Following up on a proposal to use four-wave mixing in an underdense plasma at mildly relativistic laser intensities to produce vastly more energetic x-ray pulses [V. M. Malkin and N. J. Fisch, Phys. Rev. E, 101, 023211 (2020)], we perform the first numerical simulations in one dimension to demonstrate amplification of a short high frequency seed through four-wave mixing. We find that parasitic processes including phase modulation and spatial pulse slippage limit the amplification efficiency. We numerically explore the previously proposed dual seed configuration as a countermeasure against phase modulation. We show how this approach tends to be thwarted by longitudinal slippage. In the examples we considered, the best performance was in fact achieved through optimization of signal and pump parameters in a single seed configuration.

Frequency upconversion of an electromagnetic wave can occur in ionized plasma with decreasing electric permittivity and in split-ring resonator-structure metamaterials with decreasing magnetic permeability. We develop a general theory to describe the evolution of the wave frequency, amplitude, and energy density in homogeneous media with a temporally decreasing refractive index. We find that upconversion of the wave frequency is necessarily accompanied by partitioning of the wave energy into low-frequency modes, which sets an upper limit on the energy conversion efficiency. The efficiency limits are obtained for both varying permittivity and varying permeability.

A kinetic formalism of parametric decay of a large amplitude lower hybrid pump wave into runaway electron mode and a uppersideband mode is investigated. The pump and the sideband exert a ponderomotive force on runaway electrons, driving the runaway m ode. The density perturbation associated with the latter beats with the oscillatory velocity due to the pump to produce the sideband. The finite parallel velocity spread of the runaway electrons turns the parametric instability into a stimulated compton scattering process where growth rate scales as the square of the pump amplitude. The large phase velocity waves thus generated can potentially generate relativistic electrons.
Exact four-photon resonance of collinear planar laser pulses is known to be prohibited by the classical dispersion law of electromagnetic waves in plasma. We show here that the renormalization produced by an arbitrarily small relativistic electron no nlinearity removes this prohibition. The laser frequency shifts in collinear resonant four-photon scattering increase with laser intensities. For laser pulses of frequencies much greater than the electron plasma frequency, the shifts can also be much greater than the plasma frequency and even nearly double the input laser frequency at still small relativistic electron nonlinearities. This may enable broad range tunable lasers of very high frequencies and powers. Since the four-photon scattering does not rely on the Langmuir wave, which is very sensitive to plasma homogeneity, such lasers would also be able to operate at much larger plasma inhomogeneities than lasers based on stimulated Raman scattering in plasma.
Efficient frequency conversion of photons has important applications in optical quantum technology because the frequency range suitable for photon manipulation and communication usually varies widely. Recently, an efficient frequency conversion syste m using a double-$Lambda$ four-wave mixing (FWM) process based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has attracted considerable attention because of its potential to achieve a nearly 100% conversion efficiency (CE). To obtain such a high CE, the spontaneous emission loss in this resonant-type FWM system must be suppressed considerably. A simple solution is to arrange the applied laser fields in a backward configuration. However, the phase mismatch due to this configuration can cause a significant decrease in CE. Here, we demonstrate that the phase mismatch can be effectively compensated by introducing the phase shift obtained by two-photon detuning. Under optimal conditions, we observe a wavelength conversion from 780 to 795 nm with a maximum CE of 91.2(6)% by using this backward FWM system at an optical depth of 130 in cold rubidium atoms. The current work represents an important step toward achieving low-loss, high-fidelity EIT-based quantum frequency conversion.
Laser frequency can be upconverted in a plasma undergoing ionization. For finite ionization rates, the laser pulse energy is partitioned into a pair of counter-propagating waves and static transverse currents. The wave amplitudes are determined by th e ionization rates and the input pulse duration. The strongest output waves can be obtained when the plasma is fully ionized in a time that is shorter than the pulse duration. The static transverse current can induce a static magnetic field with instant ionization, but it dissipates as heat if the ionization time is longer than a few laser periods. This picture comports with experimental data, providing a description of both laser frequency upconverters as well as other laser-plasma interaction with evolving plasma densities.
