This paper addresses sparse signal reconstruction under various types of structural side constraints with applications in multi-antenna systems. Side constraints may result from prior information on the measurement system and the sparse signal structure. They may involve the structure of the sensing matrix, the structure of the non-zero support values, the temporal structure of the sparse representationvector, and the nonlinear measurement structure. First, we demonstrate how a priori information in form of structural side constraints influence recovery guarantees (null space properties) using L1-minimization. Furthermore, for constant modulus signals, signals with row-, block- and rank-sparsity, as well as non-circular signals, we illustrate how structural prior information can be used to devise efficient algorithms with improved recovery performance and reduced computational complexity. Finally, we address the measurement system design for linear and nonlinear measurements of sparse signals. Moreover, we discuss the linear mixing matrix design based on coherence minimization. Then we extend our focus to nonlinear measurement systems where we design parallel optimization algorithms to efficiently compute stationary points in the sparse phase retrieval problem with and without dictionary learning.

In the paper we study a deep learning based method to solve the multicell power control problem for sum rate maximization subject to per-user rate constraints and per-base station (BS) power constraints. The core difficulty of this problem is how to ensure that the learned power control results by the deep neural network (DNN) satisfy the per-user rate constraints. To tackle the difficulty, we propose to cascade a projection block after a traditional DNN, which projects the infeasible power control results onto the constraint set. The projection block is designed based on a geometrical interpretation of the constraints, which is of low complexity, meeting the real-time requirement of online applications. Explicit-form expression of the backpropagated gradient is derived for the proposed projection block, with which the DNN can be trained to directly maximize the sum rate via unsupervised learning. We also develop a heuristic implementation of the projection block to reduce the size of DNN. Simulation results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method over existing deep learning and numerical optimization~methods, and show the robustness of the proposed method with the model mismatch between training and testing~datasets.
In this work, we consider the problem of jointly minimizing the average cost of sampling and transmitting status updates by users over a wireless channel subject to average Age of Information (AoI) constraints. Errors in the transmission may occur an d a scheduling policy has to decide if the users sample a new packet or attempt for retransmission of the packet sampled previously. The cost consists of both sampling and transmission costs. The sampling of a new packet after a failure imposes an additional cost on the system. We formulate a stochastic optimization problem with the average cost in the objective under average AoI constraints. To solve this problem, we propose three scheduling policies; a) a dynamic policy, that is centralized and requires full knowledge of the state of the system, b) two stationary randomized policies that require no knowledge of the state of the system. We utilize tools from Lyapunov optimization theory in order to provide the dynamic policy, and we prove that its solution is arbitrary close to the optimal one. In order to provide the randomized policies, we model the system by utilizing Discrete Time Markov Chain (DTMC). We provide closed-form and approximated expressions for the average AoI and its distribution, for each randomized policy. Simulation results show the importance of providing the option to transmit an old packet in order to minimize the total average cost.
In this work we consider a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) system that employs an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and a differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation, and study the design of the radiated waveforms and of the receive filters employed by the radar and the users. The approach is communication-centric, in the sense that a radar-oriented objective is optimized under constraints on the average transmit power, the power leakage towards specific directions, and the error rate of each user, thus safeguarding the communication quality of service (QoS). We adopt a unified design approach allowing a broad family of radar objectives, including both estimation- and detection-oriented merit functions. We devise a suboptimal solution based on alternating optimization of the involved variables, a convex restriction of the feasible search set, and minorization-maximization, offering a single algorithm for all of the radar merit functions in the considered family. Finally, the performance is inspected through numerical examples.
The communication cost of distributed optimization algorithms is a major bottleneck in their scalability. This work considers a parameter-server setting in which the worker is constrained to communicate information to the server using only $R$ bits p er dimension. We show that $mathbf{democratic}$ $mathbf{embeddings}$ from random matrix theory are significantly useful for designing efficient and optimal vector quantizers that respect this bit budget. The resulting polynomial complexity source coding schemes are used to design distributed optimization algorithms with convergence rates matching the minimax optimal lower bounds for (i) Smooth and Strongly-Convex objectives with access to an Exact Gradient oracle, as well as (ii) General Convex and Non-Smooth objectives with access to a Noisy Subgradient oracle. We further propose a relaxation of this coding scheme which is nearly minimax optimal. Numerical simulations validate our theoretical claims.

We study the problem of reconstructing an unknown matrix M of rank r and dimension d using O(rd poly log d) Pauli measurements. This has applications in quantum state tomography, and is a non-commutative analogue of a well-known problem in compressed sensing: recovering a sparse vector from a few of its Fourier coefficients. We show that almost all sets of O(rd log^6 d) Pauli measurements satisfy the rank-r restricted isometry property (RIP). This implies that M can be recovered from a fixed (universal) set of Pauli measurements, using nuclear-norm minimization (e.g., the matrix Lasso), with nearly-optimal bounds on the error. A similar result holds for any class of measurements that use an orthonormal operator basis whose elements have small operator norm. Our proof uses Dudleys inequality for Gaussian processes, together with bounds on covering numbers obtained via entropy duality.
