Non-Volatile Main Memories (NVMMs) have recently emerged as promising technologies for future memory systems. Generally, NVMMs have many desirable properties such as high density, byte-addressability, non-volatility, low cost, and energy efficiency, at the expense of high write latency, high write power consumption and limited write endurance. NVMMs have become a competitive alternative of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM), and will fundamentally change the landscape of memory systems. They bring many research opportunities as well as challenges on system architectural designs, memory management in operating systems (OSes), and programming models for hybrid memory systems. In this article, we first revisit the landscape of emerging NVMM technologies, and then survey the state-of-the-art studies of NVMM technologies. We classify those studies with a taxonomy according to different dimensions such as memory architectures, data persistence, performance improvement, energy saving, and wear leveling. Second, to demonstrate the best practices in building NVMM systems, we introduce our recent work of hybrid memory system designs from the dimensions of architectures, systems, and applications. At last, we present our vision of future research directions of NVMMs and shed some light on design challenges and opportunities.

DNA sequencing is the physical/biochemical process of identifying the location of the four bases (Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, Thymine) in a DNA strand. As semiconductor technology revolutionized computing, modern DNA sequencing technology (termed Nex t Generation Sequencing, NGS)revolutionized genomic research. As a result, modern NGS platforms can sequence hundreds of millions of short DNA fragments in parallel. The sequenced DNA fragments, representing the output of NGS platforms, are termed reads. Besides genomic variations, NGS imperfections induce noise in reads. Mapping each read to (the most similar portion of) a reference genome of the same species, i.e., read mapping, is a common critical first step in a diverse set of emerging bioinformatics applications. Mapping represents a search-heavy memory-intensive similarity matching problem, therefore, can greatly benefit from near-memory processing. Intuition suggests using fast associative search enabled by Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) by construction. However, the excessive energy consumption and lack of support for similarity matching (under NGS and genomic variation induced noise) renders direct application of TCAM infeasible, irrespective of volatility, where only non-volatile TCAM can accommodate the large memory footprint in an area-efficient way. This paper introduces GeNVoM, a scalable, energy-efficient and high-throughput solution. Instead of optimizing an algorithm developed for general-purpose computers or GPUs, GeNVoM rethinks the algorithm and non-volatile TCAM-based accelerator design together from the ground up. Thereby GeNVoM can improve the throughput by up to 113.5 times (3.6); the energy consumption, by up to 210.9 times (1.36), when compared to a GPU (accelerator) baseline, which represents one of the highest-throughput implementations known.
Flat combining (FC) is a synchronization paradigm in which a single thread, holding a global lock, collects requests by multiple threads for accessing a concurrent data structure and applies their combined requests to it. Although FC is sequential, i t significantly reduces synchronization overheads and cache invalidations and thus often provides better performance than that of lock-free implementations. The recent emergence of non-volatile memory (NVM) technologies increases the interest in the development of persistent (a.k.a. durable or recoverable) objects. These are objects that are able to recover from system failures and ensure consistency by retaining their state in NVM and fixing it, if required, upon recovery. Of particular interest are detectable objects that, in addition to ensuring consistency, allow recovery code to infer if a failed operation took effect before the crash and, if it did, obtain its response. In this work, we present the first FC-based persistent object. Specifically, we introduce a detectable FC-based implementation of a concurrent LIFO stack object. Our empirical evaluation establishes that thanks to the usage of flat combining, the novel stack algorithm requires a much smaller number of costly persistence instructions than competing algorithms and is therefore able to significantly outperform them.
Modern computing systems are embracing non-volatile memory (NVM) to implement high-capacity and low-cost main memory. Elevated operating voltages of NVM accelerate the aging of CMOS transistors in the peripheral circuitry of each memory bank. Aggress ive device scaling increases power density and temperature, which further accelerates aging, challenging the reliable operation of NVM-based main memory. We propose HEBE, an architectural technique to mitigate the circuit aging-related problems of NVM-based main memory. HEBE is built on three contributions. First, we propose a new analytical model that can dynamically track the aging in the peripheral circuitry of each memory bank based on the banks utilization. Second, we develop an intelligent memory request scheduler that exploits this aging model at run time to de-stress the peripheral circuitry of a memory bank only when its aging exceeds a critical threshold. Third, we introduce an isolation transistor to decouple parts of a peripheral circuit operating at different voltages, allowing the decoupled logic blocks to undergo long-latency de-stress operations independently and off the critical path of memory read and write accesses, improving performance. We evaluate HEBE with workloads from the SPEC CPU2017 Benchmark suite. Our results show that HEBE significantly improves both performance and lifetime of NVM-based main memory.
Information technologies require entangling data stability with encryption for a next generation of secure data storage. Current magnetic memories, ranging from low-density stripes up to high-density hard drives, can ultimately be detected using rout inely available probes or manipulated by external magnetic perturbations. Antiferromagnetic resistors feature unrivalled robustness but the stable resistive states reported scarcely differ by more than a fraction of a percent at room temperature. Here we show that the metamagnetic (ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic) transition in intermetallic Fe0.50Rh0.50 can be electrically controlled in a magnetoelectric heterostructure to reveal or cloak a given ferromagnetic state. From an aligned ferromagnetic phase, magnetic states are frozen into the antiferromagnetic phase by the application of an electric field, thus eliminating the stray field and likewise making it insensitive to external magnetic field. Application of a reverse electric field reverts the antiferromagnetic state to the original ferromagnetic state. Our work demonstrates the building blocks of a feasible, extremely stable, non-volatile, electrically addressable, low-energy dissipation, magnetoelectric multiferroic memory.

Nowadays, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has been a powerful tool in remote sensing by enhancing the information acquisition. During the InSAR processing, phase denoising of interferogram is a mandatory step for topography mapping a nd deformation monitoring. Over the last three decades, a large number of effective algorithms have been developed to do efforts on this topic. In this paper, we give a comprehensive overview of InSAR phase denoising methods, classifying the established and emerging algorithms into four main categories. The first two parts refer to the categories of traditional local filters and transformed-domain filters, respectively. The third part focuses on the category of nonlocal (NL) filters, considering their outstanding performances. Latter, some advanced methods based on new concept of signal processing are also introduced to show their potentials in this field. Moreover, several popular phase denoising methods are illustrated and compared by performing the numerical experiments using both simulated and measured data. The purpose of this paper is intended to provide necessary guideline and inspiration to related researchers by promoting the architecture development of InSAR signal processing.
