An indispensable step to understand collective magnetic phenomena in rare-earth compounds is the determination of spatially-anisotropic single-ion properties resulting from spin-orbit coupling and crystal field (CF). The CF Hamiltonian has a discrete energy spectrum -- accessible to spectroscopic probes such as neutron scattering -- controlled by a number of independent parameters reflecting the point-symmetry of the magnetic sites. Determining these parameters in low-symmetry systems is often challenging. Here, we describe a general method to analyze CF excitation spectra using adjustable effective point-charges. We benchmark our method to existing neutron-scattering measurements on pyrochlore rare-earth oxides and obtain a universal point-charge model that describes a large family of related materials. We adapt this model to the newly discovered tripod Kagome magnets ($R_{3}$Mg$_2$Sb$_{3}$O$_{14}$, $R$ = Tb, Ho, Er, Yb) for which we report broadband inelastic neutron-scattering spectra. Analysis of these data using adjustable point-charges yields the CF wave-functions for each compound. From this, we calculate thermomagnetic properties that accurately reflect our measurements on powder samples, and predict the effective gyromagnetic tensor for pseudo-spin degrees of freedom -- a crucial step to understand the exotic collective properties of these kagome magnets at low temperature. We present further applications of our method to other tripod kagome materials and triangular rare-earth compounds $R$MgGaO$_4$ ($R$ =Yb, Tm). Overall, this study establishes a widely applicable methodology to predict CF and single-ion properties of rare-earth compounds based on interpretable and adjustable models of effective point-charges.

A method to calculate the crystal field parameters {it ab initio} is proposed and applied to trivalent rare earth impurities in yttrium aluminate and to Tb$^{3+}$ ion in TbAlO$_3$. To determine crystal field parameters local Hamiltonian expressed in basis of Wannier functions is expanded in a series of spherical tensor operators. Wannier functions are obtained by transforming the Bloch functions calculated using the density functional theory based program. The results show that the crystal field is continuously decreasing as the number of $4f$ electrons increases and that the hybridization of $4f$ states with the states of oxygen ligands is important. Theory is confronted with experiment for Nd$^{3+}$ and Er$^{3+}$ ions in YAlO$_3$ and for Tb$^{3+}$ ion in TbAlO$_3$ and a fair agreement is found.

We report a systematic study on the crystal growth of the rare-earth titanates $R_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ ($R$ = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Yb and Lu) and Y-doped Tb$_{2-x}$Y$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ ($x$ = 0.2 and 1) using an optical floating-zone method. High-quality sing le crystals were successfully obtained and the growth conditions were carefully optimized. The oxygen pressure was found to be the most important parameter and the appropriate ones are 0.1--0.4 MPa, depending on the radius of rare-earth ions. The growth rate is another parameter and was found to be 2.5--4 mm/h for different rare-earth ions. X-ray diffraction data demonstrated the good crystallinity of these crystals. The basic physical properties of these crystals were characterized by the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements.
Alkali metal rare-earth chalcogenide $ARECh2$ (A=alkali or monovalent metal, RE=rare earth, Ch=O, S, Se, Te), is a large family of quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidates we discovered recently. Unlike $YbMgGaO4$, most members in the family except for t he oxide ones, have relatively small crystalline electric-field (CEF) excitation levels, particularly the first ones. This makes the conventional Curie-Weiss analysis at finite temperatures inapplicable and CEF excitations may play an essential role in understanding the low-energy spin physics. Here we considered an effective magnetic Hamiltonian incorporating CEF excitations and spin-spin interactions, to accurately describe thermodynamics in such a system. By taking $NaYbSe2$ as an example, we were able to analyze magnetic susceptibility, magnetization under pulsed high fields and heat capacity in a systematic and comprehensive way. The analysis allows us to produce accurate anisotropic exchange coupling energies and unambiguously determine a crossover temperature ($sim$25 K in the case of $NaYbSe2$), below which CEF effects fade away and pure spin-spin interactions stand out. We further validated the effective picture by successfully explaining the anomalous temperature dependence of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectral width. The effective scenario in principle can be generalized to other rare-earth spin systems with small CEF excitations.
Spin-dependent electric dipole operators are investigated group-theoretically for the emergence of an electric dipole induced by a single spin or by two spins, where the spin dependences are completely classified up to the quadratic order. For a sing le spin, a product of spin operators behaves as an even-parity electric quadrupole operator, which differs from an odd-parity electric dipole. The lack of the inversion symmetry allows the even- and odd-parity mixing, which leads to the electric dipole described by the electric quadruple operators. Point-group tables are given for classification of the possible spin-dependent electric dipoles and for the qualitative analysis of multiferroic properties, such as an emergent electric dipole moment coexisting with a magnetic moment, electromagnon excitation, and directional dichroism. The results can be applied to a magnetic ion in crystals or embedded in molecules at a site without the inversion symmetry. In the presence of an inversion symmetry, the electric dipole does not appear for a single spin. This is not the case for the electric dipole induced by two spins with antisymmetric spin dependence, which is known as vector spin chirality, in the presence of the inversion center between the two spins. In the absence of the inversion center, symmetric spin-dependent electric dipoles are also relevant. The detailed analysis of various symmetries of two-spin states is applied to spin dimer systems and the related multiferroic properties.
Motivated by the recent progress of high-frequency ultrasonic measurements, we propose a theory of magnetoacoustic resonance as a microscopic probe for quadrupole degrees of freedom hidden in magnetic materials. A local strain driven by an acoustic w ave couples to electronic states of a magnetic ion through various quadrupole-strain couplings, and this provides a periodically time-dependent oscillating field. As a typical two-level system with the quadrupole, we consider a non-Kramers doublet and investigate single- and multiphonon-mediated transition processes on the basis of the Floquet theory. An analytic form of the transition probability is derived within the weak coupling theory, which helps us analyze the magnetoacoustic quadrupole resonance. We apply the theory to realistic non-Kramers doublet systems for the f2 configuration in Oh and D4h symmetries, and discuss how to identify the relevant quadrupole by controlling the quadrupole-strain coupling with an applied magnetic field in ultrasonic measurements.
