In this paper, we study the optimal wireless streaming of a multi-quality tiled 360 virtual reality (VR) video from a multi-antenna server to multiple single-antenna users in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system. In the scenario without user transcoding, we jointly optimize beamforming and subcarrier, transmission power, and rate allocation to minimize the total transmission power. This problem is a challenging mixed discretecontinuous optimization problem. We obtain a globally optimal solution for small multicast groups, an asymptotically optimal solution for a large antenna array, and a suboptimal solution for the general case. In the scenario with user transcoding, we jointly optimize the quality level selection, beamforming, and subcarrier, transmission power, and rate allocation to minimize the weighted sum of the average total transmission power and the transcoding power. This problem is a two-timescale mixed discrete-continuous optimization problem, which is even more challenging than the problem for the scenario without user transcoding. We obtain a globally optimal solution for small multicast groups, an asymptotically optimal solution for a large antenna array, and a low-complexity suboptimal solution for the general case. In this paper, we study the optimal transmission of a multi-quality tiled 360 virtual reality (VR) video from a multi-antenna server (e.g., access point or base station) to multiple single-antenna users in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-orth ogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system. We minimize the total transmission power with respect to the subcarrier allocation constraints, rate allocation constraints, and successful transmission constraints, by optimizing the beamforming vector and subcarrier, transmission power and rate allocation. The formulated resource allocation problem is a challenging mixed discrete-continuous optimization problem. We obtain an asymptotically optimal solution in the case of a large antenna array, and a suboptimal solution in the general case. As far as we know, this is the first work providing optimization-based design for 360 VR video transmission in MIMO-OFDMA systems. Finally, by numerical results, we show that the proposed solutions achieve significant improvement in performance compared to the existing solutions.
We propose a new method for the visual quality assessment of 360-degree (omnidirectional) videos. The proposed method is based on computing multiple spatio-temporal objective quality features on viewports extracted from 360-degree videos. A new model is learnt to properly combine these features into a metric that closely matches subjective quality scores. The main motivations for the proposed approach are that: 1) quality metrics computed on viewports better captures the user experience than metrics computed on the projection domain; 2) the use of viewports easily supports different projection methods being used in current 360-degree video systems; and 3) no individual objective image quality metric always performs the best for all types of visual distortions, while a learned combination of them is able to adapt to different conditions. Experimental results, based on both the largest available 360-degree videos quality dataset and a cross-dataset validation, demonstrate that the proposed metric outperforms state-of-the-art 360-degree and 2D video quality metrics.
Virtual reality systems today cannot yet stream immersive, retina-quality virtual reality video over a network. One of the greatest challenges to this goal is the sheer data rates required to transmit retina-quality video frames at high resolutions a nd frame rates. Recent work has leveraged the decay of visual acuity in human perception in novel gaze-contingent video compression techniques. In this paper, we show that reducing the motion-to-photon latency of a system itself is a key method for improving the compression ratio of gaze-contingent compression. Our key finding is that a client and streaming server system with sub-15ms latency can achieve 5x better compression than traditional techniques while also using simpler software algorithms than previous work.
In this paper, an energy efficiency (EE) game in a MIMO multiple access channel (MAC) communication system is considered. The existence and the uniqueness of the Nash Equilibrium (NE) is affirmed. A bisection search algorithm is designed to find this unique NE. Despite being sub-optimal for deploying the $varepsilon$-approximate NE of the game when the number of antennas in transmitter is unequal to receivers, the policy found by the proposed algorithm is shown to be more efficient than the classical allocation techniques. Moreover, compared to the general algorithm based on fractional programming technique, our proposed algorithm is easier to implement. Simulation shows that even the policy found by proposed algorithm is not the NE of the game, the deviation w.r.t. to the exact NE is small and the resulted policy actually Pareto-dominates the unique NE of the game at least for 2-user situation.
Free positioning of receivers is one of the key requirements for many wireless power transfer (WPT) applications, required from the end-user point of view. However, realization of stable and effective wireless power transfer for freely positioned rec eivers is technically challenging task because of the requirement of complex control and tuning. In this paper, we propose a concept of automatic receiver tracking and power channeling for multi-transmitter WPT systems using uncoupled transmitter and uncoupled repeaters. Each transmitter-repeater pair forms an independent power transfer channel providing an effective link for the power flow from the transmitter to the receiver. The proposed WPT system is capable of maintaining stable output power with constant high efficiency regardless of the receiver position and without having any active control or tuning. The proposed concept is numerically and experimentally verified by using a four-transmitter WPT system in form of a linear array. The experimental results show that the efficiency of the proposed WPT system can reach 94.5% with a variation less than 2% against the receiver position.
