are addressed. First, the inclusion of the gravitational source term into the flux function is necessary. Second, to achieve second-order accuracy of a well-balanced scheme, the Chapman-Enskog expansion of the Boltzmann equation with the inclusion of the external force term is used. Third, to avoid artificial heating in an isolated system under a gravitational field, the source term treatment inside each cell has to be evaluated consistently with the flux evaluation at the cell interface. Fourth, the multidimensional approach with the inclusion of tangential gradients in two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases becomes important in order to maintain the accuracy of the scheme. Many numerical examples are used to validate the above issues, which include the comparison between the solutions from the current scheme and the Strang splitting method. The methodology developed in this paper can also be applied to other systems, such as semi-conductor device simulations under electric fields.

In this paper, we perform a more general analysis on the discrete effects of some boundary schemes of the popular one- to three-dimensional DnQq multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model for convection-diffusion equation (CDE). Investigated bo undary schemes include anti-bounce-back(ABB) boundary scheme, bounce-back(BB) boundary scheme and non-equilibrium extrapolation(NEE) boundary scheme. In the analysis, we adopt a transform matrix $textbf{M}$ constructed by natural moments in the evolution equation, and the result of ABB boundary scheme is consistent with the existing work of orthogonal matrix $textbf{M}$. We also find that the discrete effect does not rely on the choice of transform matrix, and obtain a relation to determine some of the relaxation-time parameters which can be used to eliminate the numerical slip completely under some assumptions. In this relation, the weight coefficient is considered as an adjustable parameter which makes the parameter adjustment more flexible. The relaxation factors associated with second moments can be used to eliminate the numerical slip of ABB boundary scheme and BB boundary scheme while the numerical slip can not be eliminated of NEE boundary scheme. Furthermore, we extend the relations to complex-valued CDE, several numerical examples are used to test the relations.
The discrete effect on the boundary condition has been a fundamental topic for the lattice Boltzmann method in simulating heat and mass transfer problems. In previous works based on the halfway anti-bounce-back (ABB) boundary condition for convection -diffusion equations (CDEs), it is reported that the discrete effect cannot be commonly removed in the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model except for a special value of relaxation time. Targeting this point in the present paper, we still proceed within the framework of BGK model for two-dimensional CDEs, and analyze the discrete effect on a non-halfway ABB boundary condition which incorporates the effect of the distance ratio. By analyzing an unidirectional diffusion problem with a parabolic distribution, the theoretical derivations with three different discrete velocity models show that the numerical slip is a combined function of the relaxation time and the distance ratio. Different from previous works, we definitely find that the relaxation time can be freely adjusted by the distance ratio in a proper range to eliminate the numerical slip. Some numerical simulations are carried out to validate the theoretical derivations, and the numerical results for the cases of straight and curved boundaries confirm our theoretical analysis. Finally, it should be noted that the present analysis can be extended from the BGK model to other lattice Boltzmann (LB) collision models for CDEs, which can broaden the parameter range of the relaxation time to approach 0.5.
