We study the emergence of magnetism and its interplay with structural properties in a two dimensional molecular crystal of cyclacenes, using density functional theory (DFT). Isolated cyclacenes with an even number of fused benzenes host two unpaired electrons in two topological protected zero modes, at the top and bottom carbon rings that form the molecule. We show that, in the gas phase, electron repulsion promotes an open-shell singlet with strong intramolecular antiferromagnetic exchange. We consider a closed packing triangular lattice crystal phase and we find a strong dependence of the band structure and magnetic interactions on the rotation angle of the cyclacenes with respect to the crystal lattice vectors. The orientational ground state maximizes the intermolecular hybridization, yet local moments survive. Intermolecular exchange is computed to be antiferromagnetic, and DFT predicts a broken symmetry $120^circ$ spin phase reflecting the frustration of the intermolecular spin coupling. Thus, the cyclacene crystal realizes a bilayer of two antiferromagnetically coupled S = 1/2 triangular lattices. Our results provide a bottom-up route towards carbon based strongly correlated platforms in two dimensions.

Magnetic skyrmionium can be used as a nanometer-scale non-volatile information carrier, which shows no skyrmion Hall effect due to its special structure carrying zero topological charge. Here, we report the static and dynamic properties of an isolate d nanoscale skyrmionium in a frustrated magnetic monolayer, where the skyrmionium is stabilized by competing interactions. The frustrated skyrmionium has a size of about $10$ nm, which can be further reduced by tuning perpendicular magnetic anisotropy or magnetic field. It is found that the nanoscale skyrmionium driven by the damping-like spin-orbit torque shows directional motion with a favored Bloch-type helicity. A small driving current or magnetic field can lead to the transformation of an unstable Neel-type skyrmionium to a metastable Bloch-type skyrmionium. A large driving current may result in the distortion and collapse of the Bloch-type skyrmionium. Our results are useful for the understanding of frustrated skyrmionium physics, which also provide guidelines for the design of spintronic devices based on topological spin textures.
Graphene in the quantum Hall regime exhibits a multi-component structure due to the electronic spin and chirality degrees of freedom. While the applied field breaks the spin symmetry explicitly, we show that the fate of the chirality SU(2) symmetry i s more involved: the leading symmetry-breaking terms differ in origin when the Hamiltonian is projected onto the central (n=0) rather than any of the other Landau levels. Our description at the lattice level leads to a Harper equation; in its continuum limit, the ratio of lattice constant a and magnetic length l_B assumes the role of a small control parameter in different guises. The leading symmetry-breaking terms are direct (n=0) and exchange (n different from 0) terms, which are algebraically small in a/l_B. We comment on the Haldane pseudopotentials for graphene, and evaluate the easy-plane anisotropy of the graphene ferromagnet.
Magnetism in single-side hydrogenated (C$_2$H) and fluorinated (C$_2$F) graphene is analyzed in terms of the Heisenberg model with parameters determined from first principles. We predict a frustrated ground state for both systems, which means the ins tability of collinear spin structures and sheds light on the absence of a conventional magnetic ordering in defective graphene demonstrated in recent experiments. Moreover, our findings suggest a highly correlated magnetic behavior at low temperatures offering the possibility of a spin-liquid state.

We consider a magnetic skyrmion crystal formed at the surface of a topological insulator. Incorporating the exchange interaction between the helical Dirac surface states and the periodic Neel or Bloch skyrmion texture, we obtain the resulting electro nic band structures. We discuss the properties of the reconstructed skyrmion bands, namely the impact of symmetries on the energies and Berry curvature. We find substantive qualitative differences between the Neel and Bloch cases, with the latter generically permitting a low-energy tight-binding representation whose parameters are tightly constrained by symmetries. We explicitly construct the associated Wannier orbitals, which resemble the ring-like chiral bound states of helical Dirac fermions coupled to a single skyrmion in a ferromagnetic background. We construct a two-band tight-binding model with complex nearest-neighbor hoppings which captures the salient topological features of the low-energy bands. Our results are relevant to magnetic topological insulators (TIs), as well as to TI-magnetic thin film heterostructures, in which skyrmion crystals may be stabilized.

We present a detailed first principles study of Fe-pnictides with particular emphasis on competing magnetic interactions, structural phase transition, giant magneto-elastic coupling and its effect on phonons. The exchange interactions $J_{i,j}(R)$ ar e calculated up to $approx 12 $AA $. We find that $J_{i,j}(R)$ has an oscillatory character with an envelop decaying as $1/R^3$ along the stripe-direction while it is very short range along the diagonal direction and antiferromagnetic. A brief discussion of the neutron scattering determination of these exchange constants from a single crystal sample with orthorhombic twinning is given. The lattice parameter dependence of the exchange constants, $dJ_{i,j}/da$ are calculated for a simple spin-Peierls like model to explain the fine details of the tetragonal-orthorhombic phase transition. We then discuss giant magneto-elastic effects in these systems. We show that when the Fe-spin is turned off the optimized c-values are shorter than experimetnal values by 1.4 AA $ $ for CaFe$_2$As$_2$, by 0.4 AA $ $ for BaFe$_2$As$_2$, and by 0.13 AA $ $ for LaOFeAs. Finally, we show that Fe-spin is also required to obtain the right phonon energies, in particular As c-polarized and Fe-Fe in-plane modes. Since treating iron as magnetic ion always gives much better results than non-magnetic ones and since there is no large c-axis reduction during the normal to superconducting phase transition, the iron magnetic moment should be present in Fe-pnictides at all times. We discuss the implications of our results on the mechanism of superconductivity in these fascinating Fe-pnictide systems.
