Some form of nonperturbative regularization is necessary if effective field theory treatments of the NN interaction are to yield finite answers. We discuss various regularization schemes used in the literature. Two of these methods involve formally iterating the divergent interaction and then regularizing and renormalizing the resultant amplitude. Either a (sharp or smooth) cutoff can be introduced, or dimensional regularization can be applied. We show that these two methods yield different results after renormalization. Furthermore, if a cutoff is used, the NN phase shift data cannot be reproduced if the cutoff is taken to infinity. We also argue that the assumptions which allow the use of dimensional regularization in perturbative EFT calculations are violated in this problem. Another possibility is to introduce a regulator into the potential before iteration and then keep the cutoff parameter finite. We argue that this does not lead to a systematically-improvable NN interaction.

We compare the subtractive renormalization and the Wilsonian renormalization group approaches in the context of an effective field theory for the two-nucleon system. Based on an exactly solvable model of contact interactions, we observe that the stan dard Wilsonian renormalization group approach with a single cutoff parameter does not cover the whole space spanned by the renormalization scale parameters of the subtractive formalism. In particular, renormalization schemes corresponding to Weinbergs power counting in the case of an unnaturally large scattering length are beyond the region covered by the Wilsonian renormalization group approach. In the framework of pionless effective field theory, also extended by the inclusion of a long-range interaction of separable type, we demonstrate that Weinbergs power counting scheme is consistent in the sense that it leads to a systematic order-by-order expansion of the scattering amplitude.
We present two novel relations between the quasiparticle interaction in nuclear matter and the unique low momentum nucleon-nucleon interaction in vacuum. These relations provide two independent constraints on the Fermi liquid parameters of nuclear ma tter. Moreover, the new constraints define two combinations of Fermi liquid parameters, which are invariant under the renormalization group flow in the particle-hole channels. Using empirical values for the spin-independent Fermi liquid parameters, we are able to compute the major spin-dependent ones by imposing the new constraints as well as the Pauli principle sum rules.
We propose a new regularization scheme to study the bound state of two-nucleon systems in Lattice Effective Field Theory. Inspired by continuum EFT calculation, we study an exponential regulator acting on the leading-order (LO) and next-to-leading or der (NLO) interactions, consisting of local contact terms. By fitting the low-energy coefficients (LECs) to deuteron binding energy and the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) on a lattice simulation, we extract the effective range expansion (ERE) parameters in the $^3S_1$ channel to order $p^2$. We explore the impact of different powers of the regulator on the extracted ERE parameters for the lattice spacing $a=1.97$ fm. Moreover, we investigate how the implementation of the regularization scheme improves the predicted ERE parameters on the lattice spacing in the range of $1.4 le a le 2.6$ fm. Our numerical analysis indicates that for lattice spacing greater than $2$ fm, the predicted observables are very close to the experimental data.
We investigate an extended chiral soliton model which includes $pi, rho, omega$ and $sigma $ mesons as explicit degrees of freedom. The Lagrangian incorporates chiral symmetry and broken scale invariance. A scalar-isoscalar meson $sigma$ is associate d with a quarkonium dilaton field with a mass $msigapprox 550 $MeV. We show that the scalar field with anomalous dimension slightly changes the static and electromagnetic properties of the nucleon. In contrast, it plays a significant role in nucleon-nucleon dynamics and gives an opportunity to describe well the two-nucleon interaction.

The emergence of complex macroscopic phenomena from a small set of parameters and microscopic concepts demonstrates the power and beauty of physical theories. A theory which relates the wealth of data and peculiarities found in nuclei to the small nu mber of parameters and symmetries of quantum chromodynamics is by that standard of exceptional beauty. Decade-long research on computational physics and on effective field theories facilitate the assessment of the presumption that quark masses and strong and electromagnetic coupling constants suffice to parameterize the nuclear chart. By presenting the current status of that enterprise, this article touches the methodology of predicting nuclei by simulating the constituting quarks and gluons and the development of effective field theories as appropriate representations of the fundamental theory. While the nuclear spectra and electromagnetic responses analyzed computationally so far with lattice QCD are in close resemblance to those which intrigued experimentalists a century ago, they also test the theoretical understanding which was unavailable to guide the nuclear pioneers but developed since then. This understanding is shown to be deficient in terms of correlations amongst nuclear observables and their sensitivity to fundamental parameters. By reviewing the transition from one effective field theory to another, from QCD to pionful chiral theories to pionless and eventually to cluster theories, we identify some of those deficiencies and conceptual problems awaiting a solution before QCD can be identified as the high-energy theory from which the nuclear landscape emerges.
