We present a study of the resolved emission-line regions and an inner dust/gas disk in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3, based on Hubble Space Telescope observations. We show that the extended narrow-line region (ENLR), spanning ~4 kpc, is defined by the intersection of the ionizing bicone of radiation from the AGN and the inner disk, which is not coplanar with the large-scale stellar disk. This intersection leads to different position and opening angles of the ENLR compared to the narrow-line region (NLR). A number of emission-line arcs in the ENLR appear to be continuations of dust lanes in the disk, supporting this geometry. The NLR, which consists of outflowing emission-line knots spanning the central ~650 pc, is in the shape of a backwards S. This shape may arise from rotation of the gas, or it may trace the original fueling flow close to the nucleus that was ionized after the AGN turned on.

We present near-infrared and optical emission-line and stellar kinematics of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 573 using the Near-Infrared Field Spectrograph (NIFS) at Gemini North and Dual Imaging Spectrograph (DIS) at Apache Point Observatory, respectively. By obtaining full kinematic maps of the infrared ionized and molecular gas and stellar kinematics in a 700 x 2100 pc^2 circumnuclear region of Mrk 573, we find that kinematics within the Narrow-Line Region (NLR) are largely due to a combination of both rotation and in situ acceleration of material originating in the host disk. Combining these observations with large-scale, optical long-slit spectroscopy that traces ionized gas emission out to several kpcs, we find that rotation kinematics dominate the majority of the gas. We find that outflowing gas extends to distances less than 1 kpc, suggesting that outflows in Seyfert galaxies may not be powerful enough to evacuate their entire bulges.
We present measurements of radial velocities for the narrow-line region gas (NLR) in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 out to ~1 kpc from the nucleus. The observations consist of two datasets, both using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope: 1) An [O III] slitless spectrum with the G430M grating of the inner 3 around the nucleus, and 2) a long-slit observation centered on the nucleus (PA = 71 deg) using the G430L grating and the 52 x 0.1 aperture. Our results produce radial velocity maps of the emission-line gas. These maps indicate general trends in the gas motion, which include: blueshifts and redshifts on either side of the nucleus, steep velocity rises from systemic up to ~ +/-700 km/s taking place in the inner 0.3 (0.8 kpc) both east and west of the nucleus, gradual velocity descents back to near-systemic values from 0.3-1.0, slightly uneven velocity amplitudes on each side of the nucleus, and narrow velocity ranges over the entire observed region. When fitted to kinematic modeling programs for the NLR gas, the data clearly favor a model where the gas exists in a partially filled bicone, is accelerated radially away from the nucleus, and is followed by a constant deceleration. This geometry and general kinematic model is in agreement with previous work done on the NLR gas of NGC 1068 and NGC 4151. On scales of hundreds of parsecs, we conclude that radial outflow may be a common feature of Seyfert galaxies.
We report on the detection of ultra-fast outflows in the Seyfert~1 galaxy Mrk 590. These outflows are identified through highly blue-shifted absorption lines of OVIII and NeIX in the medium energy grating spectrum and SiXIC and MgXII in the high ener gy grating spectrum on board Chandra X-ray observatory. Our best fit photoionization model requires two absorber components at outflow velocities of 0.176c and 0.0738c and a third tentative component at 0.0867c. The components at 0.0738c and 0.0867c have high ionization parameter and high column density, similar to other ultra-fast outflows detected at low resolution by Tombesi et al. These outflows carry sufficient mass and energy to provide effective feedback proposed by theoretical models. The component at 0.176c, on the other hand, has low ionization parameter and low column density, similar to those detected by Gupta et al. in Ark~564. These absorbers occupy a different locus on the velocity vs. ionization parameter plane and have opened up a new parameter space of AGN outflows. The presence of ultra-fast outflows in moderate luminosity AGNs poses a challenge to models of AGN outflows.
In about half of Seyfert galaxies, the X-ray emission is absorbed by an optically thin, ionized medium, the so-called Warm Absorber, whose origin and location is still a matter of debate. The aims of this paper is to put more constraints on the warm absorber by studying its variability. We analyzed the X-ray spectra of a Seyfert 1 galaxy, Mrk 704, which was observed twice, three years apart, by XMM-Newton. The spectra were well fitted with a two zones absorber, possibly covering only partially the source. The parameters of the absorbing matter - column density, ionization state, covering factor - changed significantly between the two observations. Possible explanations for the more ionized absorber are a torus wind (the source is a polar scattering one) or, in the partial covering scenario, an accretion disk wind. The less ionized absorber may be composed of orbiting clouds in the surroundings of the nucleus, similarly to what already found in other sources, most notably NGC 1365.
We obtained a wide-band spectrum of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 with Suzaku. The observed spectrum was clearly resolved into weak, soft power-law emission, a heavily absorbed power-law component, cold reflection, and many emission lines. The heavily absorbed component, absorbed by gas with a column density of 1.1x10^24 cm^-2, has an intrinsic 2--10 keV luminosity of ~1.6x10^43 erg s^-1, and is considered to be direct emission from the Mrk 3 nucleus. The reflection component was interpreted as reflection of the direct light off cold, thick material; the reflection fraction $R$ was 1.36+/-0.20. The cold material is inferred to be located > 1 pc from the central black hole of Mrk 3 due to the low ionization parameter of iron (xi < 1 erg cm s^-1) and the narrow iron line width (s < 22 eV). A Compton shoulder to the iron line was detected, but the intensity of the shoulder component was less than that expected from spherically distributed Compton-thick material. The weak, soft power-law emission is considered to be scattered light by ionized gas. The existence of many highly-ionized lines from O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Fe in the observed spectrum indicates that the ionized gas has a broad ionized structure, with xi=10--1000. The scattering fraction with respect to the direct light was estimated to be 0.9+/-0.2%, which indicates that the column density of the scattering region is about 3.6x10^22 cm^-2. This high-quality spectrum obtained by Suzaku can be considered a template for studies of Seyfert 2 galaxies.
