A model consisting of a mixed Kuramoto - Sivashinsky - KdV equation, linearly coupled to an extra linear dissipative equation, is proposed. The model applies to the description of surface waves on multilayered liquid films. The extra equation makes its possible to stabilize the zero solution in the model, opening way to the existence of stable solitary pulses (SPs). Treating the dissipation and instability-generating gain in the model as small perturbations, we demonstrate that balance between them selects two steady-state solitons from their continuous family existing in the absence of the dissipation and gain. The may be stable, provided that the zero solution is stable. The prediction is completely confirmed by direct simulations. If the integration domain is not very large, some pulses are stable even when the zero background is unstable. Stable bound states of two and three pulses are found too. We undertake a systematic exploration of recurrent patterns in a 1-dimensional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky system. For a small, but already rather turbulent system, the long-time dynamics takes place on a low-dimensional invariant manifold. A set of equilib ria offers a coarse geometrical partition of this manifold. A variational method enables us to determine numerically a large number of unstable spatiotemporally periodic solutions. The attracting set appears surprisingly thin - its backbone are several Smale horseshoe repellers, well approximated by intrinsic local 1-dimensional return maps, each with an approximate symbolic dynamics. The dynamics appears decomposable into chaotic dynamics within such local repellers, interspersed by rapid jumps between them.
The Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation is a prototypical chaotic nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) in which the size of the spatial domain plays the role of a bifurcation parameter. We investigate the changing dynamics of the Kuramoto-Sivashin sky PDE by calculating the Lyapunov spectra over a large range of domain sizes. Our comprehensive computation and analysis of the Lyapunov exponents and the associated Kaplan-Yorke dimension provides new insights into the chaotic dynamics of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky PDE, and the transition to its 1D turbulence.

We report numerical simulations of one-dimensional cellular solutions of the stabilized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. This equation offers a range of generic behavior in pattern-forming instabilities of moving interfaces, such as a host of secondary instabilities or transition toward disorder. We compare some of these collective behaviors to those observed in experiments. In particular, destabilization scenarios of bifurcated states are studied in a spatially semi-extended situation, which is common in realistic patterns, but has been barely explored so far.
Periodic waves are investigated in a system composed of a Kuramoto-Sivashinsky - Korteweg-de Vries (KS-KdV) equation, which is linearly coupled to an extra linear dissipative equation. The model describes, e.g., a two-layer liquid film flowing down a n inclined plane. It has been recently shown that the system supports stable solitary pulses. We demonstrate that a perturbation analysis, based on the balance equation for the field momentum, predicts the existence of stable cnoidal waves (CnWs) in the same system. It is found that the mean value U of the wave field u in the main subsystem, but not the mean value of the extra field, affects the stability of the periodic waves. Three different areas can be distinguished inside the stability region in the parameter plane (L,U), where L is the waves period. In these areas, stable are, respectively, CnWs with positive velocity, constant solutions, and CnWs with negative velocity. Multistability, i.e., the coexistence of several attractors, including the waves with several maxima per period, appears at large value of L. The analytical predictions are completely confirmed by direct simulations. Stable waves are also found numerically in the limit of vanishing dispersion, when the KS-KdV equation goes over into the KS one.
We present a novel control methodology to control the roughening processes of semilinear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations in one dimension, which we exemplify with the stochastic Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. The original equation is split into a linear stochastic and a nonlinear deterministic equation so that we can apply linear feedback control methods. Our control strategy is then based on two steps: first, stabilize the zero solution of the deterministic part and, second, control the roughness of the stochastic linear equation. We consider both periodic controls and point actuated ones, observing in all cases that the second moment of the solution evolves in time according to a power-law until it saturates at the desired controlled value.
