While information is ubiquitously generated, shared, and analyzed in a modern-day life, there is still some controversy around the ways to asses the amount and quality of information inside a noisy optical channel. A number of theoretical approaches based on, e.g., conditional Shannon entropy and Fisher information have been developed, along with some experimental validations. Some of these approaches are limited to a certain alphabet, while others tend to fall short when considering optical beams with non-trivial structure, such as Hermite-Gauss, Laguerre-Gauss and other modes with non-trivial structure. Here, we propose a new definition of classical Shannon information via the Wigner distribution function, while respecting the Heisenberg inequality. Following this definition, we calculate the amount of information in a Gaussian, Hermite-Gaussian, and Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes in juxtaposition and experimentally validate it by reconstruction of the Wigner distribution function from the intensity distribution of structured laser beams. We experimentally demonstrate the technique that allows to infer field structure of the laser beams in singular optics to assess the amount of contained information. Given the generality, this approach of defining information via analyzing the beam complexity is applicable to laser modes of any topology that can be described by well-behaved functions. Classical Shannon information defined in this way is detached from a particular alphabet, i.e. communication scheme, and scales with the structural complexity of the system. Such a synergy between the Wigner distribution function encompassing the information in both real and reciprocal space, and information being a measure of disorder, can contribute into future coherent detection algorithms and remote sensing.

The general idea of information entropy provided by C.E. Shannon hangs over everything we do and can be applied to a great variety of problems once the connection between a distribution and the quantities of interest is found. The Shannon information entropy essentially quantify the information of a quantity with its specific distribution, for which the information entropy based methods have been deeply developed in many scientific areas including physics. The dynamical properties of heavy-ion collisions (HICs) process make it difficult and complex to study the nuclear matter and its evolution, for which Shannon information entropy theory can provide new methods and observables to understand the physical phenomena both theoretically and experimentally. To better understand the processes of HICs, the main characteristics of typical models, including the quantum molecular dynamics models, thermodynamics models, and statistical models, etc, are briefly introduced. The typical applications of Shannon information theory in HICs are collected, which cover the chaotic behavior in branching process of hadron collisions, the liquid-gas phase transition in HICs, and the isobaric difference scaling phenomenon for intermediate mass fragments produced in HICs of neutron-rich systems. Even though the present applications in heavy-ion collision physics are still relatively simple, it would shed light on key questions we are seeking for. It is suggested to further develop the information entropy methods in nuclear reactions models, as well as to develop new analysis methods to study the properties of nuclear matters in HICs, especially the evolution of dynamics system.

Entropic measures provide analytic tools to help us understand correlation in quantum systems. In our previous work, we calculated linear entropy and von Neumann entropy as entanglement measures for the ground state and lower lying excited states in helium-like systems. In this work, we adopt another entropic measure, Shannon entropy, to probe the nature of correlation effects. Besides the results of the Shannon entropy in coordinate space for the singlet ground states of helium-like systems including positronium negative ion, hydrogen negative ion, helium atom, and lithium positive ion, we also show results for systems with nucleus charge around the ionization threshold.
We present the first experimental observation of modulation instability of partially spatially incoherent light beams in non-instantaneous nonlinear media. We show that even in such a nonlinear partially coherent system (of weakly-correlated particle s) patterns can form spontaneously. Incoherent MI occurs above a specific threshold that depends on the beams coherence properties (correlation distance), and leads to a periodic train of one-dimensional (1D) filaments. At a higher value of nonlinearity, incoherent MI displays a two-dimensional (2D) instability and leads to self-ordered arrays of light spots.

Machine learning models are known to memorize the unique properties of individual data points in a training set. This memorization capability can be exploited by several types of attacks to infer information about the training data, most notably, mem bership inference attacks. In this paper, we propose an approach based on information leakage for guaranteeing membership privacy. Specifically, we propose to use a conditional form of the notion of maximal leakage to quantify the information leaking about individual data entries in a dataset, i.e., the entrywise information leakage. We apply our privacy analysis to the Private Aggregation of Teacher Ensembles (PATE) framework for privacy-preserving classification of sensitive data and prove that the entrywise information leakage of its aggregation mechanism is Schur-concave when the injected noise has a log-concave probability density. The Schur-concavity of this leakage implies that increased consensus among teachers in labeling a query reduces its associated privacy cost. Finally, we derive upper bounds on the entrywise information leakage when the aggregation mechanism uses Laplace distributed noise.
Information encryption and security is a prerequisite for information technology which can be realized by optical metasurface owing to its arbitrary manipulation over the wavelength, polarization, phase and amplitude of light. So far information enco ding can be implemented by the metasurface in one dimensional (1D) mode (either wavelength or polarization) only with several combinations of independent channels. Here we successfully apply dielectric metasurfaces in a 2D mode (both wavelength and polarization) with far more combinations of independent channels to encrypt information, which therefore enhances the encryption security dramatically. Six independent channels by two circular polarization states (RCP and LCP) and three visible wavelengths (633 nm, 532 nm and 473 nm) in 2D mode can produce 63 combinations available to information encoding, in sharp contrast with 7 combinations by 3 independent channels in 1D mode. This 2D mode encoding strategy paves a novel pathway for escalating the security level of information in multichannel information encryption, anti-counterfeiting, optical data storage, and information processing.
