The next technological breakthrough in millimeter-submillimeter astronomy is 3D imaging spectrometry with wide instantaneous spectral bandwidths and wide fields of view. The total optimization of the focal-plane instrument, the telescope, the observing strategy, and the signal-processing software must enable efficient removal of foreground emission from the Earths atmosphere, which is time-dependent and highly nonlinear in frequency. Here we present TiEMPO: Time-Dependent End-to-End Model for Post-process Optimization of the DESHIMA Spectrometer. TiEMPO utilizes a dynamical model of the atmosphere and parametrized models of the astronomical source, the telescope, the instrument, and the detector. The output of TiEMPO is a time-stream of sky brightness temperature and detected power, which can be analyzed by standard signal-processing software. We first compare TiEMPO simulations with an on-sky measurement by the wideband DESHIMA spectrometer and find good agreement in the noise power spectral density and sensitivity. We then use TiEMPO to simulate the detection of a line emission spectrum of a high-redshift galaxy using the DESHIMA 2.0 spectrometer in development. The TiEMPO model is open source. Its modular and parametrized design enables users to adapt it to design and optimize the end-to-end performance of spectroscopic and photometric instruments on existing and future telescopes.

Characterization of the electronic band structure of solid state materials is routinely performed using photoemission spectroscopy. Recent advancements in short-wavelength light sources and electron detectors give rise to multidimensional photoemissi on spectroscopy, allowing parallel measurements of the electron spectral function simultaneously in energy, two momentum components and additional physical parameters with single-event detection capability. Efficient processing of the photoelectron event streams at a rate of up to tens of megabytes per second will enable rapid band mapping for materials characterization. We describe an open-source workflow that allows user interaction with billion-count single-electron events in photoemission band mapping experiments, compatible with beamlines at $3^{text{rd}}$ and $4^{text{th}}$ generation light sources and table-top laser-based setups. The workflow offers an end-to-end recipe from distributed operations on single-event data to structured formats for downstream scientific tasks and storage to materials science database integration. Both the workflow and processed data can be archived for reuse, providing the infrastructure for documenting the provenance and lineage of photoemission data for future high-throughput experiments.

The nature of dark matter, dark energy and large-scale gravity pose some of the most pressing questions in cosmology today. These fundamental questions require highly precise measurements, and a number of wide-field spectroscopic survey instruments a re being designed to meet this requirement. A key component in these experiments is the development of a simulation tool to forecast science performance, define requirement flow-downs, optimize implementation, demonstrate feasibility, and prepare for exploitation. We present SPOKES (SPectrOscopic KEn Simulation), an end-to-end simulation facility for spectroscopic cosmological surveys designed to address this challenge. SPOKES is based on an integrated infrastructure, modular function organization, coherent data handling and fast data access. These key features allow reproducibility of pipeline runs, enable ease of use and provide flexibility to update functions within the pipeline. The cyclic nature of the pipeline offers the possibility to make the science output an efficient measure for design optimization and feasibility testing. We present the architecture, first science, and computational performance results of the simulation pipeline. The framework is general, but for the benchmark tests, we use the Dark Energy Spectrometer (DESpec), one of the early concepts for the upcoming project, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). We discuss how the SPOKES framework enables a rigorous process to optimize and exploit spectroscopic survey experiments in order to derive high-precision cosmological measurements optimally.
Versatile Video Coding (VVC) is the most recent international video coding standard jointly developed by ITU-T and ISO/IEC, which has been finalized in July 2020. VVC allows for significant bit-rate reductions around 50% for the same subjective video quality compared to its predecessor, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). One year after finalization, VVC support in devices and chipsets is still under development, which is aligned with the typical development cycles of new video coding standards. This paper presents open-source software packages that allow building a complete VVC end-to-end toolchain already one year after its finalization. This includes the Fraunhofer HHI VVenC library for fast and efficient VVC encoding as well as HHIs VVdeC library for live decoding. An experimental integration of VVC in the GPAC software tools and FFmpeg media framework allows packaging VVC bitstreams, e.g. encoded with VVenC, in MP4 file format and using DASH for content creation and streaming. The integration of VVdeC allows playback on the receiver. Given these packages, step-by-step tutorials are provided for two possible application scenarios: VVC file encoding plus playback and adaptive streaming with DASH.
Recently, neural approaches to spoken content retrieval have become popular. However, they tend to be restricted in their vocabulary or in their ability to deal with imbalanced test settings. These restrictions limit their applicability in keyword se arch, where the set of queries is not known beforehand, and where the system should return not just whether an utterance contains a query but the exact location of any such occurrences. In this work, we propose a model directly optimized for keyword search. The model takes a query and an utterance as input and returns a sequence of probabilities for each frame of the utterance of the query having occurred in that frame. Experiments show that the proposed model not only outperforms similar end-to-end models on a task where the ratio of positive and negative trials is artificially balanced, but it is also able to deal with the far more challenging task of keyword search with its inherent imbalance. Furthermore, using our system to rescore the outputs an LVCSR-based keyword search system leads to significant improvements on the latter.
We create a new task-oriented dialog platform (MEEP) where agents are given considerable freedom in terms of utterances and API calls, but are constrained to work within a push-button environment. We include facilities for collecting human-human dial og corpora, and for training automatic agents in an end-to-end fashion. We demonstrate MEEP with a dialog assistant that lets users specify trip destinations.
