Weyl nodes are topological objects in three-dimensional metals. Their topological property can be revealed by studying the high-field transport properties of a Weyl semimetal. While the energy of the lowest Landau band (LLB) of a conventional Fermi pocket always increases with magnetic field due to the zero point energy, the LLB of Weyl cones remains at zero energy unless a strong magnetic field couples the Weyl fermions of opposite chirality. In the Weyl semimetal TaP, we achieve such a magnetic coupling between the electron-like Fermi pockets arising from the W1 Weyl fermions. As a result, their LLBs move above chemical potential, leading to a sharp sign reversal in the Hall resistivity at a specific magnetic field corresponding to the W1 Weyl node separation. By contrast, despite having almost identical carrier density, the annihilation is unobserved for the hole-like pockets because the W2 Weyl nodes are much further separated. These key findings, corroborated by other systematic analyses, reveal the nontrivial topology of Weyl fermions in high-field measurements.

As an intermediate state in the topological phase diagram, Dirac semimetals are of particular interest as a platform for studying topological phase transitions under external modulations. Despite a growing theoretical interest in this topic, it remai ns a substantial challenge to experimentally tune the system across topological phase transitions. Here, we investigate the Fermi surface evolution of Cd3As2 under high pressure through magnetotransport. A sudden change in Berry phase occurs at 1.3 GPa along with the unanticipated shrinkage of the Fermi surface, which occurs well below the structure transition point (~2.5 GPa). High pressure X-ray diffraction also reveals an anisotropic compression of the Cd3As2 lattice around a similar pressure. Corroborated by the first-principles calculations we show that an axial compression will shift the Dirac nodes towards the Brillouin zone center and eventually introduces a finite energy gap. The ability to tune the node position, a vital parameter of Dirac semimetals, can have dramatic impacts on the corresponding topological properties such as the Fermi arc surface states and the chiral anomaly. Our study demonstrates axial compression as an efficient approach for manipulating the band topology and exploring the critical phenomena near the topological phase transition in Cd3As2.
Correlated topological magnets are emerging as a new class of quantum materials, exhibiting exotic interacting fermions and unconventional phase transitions. Despite considerable interest, direct observation of the magnetic manipulation of topologica l quasiparticles remains limited. Here we report a correlated topological phase transition in a kagome spin-orbit semimetal, examined by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. By modulating the magnetic order, we observe a clear exchange gap collapse in our spectra, associated with a large renormalization of a spin-orbit-gapped Weyl loop at the Fermi level. This unexpected response suggests the collapse of opposite-spin partner ferromagnetic Weyl loops into a paramagnetic Dirac loop. Taken together with $ab$ $initio$ calculation, our results further indicate that oppositely-charged Weyl points pair up and annihilate under collapse, and the Fermi arc surface states are removed. Our findings suggest a novel topological phase transition driven by magnetic interactions, guiding future exploration of renormalized topology under correlated order parameters.

A Weyl semimetal possesses spin-polarized band-crossings, called Weyl nodes, connected by topological surface arcs. The low-energy excitations near the crossing points behave the same as massless Weyl fermions, leading to exotic properties like chira l anomaly. To have the transport properties dominated by Weyl fermions, Weyl nodes need to locate nearly at the chemical potential and enclosed by pairs of individual Fermi surfaces with nonzero Fermi Chern numbers. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculation, here we show that TaP is a Weyl semimetal with only single type of Weyl fermions, topologically distinguished from TaAs where two types of Weyl fermions contribute to the low-energy physical properties. The simple Weyl fermions in TaP are not only of fundamental interests but also of great potential for future applications. Fermi arcs on the Ta-terminated surface are observed, which appear in a different pattern from that on the As-termination in TaAs and NbAs.
Recent discovery of both gapped and gapless topological phases in weakly correlated electron systems has introduced various relativistic particles and a number of exotic phenomena in condensed matter physics. The Weyl fermion is a prominent example o f three dimensional (3D), gapless topological excitation, which has been experimentally identified in inversion symmetry breaking semimetals. However, their realization in spontaneously time reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking magnetically ordered states of correlated materials has so far remained hypothetical. Here, we report a set of experimental evidence for elusive magnetic Weyl fermions in Mn$_3$Sn, a non-collinear antiferromagnet that exhibits a large anomalous Hall effect even at room temperature. Detailed comparison between our angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals significant bandwidth renormalization and damping effects due to the strong correlation among Mn 3$d$ electrons. Moreover, our transport measurements have unveiled strong evidence for the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions, namely, the emergence of positive magnetoconductance only in the presence of parallel electric and magnetic fields. The magnetic Weyl fermions of Mn$_3$Sn have a significant technological potential, since a weak field ($sim$ 10 mT) is adequate for controlling the distribution of Weyl points and the large fictitious field ($sim$ a few 100 T) in the momentum space. Our discovery thus lays the foundation for a new field of science and technology involving the magnetic Weyl excitations of strongly correlated electron systems.
Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are topological quantum states wherein the electronic bands linearly disperse around pairs of nodes, the Weyl points, of fixed (left or right) chirality. The recent discovery of WSM materials triggered an experimental search fo r the exotic quantum phenomenon known as the chiral anomaly. Via the chiral anomaly nonorthogonal electric and magnetic fields induce a chiral density imbalance that results in an unconventional negative longitudinal magnetoresistance, the chiral magnetic effect. Recent theoretical work suggests that this effect does not require well-defined Weyl nodes. Experimentally however, it remains an open question to what extent it survives when chirality is not well-defined, for example when the Fermi energy is far away from the Weyl points. Here, we establish the detailed Fermi surface topology of the recently identified WSM TaP via a combination of angle-resolved quantum oscillation spectra and band structure calculations. The Fermi surface forms spin-polarized banana-shaped electron and hole pockets attached to pairs of Weyl points. Although the chiral anomaly is therefore ill-defined, we observe a large negative magnetoresistance (NMR) appearing for collinear magnetic and electric fields as observed in other WSMs. In addition, we show experimental signatures indicating that such longitudinal magnetoresistance measurements can be affected by an inhomogeneous current distribution inside the sample in a magnetic field. Our results provide a clear framework how to detect the chiral magnetic effect.
