The novel concept of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) is investigated, where the incident wireless signal is divided into transmitted and reflected signals passing into both sides of the space surrounding the surface, thus facilitating a full-space manipulation of signal propagation. Based on the introduced basic signal model of `STAR, three practical operating protocols for STAR-RISs are proposed, namely energy splitting (ES), mode switching (MS), and time switching (TS). Moreover, a STAR-RIS aided downlink communication system is considered for both unicast and multicast transmission, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) sends information to two users, i.e., one on each side of the STAR-RIS. A power consumption minimization problem for the joint optimization of the active beamforming at the BS and the passive transmission and reflection beamforming at the STAR-RIS is formulated for each of the proposed operating protocols, subject to communication rate constraints of the users. For ES, the resulting highly-coupled non-convex optimization problem is solved by an iterative algorithm, which exploits the penalty method and successive convex approximation. Then, the proposed penalty-based iterative algorithm is extended to solve the mixed-integer non-convex optimization problem for MS. For TS, the optimization problem is decomposed into two subproblems, which can be consecutively solved using state-of-the-art algorithms and convex optimization techniques. Finally, our numerical results reveal that: 1) the TS and ES operating protocols are generally preferable for unicast and multicast transmission, respectively; and 2) the required power consumption for both scenarios is significantly reduced by employing the proposed STAR-RIS instead of conventional reflecting/transmiting-only RISs.

Different from traditional reflection-only reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RISs (STAR-RISs) represent a novel technology, which extends the textit{half-space} coverage to textit{full-space} cover age by simultaneously transmitting and reflecting incident signals. STAR-RISs provide new degrees-of-freedom (DoF) for manipulating signal propagation. Motivated by the above, a novel STAR-RIS assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) (STAR-RIS-NOMA) system is proposed in this paper. Our objective is to maximize the achievable sum rate by jointly optimizing the decoding order, power allocation coefficients, active beamforming, and transmission and reflection beamforming. However, the formulated problem is non-convex with intricately coupled variables. To tackle this challenge, a suboptimal two-layer iterative algorithm is proposed. Specifically, in the inner-layer iteration, for a given decoding order, the power allocation coefficients, active beamforming, transmission and reflection beamforming are optimized alternatingly. For the outer-layer iteration, the decoding order of NOMA users in each cluster is updated with the solutions obtained from the inner-layer iteration. Moreover, an efficient decoding order determination scheme is proposed based on the equivalent-combined channel gains. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed STAR-RSI-NOMA system, aided by our proposed algorithm, outperforms conventional RIS-NOMA and RIS assisted orthogonal multiple access (RIS-OMA) systems.
Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is a promising solution to reconfigure the wireless environment in a controllable way. To compensate for the double-fading attenuation in the RIS-aided link, a large number of passive reflecting elements (REs) are conventionally deployed at the RIS, resulting in large surface size and considerable circuit power consumption. In this paper, we propose a new type of RIS, called active RIS, where each RE is assisted by active loads (negative resistance), that reflect and amplify the incident signal instead of only reflecting it with the adjustable phase shift as in the case of a passive RIS. Therefore, for a given power budget at the RIS, a strengthened RIS-aided link can be achieved by increasing the number of active REs as well as amplifying the incident signal. We consider the use of an active RIS to a single input multiple output (SIMO) system. {However, it would unintentionally amplify the RIS-correlated noise, and thus the proposed system has to balance the conflict between the received signal power maximization and the RIS-correlated noise minimization at the receiver. To achieve this goal, it has to optimize the reflecting coefficient matrix at the RIS and the receive beamforming at the receiver.} An alternating optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. Specifically, the receive beamforming is obtained with a closed-form solution based on linear minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) criterion, while the reflecting coefficient matrix is obtained by solving a series of sequential convex approximation (SCA) problems. Simulation results show that the proposed active RIS-aided system could achieve better performance over the conventional passive RIS-aided system with the same power budget.
In this paper, the minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimation for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted wireless communication systems is investigated. In the considered setting, each row vector of the equivalent channel matrix from the base station (BS) to the users is shown to be Bessel $K$ distributed, and all these row vectors are independent of each other. By introducing a Gaussian scale mixture model, we obtain a closed-form expression for the MMSE estimate of the equivalent channel, and determine analytical upper and lower bounds on the mean square error. Using the central limit theorem, we conduct an asymptotic analysis of the MMSE estimate, and show that the upper bound on the mean square error of the MMSE estimate is equal to the asymptotic mean square error of the MMSE estimation when the number of reflecting elements at the IRS tends to infinity. Numerical simulations show that the gap between the upper and lower bounds are very small, and they almost overlap with each other at medium signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels and moderate number of elements at the IRS.
We introduce a novel system setup where a backscatter device operates in the presence of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). In particular, we study the bistatic backscatter communication (BackCom) system assisted by an IRS. The phase shifts at the IRS are optimized jointly with the transmit beamforming vector of the carrier emitter to minimize the transmit power consumption at the carrier emitter whilst guaranteeing a required BackCom performance. The unique channel characteristics arising from multiple reflections at the IRS render the optimization problem highly non-convex. Therefore, we jointly utilize the minorization-maximization algorithm and the semidefinite relaxation technique to present an approximate solution for the optimal IRS phase shift design. We also extend our analytical results to the monostatic BackCom system. Numerical results indicate that the introduction of the IRS brings about considerable reductions in transmit power, even with moderate IRS sizes, which can be translated to range increases over the non-IRS-assisted BackCom system.

In intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided wireless communication systems, channel state information (CSI) is crucial to achieve its promising passive beamforming gains. However, CSI errors are inevitable in practice and generally correlated over the IRS reflecting elements due to the limited training with discrete phase shifts, which degrade the data transmission rate and reliability. In this paper, we focus on investigating the effect of CSI errors to the outage performance in an IRS-aided multiuser downlink communication system. Specifically, we aim to jointly optimize the active transmit precoding vectors at the access point (AP) and passive discrete phase shifts at the IRS to minimize the APs transmit power, subject to the constraints on the maximum CSI-error induced outage probability for the users. First, we consider the single-user case and derive the users outage probability in terms of the mean signal power (MSP) and variance of the received signal at the user. Since there is a trade-off in tuning these two parameters to minimize the outage probability, we propose to maximize their weighted sum with the optimal weight found by one-dimensional search. Then, for the general multiuser case, since the users outage probabilities are difficult to obtain in closed-form due to the inter-user interference, we propose a novel constrained stochastic successive convex approximation (CSSCA) algorithm, which replaces the non-convex outage probability constraints with properly designed convex surrogate approximations. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed robust beamfoming algorithms and show their significant performance improvement over various benchmark schemes.
