The Drude model describes the free-electron conduction in simple metals, governed by the freedom that the mobile electrons have within the material. In strongly correlated systems, however, a significant deviation of the optical conductivity from the simple metallic Drude behavior is observed. Here, we investigate the optical conductivity of the heavy-fermion system CeCu$_{mathrm{6-x}}$Au$_{mathrm{x}}$, using time-resolved, phase-sensitive terahertz spectroscopy. Terahertz electric field creates two types of excitations in heavy-fermion materials: First, the intraband excitations that leave the heavy quasiparticles intact. Second, the resonant interband transitions between the heavy and light parts of the hybridized conduction band that break the Kondo singlet. We find that the Kondo-singlet breaking interband transitions do not create a Drude peak, while the Kondo-retaining intraband excitations yield the expected Drude response; thus, making it possible to separate these two fundamentally different correlated contributions to the optical conductivity.

The dynamical properties of single crystal 1T-TaS$_{2}$ are investigated both in commensurate charge density wave state (CCDW state) and hidden charge density wave state (HCDW state). We develop a useful criterion in time-domain transmission terahert z measurement to judge whether the compound is driven into a metastable state or still in its virgin state. An increase of terahertz conductivity by two orders of magnitude from CCDW state to HCDW state is obtained by taking account of the penetration depth mismatch, which is in agreement with reported emph{dc} transport measurement. Upon weak pumping, only transient processes with rapid decay dynamics are triggered in both CCDW and HCDW states. We compare the conductivity increases in terahertz frequency range between transient and HCDW states and suggest that fluctuated metallic domain walls may develop in the transient states.

We have carried out high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the Cebased heavy fermion compound CePt2In7 that exhibits stronger two-dimensional character than the prototypical heavy fermion system CeCoIn5. Multiple Fermi surface s heets and a complex band structure are clearly resolved. We have also performed detailed band structure calculations on CePt2In7. The good agreement found between our measurements and the calculations suggests that the band renormalization effect is rather weak in CePt2In7. A comparison of the common features of the electronic structure of CePt2In7 and CeCoIn5 indicates that CeCoIn5 shows a much stronger band renormalization effect than CePt2In7. These results provide new information for understanding the heavy fermion behaviors and unconventional superconductivity in Ce-based heavy fermion systems.

The study of (quantum) phase transitions in heavy-fermion compounds relies on a detailed understanding of the microscopic control parameters that induce them. While the influence of external pressure is rather straight forward, atomic substitutions a re more involved. Nonetheless, replacing an elemental constituent of a compound with an isovalent atom is---effects of disorder aside---often viewed as merely affecting the lattice constant. Based on this picture of chemical pressure, the unit-cell volume is identified as an empirical proxy for the Kondo coupling. Here instead, we propose an orbital scenario in which the coupling in complex systems can be tuned by isoelectronic substitutions with little or no effect onto cohesive properties. Starting with the Kondo insulator Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pt$_3$, we consider---within band-theory---isoelectronic substitutions of the pnictogen (Bi$rightarrow$Sb) and/or the precious metal (Pt$rightarrow$Pd). We show for the isovolume series Ce$_3$Bi$_4$(Pt$_{1-x}$Pd$_x$)$_3$ that the Kondo coupling is in fact substantially modified by the different radial extent of the $5d$ (Pt) and $4d$ (Pd) orbitals, while spin-orbit coupling mediated changes are minute. Combining experimental Kondo temperatures with simulated hybridization functions, we also predict effective masses $m^*$, finding excellent agreement with many-body results for Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pt$_3$. Our analysis motivates studying the so-far unknown Kondo insulator Ce$_3$Sb$_4$Pd$_3$, for which we predict $m^*/m_{band}=mathcal{O}(10)$.

The three-dimensional electronic structure and Ce 4f electrons of the heavy fermion superconductor CePt2In7 is investigated. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using variable photon energy establishes the existence of quasi-two and three dimen sional Fermi surface topologies. Temperature-dependent 4d-4f on-resonance photoemission spectroscopies reveal that heavy quasiparticle bands begin to form at a temperature well above the characteristic (coherence) temperature T*. T* emergence may be closely related to crystal electric field splitting, particularly the low-lying heavy band formed by crystal electric field splitting.
We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study heavy fermion superconductor Ce2RhIn8. The Fermi surface is rather complicated and consists of several hole and electron pock- ets. We do not observe kz dispersion of Fermi sheets, which is co nsistent with 2D character of the electronic structure. Comparison of the ARPES data and band structure calculations points to a localized picture of f electrons. Our findings pave the way for understanding the transport and thermodynamical properties of this material.
