The magnetic susceptibility of the 1/1 approximants to icosahedral quasicrystals in a series of Cd85-xMgxTb15 (x = 5, 10, 15, 20) alloys was investigated in detail. The occurrence of antiferromagnetic to spin-glass-like transition was noticed by increasing Mg. Transmission electron microscopy analysis evidenced a correlation between the magnetic transition and suppression of the monoclinic superlattice ordering with respect to the orientation of the Cd4 tetrahedron at T > 100 K. The possible origins of this phenomenon were discussed in detail. The occurrence of the antiferromagnetic to spin-glass -like magnetic transition is associated with the combination of chemical disorder due to a randomized substitution of Cd with Mg and the orientational disorder of the Cd4 tetrahedra.

A comprehensive theoretical investigation on the field-driven reorientation transitions in uniaxial multilayers with antiferromagnetic coupling is presented. It is based on a complete survey of the one-dimensional solutions for the basic phenomenolog ical (micromagnetic) model that describes the magnetic properties of finite stacks made from ferromagnetic layers coupled antiferromagnetically through spacer layers. The general structure of the phase diagrams is analysed. At a high ratio of uniaxial anisotropy to antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange, only a succession of collinear magnetic states is possible. With increasing field first-order (metamagnetic) transitions occur from the antiferromagnetic ground-state to a set of degenerate ferrimagnetic states and to the saturated ferromagnetic state. At low anisotropies, a first-order transition from the antiferromagnetic ground-state to an inhomogeneous spin-flop state occurs. Between these two regions, transitional magnetic phases occupy the range of intermediate anisotropies. Detailed and quantitative phase diagrams are given for the basic model of antiferromagnetic multilayer systems with N = 2 to 16 layers. The connection of the phase diagrams with the spin-reorientation transitions in bulk antiferromagnets is discussed. The limits of low anisotropy and large numbers of layers are analysed by two different representations of the magnetic energy, namely, in terms of finite chains of staggered vectors and in a general continuum form. It is shown that the phenomena widely described as ``surface spin-flop are driven only by the cut exchange interactions and the non-compensated magnetic moment at the surface layers of a stacked antiferromagnetic system.
Temperature dependence of the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra at the Pr $L_{3}$- and Tb $L_{3}$-edges was measured for the (Pr$_{1-y}$Tb$_{y})_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$ system, in which a metal-insulator (MI) and spin-state (SS) transition took place simultaneously at a critical temperature $T_{rm MI}$. A small increase in the valence of the terbium ion was found below $T_{rm MI}$, besides the enhancement of the praseodymium valence; the trivalent states, which are stable at room temperature, change to a 3+/4+ ionic mixture at low temperatures. In particular for the $y$=0.2 sample, the average valence determined at 8 K amounts to 3.03+ and 3.25+ for the Tb and Pr ion, respectively. In analogous (Pr$_{1-y}$RE$_{y})_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_{3}$ samples (RE=Sm and Eu), in which the MI-SS transition also took place, no valence shift of the RE ion was detected in the XANES spectra at the RE ion $L_{3}$-edge. The role of the substituted RE ion for the Pr-site on the MI-SS transition is discussed.
The composition dependence of the structural transition between the monoclinic 1T$^{prime}$ and orthorhombic T$_{d}$ phases in the Mo$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$Te$_{2}$ Weyl semimetal was investigated by elastic neutron scattering on single crystals up to $x app rox 0.54$. First observed in MoTe$_{2}$, the transition from T$_{d}$ to 1T$^{prime}$ is accompanied by an intermediate pseudo-orthorhombic phase, T$_{d}^{*}$. Upon doping with W, the T$_{d}^{*}$ phase vanishes by $x approx 0.34$. Above this concentration, a phase coexistence behavior with both T$_{d}$ and 1T$^{prime}$ is observed instead. The interlayer in-plane positioning parameter $delta$, which relates to the 1T$^{prime}$ $beta$ angle, decreases with temperature as well as with W substitution, likely due to strong anharmonicity in the interlayer interactions. The temperature width of the phase coexistence remains almost constant up to $x approx 0.54$, in contrast to the broadening reported under pressure.
We investigate the possibility of using structural disorder to induce a topological phase in a solid state system. Using first-principles calculations, we introduce structural disorder in the trivial insulator BiTeI and observe the emergence of a top ological insulating phase. By modifying the bonding environments, the crystal-field splitting is enhanced and the spin-orbit interaction produces a band inversion in the bulk electronic structure. Analysis of the Wannier charge centers and the surface electronic structure reveals a strong topological insulator with Dirac surface states. Finally, we propose a prescription for inducing topological states from disorder in crystalline materials. Understanding how local environments produce topological phases is a key step for predicting disordered and amorphous topological materials.
We have performed magnetic susceptibility and neutron scattering measurements on polycrystalline Ag-In-RE (RE: rare-earth) 1/1 approximants. In the magnetic susceptibility measurements, for most of the RE elements, inverse susceptibility shows linear behaviour in a wide temperature range, confirming well localized isotropic moments for the RE$^{3+}$ ions. Exceptionally for the light RE elements, such as Ce and Pr, non-linear behaviour was observed, possibly due to significant crystalline field splitting or valence fluctuation. For RE = Tb, the susceptibility measurement clearly shows a bifurcation of the field-cooled and zero-field-cooled susceptibility at $T_{rm f} = 3.7$~K, suggesting a spin-glass-like freezing. On the other hand, neutron scattering measurements detect significant development of short-range antiferromagnetic spin correlations in elastic channel, which accompanied by a broad peak at $hbaromega = 4$~meV in inelastic scattering spectrum. These features have striking similarity to those in the Zn-Mg-Tb quasicrystals, suggesting that the short-range spin freezing behaviour is due to local high symmetry clusters commonly seen in both the systems.
