We present an idea for creation of a crystalline undulator and report its first realization. One face of a silicon crystal was given periodic micro-scratches (trenches) by means of a diamond blade. The X-ray tests of the crystal deformation due to given periodic pattern of surface scratches have shown that a sinusoidal shape is observed on both the scratched surface and the opposite (unscratched) face of the crystal, that is, a periodic sinusoidal deformation goes through the bulk of the crystal. This opens up the possibility for experiments with high-energy particles channeled in crystalline undulator, a novel compact source of radiation.

Tabrizi et al. [physics/0701342] discuss the feasibility of an electron-based crystal undulator (e-CU) by planar channeling of 50 GeV electrons through a periodically bent crystal. We show that their scheme is not feasible. First, their undulator par ameter is K >> 1 always, which destroys photon interference. Second, they overestimate the electron dechanneling length in e-CU by an order of magnitude, which shortens the number N of e-CU periods from 5-15 (as they hope) to just 1-2. This kills their e-CU concept again. We made first simulation of electron channeling in undulated crystal and conclude that an electron-based crystal wiggler is feasible with wiggler strength K=10 and number of periods N=2.
This project exploits charged particles confined as a storage ring beam (proton, deuteron, possibly $^3$He) to search for an intrinsic electric dipole moment (EDM, $vec d$) aligned along the particle spin axis. Statistical sensitivities can approach $10^{-29}$~e$cdot$cm. The challenge will be to reduce systematic errors to similar levels. The ring will be adjusted to preserve the spin polarization, initially parallel to the particle velocity, for times in excess of 15 minutes. Large radial electric fields, acting through the EDM, will rotate the polarization ($vec d timesvec E$). The slow rise in the vertical polarization component, detected through scattering from a target, signals the EDM. The project strategy is outlined. It foresees a step-wise plan, starting with ongoing COSY activities that demonstrate technical feasibility. Achievements to date include reduced polarization measurement errors, long horizontal-plane polarization lifetimes, and control of the polarization direction through feedback from the scattering measurements. The project continues with a proof-of-capability measurement (precursor experiment; first direct deuteron EDM measurement), an intermediate prototype ring (proof-of-principle; demonstrator for key technologies), and finally the high precision electric-field storage ring.
The undulator line of the Shanghai soft X-ray Free-electron Laser facility (SXFEL) has very tight tolerances on the straightness of the electron beam trajectory. However, the beam trajectory cannot meet the lasing requirements due to the influence of beam position, launch angle and quadrupole offsets. Traditional mechanical alignment can only control the rms of offsets to about 100 $mu$m, which is far from reaching the requirement. Further orbit correction can be achieved by beam-based alignment (BBA) method based on electron energy variations. K modulation is used to determine whether the beam passes through the quadrupole magnetic center, and the Dispersion-Free Steering (DFS) method is used to calculate the offsets of quadrupole and BPM. In this paper, a detailed result of simulation is presented which demonstrates that the beam trajectory with rms and standard deviation ($sigma$) less than 10 $mu$m can be obtained.
Triode reflex geometry vircator operating within 3.0 - 4.2 GHz range with efficiency up to 6% is developed and experimentally investigated. Shiftable reflectors are shown to enable frequency tuning and output power control. Radiation frequency and po wer are analyzed for different cathode-anode gap values and varied reflector positions.
We present an example of the practical implementation of a protocol for experimental bifurcation detection based on on-line identification and feedback control ideas. The idea is to couple the experiment with an on-line computer-assisted identificati on/feedback protocol so that the closed-loop system will converge to the open-loop bifurcation points. We demonstrate the applicability of this instability detection method by real-time, computer-assisted detection of period doubling bifurcations of an electronic circuit; the circuit implements an analog realization of the Roessler system. The method succeeds in locating the bifurcation points even in the presence of modest experimental uncertainties, noise and limited resolution. The results presented here include bifurcation detection experiments that rely on measurements of a single state variable and delay-based phase space reconstruction, as well as an example of tracing entire segments of a codimension-1 bifurcation boundary in two parameter space.
