Non linear regression models are a standard tool for modeling real phenomena, with several applications in machine learning, ecology, econometry... Estimating the parameters of the model has garnered a lot of attention during many years. We focus here on a recursive method for estimating parameters of non linear regressions. Indeed, these kinds of methods, whose most famous are probably the stochastic gradient algorithm and its averaged version, enable to deal efficiently with massive data arriving sequentially. Nevertheless, they can be, in practice, very sensitive to the case where the eigen-values of the Hessian of the functional we would like to minimize are at different scales. To avoid this problem, we first introduce an online Stochastic Gauss-Newton algorithm. In order to improve the estimates behavior in case of bad initialization, we also introduce a new Averaged Stochastic Gauss-Newton algorithm and prove its asymptotic efficiency.

Estimating the mixing density of a mixture distribution remains an interesting problem in statistics literature. Using a stochastic approximation method, Newton and Zhang (1999) introduced a fast recursive algorithm for estimating the mixing density of a mixture. Under suitably chosen weights the stochastic approximation estimator converges to the true solution. In Tokdar et. al. (2009) the consistency of this recursive estimation method was established. However, the proof of consistency of the resulting estimator used independence among observations as an assumption. Here, we extend the investigation of performance of Newtons algorithm to several dependent scenarios. We first prove that the original algorithm under certain conditions remains consistent when the observations are arising form a weakly dependent process with fixed marginal with the target mixture as the marginal density. For some of the common dependent structures where the original algorithm is no longer consistent, we provide a modification of the algorithm that generates a consistent estimator.

Solutions of the bivariate, linear errors-in-variables estimation problem with unspecified errors are expected to be invariant under interchange and scaling of the coordinates. The appealing model of normally distributed true values and errors is uni dentified without additional information. I propose a prior density that incorporates the fact that the slope and variance parameters together determine the covariance matrix of the unobserved true values but is otherwise diffuse. The marginal posterior density of the slope is invariant to interchange and scaling of the coordinates and depends on the data only through the sample correlation coefficient and ratio of standard deviations. It covers the interval between the two ordinary least squares estimates but diminishes rapidly outside of it. I introduce the R package leiv for computing the posterior density, and I apply it to examples in astronomy and method comparison.
Mixed linear regression (MLR) model is among the most exemplary statistical tools for modeling non-linear distributions using a mixture of linear models. When the additive noise in MLR model is Gaussian, Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is a w idely-used algorithm for maximum likelihood estimation of MLR parameters. However, when noise is non-Gaussian, the steps of EM algorithm may not have closed-form update rules, which makes EM algorithm impractical. In this work, we study the maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of MLR model when the additive noise has non-Gaussian distribution. In particular, we consider the case that noise has Laplacian distribution and we first show that unlike the the Gaussian case, the resulting sub-problems of EM algorithm in this case does not have closed-form update rule, thus preventing us from using EM in this case. To overcome this issue, we propose a new algorithm based on combining the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) with EM algorithm idea. Our numerical experiments show that our method outperforms the EM algorithm in statistical accuracy and computational time in non-Gaussian noise case.
For a nonlinear regression model the information matrices of designs depend on the parameter of the model. The adaptive Wynn-algorithm for D-optimal design estimates the parameter at each step on the basis of the employed design points and observed r esponses so far, and selects the next design point as in the classical Wynn-algorithm for D-optimal design. The name `Wynn-algorithm is in honor of Henry P. Wynn who established the latter `classical algorithm in his 1970 paper. The asymptotics of the sequences of designs and maximum likelihood estimates generated by the adaptive algorithm is studied for an important class of nonlinear regression models: generalized linear models whose (univariate) response variables follow a distribution from a one-parameter exponential family. Under the assumptions of compactness of the experimental region and of the parameter space together with some natural continuity assumptions it is shown that the adaptive ML-estimators are strongly consistent and the design sequence is asymptotically locally D-optimal at the true parameter point. If the true parameter point is an interior point of the parameter space then under some smoothness assumptions the asymptotic normality of the adaptive ML-estimators is obtained.
In this article we study the existence and strong consistency of GEE estimators, when the generalized estimating functions are martingales with random coefficients. Furthermore, we characterize estimating functions which are asymptotically optimal.
