The magnetization reversal and spin structure in circular Co/insulator/Ni80Fe20 trilayer dots has been investigated numerically. The effect of dipolar coupling between a soft ferromagnetic Permalloy (Py=Ni80Fe20) layer and a hard ferromagnetic Cobalt layer inside one stack is studied. We find either a stabilization or even a triggering of the vortex state in the Py layer due to the magnetic stray field of the Co layer, while the Co magnetization remains in a single-domain state. Furthermore, for thin Py layers a 360 deg-domain wall is observed. We construct a phase diagram, where regions of vortex stabilization, triggering, and occurrence of a 360 deg domain wall are marked.

We report on detailed broadband ferromagnetic resonance measurements of azimuthal and radial spin wave excitations in circular Permalloy dots in the vortex ground state. Dots with aspect ratio (Beta =height over radius) varied from 0.03 to 0.1 were e xplored. We found that for Beta exceeding approximately 0.05, variation of the spin wave eigenfrequencies with Beta deviates from the predicted dependence. The frequency splitting of two lowest azimuthal modes was observed. The experimentally observed dependence of the frequency splitting on beta was reasonably well described by dynamic splitting model accounting the spin-waves and, vortex gyrotropic mode interaction.
Based on micromagnetic simulations, we report on a novel helical magnetic structure in a soft magnetic film that is sandwiched between and exchange-coupled to two hard magnetic layers. Confined between antiparallel hard magnetic moments, a helix with a turn of 180$^{circ}$ is stable without the presence of an external magnetic field. The magnetic stability is determined by the energy minimization and is a result of an internal field created by exchange interaction and anisotropy. Since the internal field stores magnetic energy, the helix can serve as an energy-storing element in spin-based nanodevices. Due to the significantly different magnetic resonance frequencies, the ferromagnetic and helical ground states are easy to distinguish in a broadband ferromagnetic resonance experiment.
The existence of nonlinear objects of the vortex type in two-dimensional magnetic systems presents itself as one of the most promising candidates for the construction of nanodevices, useful for storing data, and for the construction of reading and wr iting magnetic heads. The vortex appears as the ground state of a magnetic nanodisk whose magnetic moments interact via dipole-dipole potential?. In this work it is investigated the conditions for the formation of vortices in nanodisks in triangular, square, and hexagonal lattices as a function of the size of the lattice and of the strength of the dipole interaction D. Our results show that there is a transition line separating the vortex state from a capacitor like state. This line has a finite size scaling form depending on the size, L, of the system as Dc=D0 +1/A(?1+B*L^2)?. This behavior is obeyed by the three types of lattices. Inside the vortex phase it is possible to identify two types of vortices separated by a constant, D=Dc, line: An in-plane and an out-of-plane vortex. We observed that the out-of-plane phase does not appear for the triangular lattice. In a two layer system the extra layer of dipoles works as an effective out-of-plane anisotropy inducing a large S^z component at the center of the vortex. Also, we analyzed the mechanism for switching the out-of-plane vortex component. Contrary to some reported results, we found evidences that the mechanism is not a creation-annihilation vortex anti-vortex process.
Experimental and theoretical studies of manganese deposition on graphene/Ni(111) shows that a thin ferromagnetic Ni3Mn layer, which is protected by the graphene overlayer, is formed upon Mn intercalation. The electronic bands of graphene are affected by Ni3Mn interlayer formation through a slight reduction of n-type doping compared to graphene/Ni(111) and a suppression of the interface states characteristic of graphene/Ni(111). Our DFT-based theoretical analysis of interface geometric, electronic, and magnetic structure gives strong support to our interpretation of the experimental scanning tunneling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and photoemission results, and shows that the magnetic structure of graphene is strongly influenced by Ni3Mn formation.

Using the ultra low damping NiMnSb half-Heusler alloy patterned into vortex-state magnetic nano-dots, we demonstrate a new concept of non-volatile memory controlled by the frequency. A perpendicular bias magnetic field is used to split the frequency of the vortex core gyrotropic rotation into two distinct frequencies, depending on the sign of the vortex core polarity $p=pm1$ inside the dot. A magnetic resonance force microscope and microwave pulses applied at one of these two resonant frequencies allow for local and deterministic addressing of binary information (core polarity).
