Novel categories of electronic devices and quantum materials are obtained by pipelining the unitary evolution of electron quantum states as described by Schroedingers equation with non-unitary processes that interrupt the coherent propagation of electrons. These devices and materials reside in the fascinating transition regime between quantum mechanics and classical physics. The devices are designed such that a nonreciprocal unitary state evolution is achieved by means of a broken inversion symmetry, for example as induced at material interfaces. This coherent state evolution is interrupted by individual inelastic scattering events caused by defects coupled to an environment. Two-terminal non-unitary quantum devices, for example, feature nonreciprocal conductance in linear response. Thus, they are exemptions to Onsagers reciprocal relation, and they challenge the second law of thermodynamics. Implementing the device function into the unit cells of materials or meta-materials yields novel functionalities in 2D and 3D materials, at interfaces, and in heterostructures.

Topological edge states exhibit dissipationless transport and electrically-driven topological phase transitions, making them ideal for next-generation transistors that are not constrained by Moores law. Nevertheless, their dispersion has never been p robed and is often assumed to be simply linear, without any rigorous justification. Here we determine the non-linear electrical response of topological edge states in the ballistic regime and demonstrate the way this response ascertains the presence of symmetry breaking terms in the edge dispersion, such as deviations from non-linearity and tilted spin quantization axes. The non-linear response stems from discontinuities in the band occupation on either side of a Zeeman gap, and its direction is set by the spin orientation with respect to the Zeeman field. We determine the edge dispersion for several classes of topological materials and discuss experimental measurement.
We investigate an effective low energy theory of HgTe quantum wells near their mass inversion thickness in a perpendicular magnetic field. By comparison of the effective band structure with a more elaborated and well-established model, the parameter regime and the validity of the effective model is scrutinized. Optical transitions in HgTe quantum wells are analyzed. We find selection rules which we functionalize to optically manipulate edge state transport. Qualitatively, our findings equally apply to optical edge current manipulation in graphene.
Higher-order exchange interactions and quantum effects are widely known to play an important role in describing the properties of low-dimensional magnetic compounds. Here we identify the recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) Cr I3 as a quantum non-Heisenberg material with properties far beyond an Ising magnet as initially assumed. We find that biquadratic exchange interactions are essential to quantitatively describe the magnetism of CrI3 but requiring quantum rescaling corrections to reproduce its thermal properties. The quantum nature of the heat bath represented by discrete electron-spin and phonon-spin scattering processes induced the formation of spin fluctuations in the low temperature regime. These fluctuations induce the formation of metastable magnetic domains evolving into a single macroscopic magnetization or even a monodomain over surface areas of a few micrometers. Such domains display hybrid characteristics of Neel and Bloch types with a narrow domain wall width in the range of 3-5 nm. Similar behaviour is expected for the majority of 2D vdW magnets where higher-order exchange interactions are appreciable.

The effect of thermal fluctuations on spin-transfer switching has been studied for a broad range of time scales (sub-ns to seconds) in a model system, a uniaxial thin film nanomagnet. The nanomagnet is incorporated into a spin-valve nanopillar, which is subject to spin-polarized current pulses of variable amplitude and duration. Two physical regimes are clearly distinguished: a long pulse duration regime, in which reversal occurs by spin-transfer assisted thermal activation over an energy barrier, and a short time large pulse amplitude regime, in which the switching probability is determined by the spin angular momentum in the current pulse.

We realize p-p-p junctions in few-layer black phosphorus (BP) devices, and use magneto-transport measurements to study the equilibration and transmission of edge states at the interfaces of regions with different charge densities. We observe both ful l equilibration, where all edge channels equilibrate and are equally partitioned at the interfaces, and partial equilibration, where only equilibration only takes place among modes of the same spin polarization. Furthermore, the inner p-region with low-doping level in the junction can function as a filter for highly doped p-regions which demonstrates gate-tunable transmission of edge channels.
