We derive the topological Kondo Hamiltonian describing a Y junction of three XX-spin chains connected to outer quantum Ising chains with different tilting angles for the Ising axis. We show that the tilting angles in the spin models play the role of the phases of the superconducting order parameters at the interfaces between bulk superconductors and one-dimensional conducting normal electronic wires. As a result, different tilting angles induce nonzero equilibrium spin (super)currents through the junction. Employing the renormalization group approach to the topological Kondo model, we derive the scaling formulas for the equilibrium spin currents. We argue that, by monitoring the crossover in the currents induced by the Kondo effect, it is possible to estimate the Kondo screening length. In particular, we prove how it is possible to tune the Kondo length by acting on the applied phases only; this enables us to map out the scaling properties by just tuning the tilting angles and the Kondo length accordingly.

We study a Y junction of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with an interaction that breaks both time-reversal and chain exchange symmetries, but not their product nor SU(2) symmetry. The boundary phase diagram features a stable disconnected fixed point at w eak coupling and a stable three-channel Kondo fixed point at strong coupling, separated by an unstable chiral fixed point at intermediate coupling. Using non-abelian bosonization and boundary conformal field theory, together with density matrix renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we characterize the signatures of these low-energy fixed points. In particular, we address the boundary entropy, the spin conductance and the temperature dependence of the scalar spin chirality and the magnetic susceptibility at the boundary.
We show that a junction of three off-critical quantum Ising chains can be regarded as a quantum spin chain realization of the two-channel spin-1/2 overscreened Kondo effect with two superconducting leads. We prove that, as long as the Kondo temperatu re is larger than the superconducting gap, the equivalent Kondo model flows towards the 2 channel Kondo fixed point. We argue that our system provides the first controlled realization of 2 channel Kondo effect with superconducting leads. This, besides its the theoretical interest, is of importance for potential applications to a number of context, including the analysis of the quantum entanglement properties of a Kondo system.
Quantum entanglement permeates the complex ground states of correlated electron materials defying single-particle descriptions. Coupled magnetic atoms have potential as model systems for entanglement in condensed matter giving the opportunity to crea te artificial many-body states which can be controlled by tuning the underlying interactions. They provide an avenue to unravel the complexities of correlated-electron materials. Here we use low temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and atomic manipulation to tune entanglement in chains of magnetic atoms. We find that a Kondo singlet state can emerge from this entanglement. The many electron Kondo state is based on the screening of the entangled spin ground state of the chain by substrate electrons and can be engineered to envelop at least ten magnetic atoms. The concomitant Kondo resonance measured in the differential conductance enables the electric read-out of entanglement. By tuning composition and coupling strength within atomic chains it is possible to create model spin chains with defined entanglement. This lays the foundation for a new class of experiments to construct exotic correlated-electron materials atom by atom.

The nature of magnetic order and transport properties near surfaces is a topic of great current interest. Here we model metal-insulator interfaces with a multi-layer system governed by a tight-binding Hamiltonian in which the interaction is non-zero on one set of adjacent planes and zero on another. As the interface hybridization is tuned, magnetic and metallic properties undergo an evolution that reflects the competition between anti-ferromagnetism and (Kondo) singlet formation in a scenario similar to that occurring in heavy-fermion materials. For a few-layer system at intermediate hybridization, a Kondo insulating phase results where magnetic order and conductivity are suppressed in all layers. As more insulating layers are added, magnetic order is restored in all correlated layers except that at the interface. Residual signs of Kondo physics are however evident in the bulk as a substantial reduction of the order parameter in the 2-3 layers immediately adjacent to the interfacial one. We find no signature of long range magnetic order in the metallic
Proximity of two different materials leads to an intricate coupling of quasiparticles so that an unprecedented electronic state is often realized at the interface. Here, we demonstrate a resonance-type many-body ground state in graphene, a non-magnet ic two-dimensional Dirac semimetal, when grown on SmB6, a Kondo insulator, via thermal decomposition of fullerene molecules. This ground state is typically observed in three-dimensional magnetic materials with correlated electrons. Above the characteristic Kondo temperature of the substrate, the electron band structure of pristine graphene remains almost intact. As temperature decreases, however, the Dirac fermions of graphene become hybridized with the Sm 4f states. Remarkable enhancement of the hybridization and Kondo resonance is observed with further cooling and increasing charge carrier density of graphene, evidencing the Kondo screening of the Sm 4f local magnetic moment by the conduction electrons of graphene at the interface. These findings manifest the realization of the Kondo effect in graphene by the proximity of SmB6 that is tuned by temperature and charge carrier density of graphene.
