The Magnetic Properties of 1111-type Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor (La$_{1-x}$Ba$_{x}$)(Zn$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)AsO in the Low Doping Regime

We investigated the magnetic properties of (La$_{1-x}$Ba$_{x}$)(Zn$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)AsO with $x$ varying from 0.005 to 0.05 at an external magnetic field of 1000 Oe. For doping levels of $x$ $leq$ 0.01, the system remains paramagnetic down to the lowest measurable temperature of 2 K. Only when the doping level increases to $x$ = 0.02 does the ferromagnetic ordering appear. Our analysis indicates that antiferromagnetic exchange interactions dominate for $x$ $leq$ 0.01, as shown by the negative Weiss temperature fitted from the magnetization data. The Weiss temperature becomes positive, i.e., ferromagnetic coupling starts to dominate, for $x$ $geq$ 0.02. The Mn-Mn spin interaction parameter $mid$$2J/k_B$$mid$ is estimated to be in the order of 10 K for both $x$ $leq$ 0.01 (antiferromagnetic ordered state) and $x$ $geq$ 0.02 (ferromagnetic ordered state). Our results unequivocally demonstrate the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in carrier-mediated ferromagnetic systems.

The evolution of the electronic properties of electron-doped (Sr{1-x}La{x})2IrO4 is experimentally explored as the doping limit of La is approached. As electrons are introduced, the electronic ground state transitions from a spin-orbit Mott phase int o an electronically phase separated state, where long-range magnetic order vanishes beyond x = 0.02 and charge transport remains percolative up to the limit of La substitution (x~0.06). In particular, the electronic ground state remains inhomogeneous even beyond the collapse of the parent states long-range antiferromagnetic order, while persistent short-range magnetism survives up to the highest La-substitution levels. Furthermore, as electrons are doped into Sr2IrO4, we observe the appearance of a low temperature magnetic glass-like state intermediate to the complete suppression of antiferromagnetic order. Universalities and differences in the electron-doped phase diagrams of single layer and bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper strontium iridates are discussed.

The electronic and magnetic properties of a new diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, which is isostructural to so-called 122-type Fe-based superconductors, are investigated by x-ray absorption spec troscopy (XAS) and resonance photoemission spectroscopy (RPES). Mn $L_{2,3}$-edge XAS indicates that the doped Mn atoms have the valence 2+ and strongly hybridize with the $4p$ orbitals of the tetrahedrally coordinating As ligands. The Mn $3d$ partial density of states (PDOS) obtained by RPES shows a peak around 4 eV and relatively high between 0-2 eV below the Fermi level ($E_{F}$) with little contribution at $E_{F}$, similar to that of the archetypal DMS Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As. This energy level creates $d^{5}$ electron configuration with $S=5/2$ local magnetic moments at the Mn atoms. Hole carriers induced by K substitution for Ba atoms go into the top of the As $4p$ valence band and are weakly bound to the Mn local spins. The ferromagnetic correlation between the local spins mediated by the hole carriers induces ferromagnetism in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$(Zn$_{1-y}$Mn$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$
We report on the results of x-ray absorption (XAS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and photoemission experiments on {it n}-type Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O ($x=0.05$) thin film, which shows ferromagnetism at room temperature. The XMCD spectra show a multiplet structure, characteristic of the Co$^{2+}$ ion tetrahedrally coordinated by oxygen, suggesting that the ferromagnetism comes from Co ions substituting the Zn site in ZnO. The magnetic field and temperature dependences of the XMCD spectra imply that the non-ferromagnetic Co ions are strongly coupled antiferromagnetically with each other.
Electronic nematicity in correlated metals often occurs alongside another instability such as magnetism. As a result, the question remains whether nematicity alone can drive unconventional superconductivity or anomalous (quantum critical) transport i n such systems. In FeSe, nematicity emerges in isolation, providing a unique opportunity to address this question. Studies to date, however, have proved inconclusive; while signatures of nematic criticality are observed upon sulfur substitution, they appear to be quenched under the application of pressure due to the emergent magnetism. Here, we study the temperature and pressure dependence of the low-temperature resistivity of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ crystals at $x$ values just beyond the nematic quantum critical point. Two distinct components to the resistivity are revealed; one whose magnitude falls with increasing pressure and one which grows upon approaching the magnetic state at higher pressures. These findings indicate that nematic and magnetic critical fluctuations in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ are completely decoupled, in marked contrast to other Fe-based superconductors, and that nematic fluctuations alone may be responsible for the transport signatures of quantum criticality found in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$ at ambient pressure.
The correlation between magnetic properties and microscopic structural aspects in the diluted magnetic semiconductor Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te is investigated by x-ray diffraction and magnetization as a function of the Mn concentration $x$. The occurrence of high ferromagnetic-transition temperatures in the rhombohedrally distorted phase of slowly-cooled Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te is shown to be directly correlated with the formation and coexistence of strongly-distorted Mn-poor and weakly-distorted Mn-rich regions. It is demonstrated that the weakly-distorted phase fraction is responsible for the occurrence of high-transition temperatures in Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te. When the Mn concentration becomes larger, the Mn-rich regions start to switch into the undistorted cubic structure, and the transition temperature is suppressed concurrently. By identifying suitable annealing conditions, we successfully increased the transition temperature to above 200 K for Mn concentrations close to the cubic phase. Structural data indicate that the weakly-distorted phase fraction can be restored at the expense of the cubic regions upon the enhancement of the transition temperature, clearly establishing the direct link between high-transition temperatures and the weakly-distorted Mn-rich phase fraction.
