Forecasting on sparse multivariate time series (MTS) aims to model the predictors of future values of time series given their incomplete past, which is important for many emerging applications. However, most existing methods process MTSs individually, and do not leverage the dynamic distributions underlying the MTSs, leading to sub-optimal results when the sparsity is high. To address this challenge, we propose a novel generative model, which tracks the transition of latent clusters, instead of isolated feature representations, to achieve robust modeling. It is characterized by a newly designed dynamic Gaussian mixture distribution, which captures the dynamics of clustering structures, and is used for emitting timeseries. The generative model is parameterized by neural networks. A structured inference network is also designed for enabling inductive analysis. A gating mechanism is further introduced to dynamically tune the Gaussian mixture distributions. Extensive experimental results on a variety of real-life datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

The multivariate time series forecasting has attracted more and more attention because of its vital role in different fields in the real world, such as finance, traffic, and weather. In recent years, many research efforts have been proposed for forec asting multivariate time series. Although some previous work considers the interdependencies among different variables in the same timestamp, existing work overlooks the inter-connections between different variables at different time stamps. In this paper, we propose a simple yet efficient instance-wise graph-based framework to utilize the inter-dependencies of different variables at different time stamps for multivariate time series forecasting. The key idea of our framework is aggregating information from the historical time series of different variables to the current time series that we need to forecast. We conduct experiments on the Traffic, Electricity, and Exchange-Rate multivariate time series datasets. The results show that our proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art baseline methods.
Multivariate time series prediction has attracted a lot of attention because of its wide applications such as intelligence transportation, AIOps. Generative models have achieved impressive results in time series modeling because they can model data d istribution and take noise into consideration. However, many existing works can not be widely used because of the constraints of functional form of generative models or the sensitivity to hyperparameters. In this paper, we propose ScoreGrad, a multivariate probabilistic time series forecasting framework based on continuous energy-based generative models. ScoreGrad is composed of time series feature extraction module and conditional stochastic differential equation based score matching module. The prediction can be achieved by iteratively solving reverse-time SDE. To the best of our knowledge, ScoreGrad is the first continuous energy based generative model used for time series forecasting. Furthermore, ScoreGrad achieves state-of-the-art results on six real-world datasets. The impact of hyperparameters and sampler types on the performance are also explored. Multivariate time-series forecasting plays a crucial role in many real-world applications. It is a challenging problem as one needs to consider both intra-series temporal correlations and inter-series correlations simultaneously. Recently, there have been multiple works trying to capture both correlations, but most, if not all of them only capture temporal correlations in the time domain and resort to pre-defined priors as inter-series relationships. In this paper, we propose Spectral Temporal Graph Neural Network (StemGNN) to further improve the accuracy of multivariate time-series forecasting. StemGNN captures inter-series correlations and temporal dependencies textit{jointly} in the textit{spectral domain}. It combines Graph Fourier Transform (GFT) which models inter-series correlations and Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) which models temporal dependencies in an end-to-end framework. After passing through GFT and DFT, the spectral representations hold clear patterns and can be predicted effectively by convolution and sequential learning modules. Moreover, StemGNN learns inter-series correlations automatically from the data without using pre-defined priors. We conduct extensive experiments on ten real-world datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of StemGNN. Code is available at https://github.com/microsoft/StemGNN/

Clustering has become a core technology in machine learning, largely due to its application in the field of unsupervised learning, clustering, classification, and density estimation. A frequentist approach exists to hand clustering based on mixture m odel which is known as the EM algorithm where the parameters of the mixture model are usually estimated into a maximum likelihood estimation framework. Bayesian approach for finite and infinite Gaussian mixture model generates point estimates for all variables as well as associated uncertainty in the form of the whole estimates posterior distribution. The sole aim of this survey is to give a self-contained introduction to concepts and mathematical tools in Bayesian inference for finite and infinite Gaussian mixture model in order to seamlessly introduce their applications in subsequent sections. However, we clearly realize our inability to cover all the useful and interesting results concerning this field and given the paucity of scope to present this discussion, e.g., the separated analysis of the generation of Dirichlet samples by stick-breaking and Polyas Urn approaches. We refer the reader to literature in the field of the Dirichlet process mixture model for a much detailed introduction to the related fields. Some excellent examples include (Frigyik et al., 2010; Murphy, 2012; Gelman et al., 2014; Hoff, 2009). This survey is primarily a summary of purpose, significance of important background and techniques for Gaussian mixture model, e.g., Dirichlet prior, Chinese restaurant process, and most importantly the origin and complexity of the methods which shed light on their modern applications. The mathematical prerequisite is a first course in probability. Other than this modest background, the development is self-contained, with rigorous proofs provided throughout.
Platelet products are both expensive and have very short shelf lives. As usage rates for platelets are highly variable, the effective management of platelet demand and supply is very important yet challenging. The primary goal of this paper is to pre sent an efficient forecasting model for platelet demand at Canadian Blood Services (CBS). To accomplish this goal, four different demand forecasting methods, ARIMA (Auto Regressive Moving Average), Prophet, lasso regression (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) and LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) networks are utilized and evaluated. We use a large clinical dataset for a centralized blood distribution centre for four hospitals in Hamilton, Ontario, spanning from 2010 to 2018 and consisting of daily platelet transfusions along with information such as the product specifications, the recipients characteristics, and the recipients laboratory test results. This study is the first to utilize different methods from statistical time series models to data-driven regression and a machine learning technique for platelet transfusion using clinical predictors and with different amounts of data. We find that the multivariate approaches have the highest accuracy in general, however, if sufficient data are available, a simpler time series approach such as ARIMA appears to be sufficient. We also comment on the approach to choose clinical indicators (inputs) for the multivariate models.
