Tellurium (Te) is a narrow bandgap semiconductor with a unique chiral crystal structure. The topological nature of electrons in the Te conduction band can be studied by realizing n-type doping using atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique on two-dimensional (2D) Te film. In this work, we fabricated and measured the double-gated n-type Te Hall-bar devices, which can operate as two separate or coupled electron layers controlled by the top gate and back gate. Profound Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are observed in both top and bottom electron layers. Landau level hybridization between two layers, compound and charge-transferable bilayer quantum Hall states at filling factor 4, 6, and 8 are analyzed. Our work opens the door for the study of Weyl physics in coupled bilayer systems of 2D materials.

The Halperin $(m,m,n)$ bilayer quantum Hall states are studied on thin cylinders. In this limit, charge density wave patterns emerge that are characteristic of the underlying quantum Hall state. The general patterns are worked out from a variant of t he plasma analogy. Torus degeneracies are recovered, and for some important special cases a connection to well-known spin chain physics is made. By including interlayer tunneling, we also work out the critical behavior of a possible phase transition between the $(331)$ state and the non-abelian Moore-Read state in the thin cylinder limit.

Dirac and Weyl nodal materials can host low-energy relativistic quasiparticles. Under strong magnetic fields, the topological properties of Dirac/Weyl materials can directly manifest through quantum Hall states. However, most Dirac/Weyl nodes generic ally exist in semimetals without exploitable bandgaps due to their accidental band-crossing origin. Here we report the first experimental observation of Weyl fermions in a semiconductor. Tellurene, the 2D form of tellurium, possesses chiral crystal structure which induces unconventional Weyl nodes with a hedgehog-like radial spin texture near the conduction band edge. We synthesize high-quality n-type tellurene by a hydrothermal method with subsequent dielectric doping and detect a topologically non-trivial pi Berry phase in quantum Hall sequences. Our work expands the spectrum of Weyl matter into semiconductors and offers a new platform to design novel quantum devices by marrying the advantages of topological materials to versatile semiconductors.
The direct-current (dc) $sigma_{xx}^{dc}$ and alternating-current (ac) $sigma_{xx}^{ac}=sigma_1-isigma_2$ conductivities of a wide (46 nm) GaAs quantum well with the bilayer electron density distribution are measured. It is found that the magnetic fi eld dependence of $sigma_{xx}$ exhibits three sets of oscillations related to the transitions between Landau levels in symmetric and antisymmetric subbands and with the transitions occurring owing to the Zeeman splitting of these subbands. The analysis of the frequency dependence of the ac conductivity and the $sigma_1 / sigma_2$ ratio demonstrates that the conductivity at the minima of oscillations is determined by the hopping mechanism.
We report on the fabrication and transport studies of a single-layer graphene p-n junction. Carrier type and density in two adjacent regions are individually controlled by electrostatic gating using a local top gate and a global back gate. A function alized Al203 oxide that adheres to graphene and does not significantly affect its electronic properties is described. Measurements in the quantum Hall regime reveal new plateaus of two-terminal conductance across the junction at 1 and 3/2 times the quantum of conductance, e2/h, consistent with theory.
We fabricate high-mobility p-type few-layer WSe2 field-effect transistors and surprisingly observe a series of quantum Hall (QH) states following an unconventional sequence predominated by odd-integer states under a moderate strength magnetic field. By tilting the magnetic field, we discover Landau level (LL) crossing effects at ultra-low coincident angles, revealing that the Zeeman energy is about three times as large as the cyclotron energy near the valence band top at {Gamma} valley. This result implies the significant roles played by the exchange interactions in p-type few-layer WSe2, in which itinerant or QH ferromagnetism likely occurs. Evidently, the {Gamma} valley of few-layer WSe2 offers a unique platform with unusually heavy hole-carriers and a substantially enhanced g-factor for exploring strongly correlated phenomena.
