Granulation of quantum matter -- the formation of persistent small-scale patterns -- is realized in the images of quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates perturbed by a periodically modulated interaction. Our present analysis of a mean-field approximation suggests that granulation is caused by the gradual transformation of phase undulations into density undulations. This is achieved by a suitably large modulation frequency, while for low enough frequencies the system exhibits a quasi-adiabatic regime. We show that the persistence of granulation is a result of the irregular evolution of the phase of the wavefunction representing an irreversible process. Our model predictions agree with numerical solutions of the Schrodinger equation and experimental observations. The numerical computations reveal the emergent many-body correlations behind these phenomena via the multi-configurational time-dependent Hartree theory for bosons (MCTDHB).

The dynamics of a discrete soliton in an array of Bose-Einstein condensates under the action of a periodically time-modulated atomic scattering length (``Feshbach-resonance management, FRM) is investigated. The cases of both slow and rapid modulation , in comparison with the tunneling frequency, are considered. We employ a discrete variational approach for the analysis of the system. The existence of nonlinear resonances and chaos is predicted at special values of the driving frequency. Soliton splitting is observed in numerical simulations. In the case of the rapid modulation, we derive an averaged equation, which is a generalized discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation, including higher-order effective nonlinearities and intersite nonlinear interactions. Thus the predicted discrete FRM solitons are a direct matter-wave analog of recently investigated discrete diffraction-managed optical solitons.
We investigate phase separation of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of two-component atoms and one-component molecules with a homonuclear Feshbach resonance. We develop a full model for dilute atomic and molecular gases including correlation of the F eshbach resonance and all kinds of interparticle interactions, and numerically calculate order parameters of the BECs in spherical harmonic oscillator traps at zero temperature with the Bogoliubovs classical field approximation. As a result, we find out that the Feshbach resonance can induce two types of phase separation. The actual phase structures and density profiles of the trapped gases are predicted in the whole parameter region, from the atom dominant regime to the molecule dominant regime. We focus on the role of the molecules in the phase separation. Especially in the atom dominant regime, the role of the molecules is described through effective interactions derived from our model. Furthermore we show that a perturbative and semi-classical limit of our model reproduces the conventional atomic BEC (single-channel) model.
We investigate controlled phase separation of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the proximity of mixed-spin-channel Feshbach resonance in the |F = 1, mF = +1> and |F = 2,mF = -1> states of 87Rb at a magnetic field of 9.10 G. Phase separation occurs on the lower magnetic-field side of the Feshbach resonance while the two components overlap on the higher magnetic-field side. The Feshbach resonance curve of the scattering length is obtained from the shape of the atomic cloud by comparison with the numerical analysis of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations.

An atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is often described as a macroscopic object which can be approximated by a coherent state. This, on the surface, would appear to indicate that its behavior should be close to being classical. In this paper, we clarify the extent of how classical a BEC is by exploring the semiclassical equations for BECs under the mean field Gaussian approximation. Such equations describe the dynamics of a condensate in the classical limit in terms of the variables < x > and < p > as well as their respective variances. We compare the semiclassical solution with the full quantum solution based on the Gross-Pitaevskii Equation (GPE) and find that the interatomic interactions which generate nonlinearity make the system less classical. On the other hand, many qualitative features are captured by the semiclassical equations, and the equations to be solved are far less computationally intensive than solving the GPE which make them ideal for providing quick diagnostics, and for obtaining new intuitive insight.
One-particle reduced density matrix functional theory would potentially be the ideal approach for describing Bose-Einstein condensates. It namely replaces the macroscopically complex wavefunction by the simple one-particle reduced density matrix, the refore provides direct access to the degree of condensation and still recovers quantum correlations in an exact manner. We eventually initiate and establish this novel theory by deriving the respective universal functional $mathcal{F}$ for general homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates with arbitrary pair interaction. Most importantly, the successful derivation necessitates a particle-number conserving modification of Bogoliubov theory and a solution of the common phase dilemma of functional theories. We then illustrate this novel approach in several bosonic systems such as homogeneous Bose gases and the Bose-Hubbard model. Remarkably, the general form of $mathcal{F}$ reveals the existence of a universal Bose-Einstein condensation force which provides an alternative and more fundamental explanation for quantum depletion.
