The origin of the monoclinic distortion and domain formation in the quasi two-dimensional layer compound NbTe$_2$ is investigated. Angle-resolved photoemission shows that the Fermi surface is pseudogapped over large portions of the Brillouin zone. Ab initio calculation of the electron and phonon bandstructure as well as the static RPA susceptibility lead us to conclude that Fermi surface nesting and electron-phonon coupling play a key role in the lowering of the crystal symmetry and in the formation of the charge density wave phase.

We have measured Hall effect, magnetotransport and magnetostriction on the field induced phases of single crystalline UPt$_2$Si$_2$ in magnetic fields up to 60,T at temperatures down to 50,mK. For the magnetic field applied along the $c$ axis we obse rve strong changes in the Hall effect at the phase boundaries. From a comparison to band structure calculations utilizing the concept of a dual nature of the uranium 5$f$ electrons, we find evidence for field induced topological changes of the Fermi surface due to at least one Lifshitz transition. Furthermore, we find a unique history dependence of the magnetotransport and magnetostriction data, indicating that the Lifshitz type transition is of a discontinuous nature, as predicted for interacting electron systems.
Triangular lattice of rare-earth ions with interacting effective spin-$1/2$ local moments is an ideal platform to explore the physics of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, crystal electric fields, and geometric al frustration. The Yb delafossites, NaYbCh$_2$ (Ch=O, S, Se) with Yb ions forming a perfect triangular lattice, have been suggested to be candidates for QSLs. Previous thermodynamics, nuclear magnetic resonance, and muon spin rotation measurements on NaYbCh$_2$ have supported the suggestion of the QSL ground states. The key signature of a QSL, the spin excitation continuum, arising from the spin quantum number fractionalization, has not been observed. Here we perform both elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as detailed thermodynamic measurements on high-quality single-crystalline NaYbSe$_2$ samples to confirm the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 40 mK, and further reveal a clear signature of magnetic excitation continuum extending from 0.1 to 2.5 meV. The comparison between the structure of the magnetic excitation spectra and the theoretical expectation from the spinon continuum suggests that the ground state of NaYbSe$_2$ is a QSL with a spinon Fermi surface.

The Kondo lattice model is a paradigmatic model for the description of local moment systems, a class of materials exhibiting a range of strongly correlated phenomena including heavy fermion formation, magnetism, quantum criticality and unconventional superconductivity. Conventional theoretical approaches invoke fractionalization of the local moment spin through large-N and slave particle methods. In this work we develop a new formalism, based instead on non-canonical degrees of freedom. We demonstrate that the graded Lie algebra su(2|2) provides a powerful means of organizing correlations on the Kondo lattice through a splitting of the electronic degree of freedom, in a manner which entwines the conduction electrons with the local moment spins. This offers a novel perspective on heavy fermion formation. Unlike slave-particle methods, non-canonical degrees of freedom generically allow for a violation of the Luttinger sum rule, and we interpret recent angle resolved photoemission experiments on Ce-115 systems in view of this.

Electronic structure of the three-dimensional colossal magnetoresistive perovskite La1-xSrxMnO3 has been established using soft-X-ray ARPES with its intrinsically sharp definition of three-dimensional electron momentum. The experimental results show much weaker polaronic coupling compared to the bilayer manganites and are consistent with the GGA+U band structure. The experimental Fermi surface unveils the canonical topology of alternating three-dimensional electron spheres and hole cubes, with their shadow contours manifesting the rhombohedral lattice distortion. This picture has been confirmed by one-step photoemission calculations including displacement of the apical oxygen atoms. The rhombohedral distortion is neutral to the Jahn-Teller effect and thus polaronic coupling, but affects the double-exchange electron hopping and thus the colossal magnetoresistance effect.

Uniquely in Cu2OSeO3, the Skyrmions, which are topologically protected magnetic spin vortex-like objects, display a magnetoelectric coupling and can be manipulated by externally applied electric (E) fields. Here, we explore the E-field coupling to th e magnetoelectric Skyrmion lattice phase, and study the response using neutron scattering. Giant E-field induced rotations of the Skyrmion lattice are achieved that span a range of $sim$25$^{circ}$. Supporting calculations show that an E-field-induced Skyrmion distortion lies behind the lattice rotation. Overall, we present a new approach to Skyrmion control that makes no use of spin-transfer torques due to currents of either electrons or magnons.
