The extraction of nonstationary signals from blind and semi-blind multivariate observations is a recurrent problem. Numerous algorithms have been developed for this problem, which are based on the exact or approximate joint diagonalization of second or higher order cumulant matrices/tensors of multichannel data. While a great body of research has been dedicated to joint diagonalization algorithms, the selection of the diagonalized matrix/tensor set remains highly problem-specific. Herein, various methods for nonstationarity identification are reviewed and a new general framework based on hypothesis testing is proposed, which results in a classification/clustering perspective to semi-blind source separation of nonstationary components. The proposed method is applied to noninvasive fetal ECG extraction, as case study.

We develop a unified approach to hypothesis testing for various types of widely used functional linear models, such as scalar-on-function, function-on-function and function-on-scalar models. In addition, the proposed test applies to models of mixed t ypes, such as models with both functional and scalar predictors. In contrast with most existing methods that rest on the large-sample distributions of test statistics, the proposed method leverages the technique of bootstrapping max statistics and exploits the variance decay property that is an inherent feature of functional data, to improve the empirical power of tests especially when the sample size is limited and the signal is relatively weak. Theoretical guarantees on the validity and consistency of the proposed test are provided uniformly for a class of test statistics.
In this work, we consider the problem of blind source separation (BSS) by departing from the usual linear model and focusing on the linear-quadratic (LQ) model. We propose two provably robust and computationally tractable algorithms to tackle this pr oblem under separability assumptions which require the sources to appear as samples in the data set. The first algorithm generalizes the successive nonnegative projection algorithm (SNPA), designed for linear BSS, and is referred to as SNPALQ. By explicitly modeling the product terms inherent to the LQ model along the iterations of the SNPA scheme, the nonlinear contributions of the mixing are mitigated, thus improving the separation quality. SNPALQ is shown to be able to recover the ground truth factors that generated the data, even in the presence of noise. The second algorithm is a brute-force (BF) algorithm, which is used as a post-processing step for SNPALQ. It enables to discard the spurious (mixed) samples extracted by SNPALQ, thus broadening its applicability. The BF is in turn shown to be robust to noise under easier-to-check and milder conditions than SNPALQ. We show that SNPALQ with and without the BF postprocessing is relevant in realistic numerical experiments.
In this paper, we consider the problem of distributed sequential detection using wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in the presence of imperfect communication channels between the sensors and the fusion center (FC). We assume that sensor observations ar e spatially dependent. We propose a copula-based distributed sequential detection scheme that characterizes the spatial dependence. Specifically, each local sensor collects observations regarding the phenomenon of interest and forwards the information obtained to the FC over noisy channels. The FC fuses the received messages using a copula-based sequential test. Moreover, we show the asymptotic optimality of the proposed copula-based sequential test. Numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.
Multivariate measurements taken at irregularly sampled locations are a common form of data, for example in geochemical analysis of soil. In practical considerations predictions of these measurements at unobserved locations are of great interest. For standard multivariate spatial prediction methods it is mandatory to not only model spatial dependencies but also cross-dependencies which makes it a demanding task. Recently, a blind source separation approach for spatial data was suggested. When using this spatial blind source separation method prior the actual spatial prediction, modelling of spatial cross-dependencies is avoided, which in turn simplifies the spatial prediction task significantly. In this paper we investigate the use of spatial blind source separation as a pre-processing tool for spatial prediction and compare it with predictions from Cokriging and neural networks in an extensive simulation study as well as a geochemical dataset.
Radio tomographic imaging (RTI) is an emerging technology for localization of physical objects in a geographical area covered by wireless networks. With attenuation measurements collected at spatially distributed sensors, RTI capitalizes on spatial l oss fields (SLFs) measuring the absorption of radio frequency waves at spatial locations along the propagation path. These SLFs can be utilized for interference management in wireless communication networks, environmental monitoring, and survivor localization after natural disasters such as earthquakes. Key to the success of RTI is to accurately model shadowing as the weighted line integral of the SLF. To learn the SLF exhibiting statistical heterogeneity induced by spatially diverse environments, the present work develops a Bayesian framework entailing a piecewise homogeneous SLF with an underlying hidden Markov random field model. Utilizing variational Bayes techniques, the novel approach yields efficient field estimators at affordable complexity. A data-adaptive sensor selection strategy is also introduced to collect informative measurements for effective reconstruction of the SLF. Numerical tests using synthetic and real datasets demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed approach to radio tomography and channel-gain estimation.
