Manipulating the excitation of resonant electric and magnetic multipole moments in structured dielectric media has unlocked many sophisticated electromagnetic functionalities. This article demonstrates the experimental realization of a broadband Huyg ens source. This Huygens source consists of a spherical particle that exhibits a well-defined forward-scattering pattern across more than an octave-spanning spectral band at GHz frequencies, where the scattering in the entire backward hemisphere is suppressed. Two different low-index nonmagnetic spheres are studied that differ in their permittivity. This causes them to offer a different shape for the forward-scattering pattern. The theoretical understanding of this broadband feature is based on the approximate equality of the resonant electric and magnetic multipole moments in both amplitude and phase in low permittivity spheres. This is a key condition to approximate the electromagnetic duality symmetry which, together with the spherical symmetry, suppresses the backscattering. With such a configuration, broadband Huygens sources can be designed even if magnetic materials are unavailable. This article provides guidelines for designing broadband Huygens sources using low-index spheres that could be valuable to a plethora of applications.
We demonstrate ground-state cooling of a trapped ion using radio-frequency (RF) radiation. This is a powerful tool for the implementation of quantum operations, where RF or microwave radiation instead of lasers is used for motional quantum state engi neering. We measure a mean phonon number of $overline{n} = 0.13(4)$ after sideband cooling, corresponding to a ground-state occupation probability of 88(7)%. After preparing in the vibrational ground state, we demonstrate motional state engineering by driving Rabi oscillations between the n=0 and n=1 Fock states. We also use the ability to ground-state cool to accurately measure the motional heating rate and report a reduction by almost two orders of magnitude compared to our previously measured result, which we attribute to carefully eliminating sources of electrical noise in the system.

Applying a magnetic field gradient to a trapped ion allows long-wavelength microwave radiation to produce a mechanical force on the ions motion when internal transitions are driven. We demonstrate such a coupling using a single trapped Yb{171}~ion, a nd use it to produce entanglement between the spin and motional state, an essential step towards using such a field gradient to implement multi-qubit operations.
We present here a small-scale liquid Helium (LHe) immersion cryostat with an innovative optical setup suitable to work in long wavelength radiation ranges and under applied magnetic field. The cryostat is a multi stage device with several shielding i n addition to several optical stages. The system has been designed with an external liquid Nitrogen boiler to reduce the liquid bubbling. The optical and mechanical properties of the optical elements were calculated and optimized for the designed configuration while the optical layout has been simulated and optimized among different configurations based on the geometry of the device. The final design has been optimized for low noise radiation measurements of proximity junction arrays under applied magnetic field in the wavelength range $lambda$=250-2500 $mu$m.
Finding the exact equation of motion for a moving charged particle is one of the oldest open problems in physics. The problem originates in the emission of radiation by an accelerated charge, which must result with a loss of energy and recoil of the charge, adding a correction to the well-known Lorentz force. When radiation reaction is neglected, it is well known that the dynamics of a charge in a plane-wave laser field are inevitably periodic. Here we investigate the long-time dynamics of a charge in a plane wave and show that all current models of radiation reaction strictly forbid periodic dynamics. Consequently, we find that the loss of energy due to radiation reaction actually causes particles to asymptotically accelerate to infinite kinetic energy. Such a phenomenon persists even in weak laser fields and puts forward the possibility of testing the open problem of radiation reaction through long-duration weak-field precision measurements, rather than through strong-field experiments. Our findings suggest realistic conditions for such measurements through the asymptotic frequency shift and energy loss of a charge, which for example can be detected in electron energy loss spectrometers in electron microscopes.
