Elementary electronic excitations, which are due to the Coulomb-field scatterings, present the diverse phenomena in 3D, 2D, 1D-nanotube electron gases, graphene and carbon nanotubes. The critical mechanisms cover the dimension-dependent bare Coulomb potentials, energy dispersions, and free/valence carrier density. They are responsible for the main features, the available excitation channels (the electron-hole regions), the joint van Hove singularities, the undamped/damped collective excitations at small/sufficiently high transferred momenta, the momentum dependences of plasmon frequencies (acoustic and optical modes), and their categories (the intraband and inter-pi-band plasmons). There exists certain significant similarities and difference among various systems. The (momentum/ angular momentum, frequency)-excitation phase diagrams are directly reflected in the propagation of plasma waves.

We present a theoretical study of the collective quasiparticle excitations responsible for the electromagnetic response of ultrathin plane-parallel homogeneous periodic single-wall carbon nanotube arrays and weakly inhomogeneous single-wall carbon na notube films. We show that in addition to varying film composition, the collective response can be controlled by varying the film thickness. For single-type nanotube arrays, the real part of the dielectric response shows a broad negative refraction band near a quantum interband transition of the constituent nanotube, whereby the system behaves as a hyperbolic metamaterial at higher frequencies than those classical plasma oscillations have to offer. By decreasing nanotube diameters it is possible to push this negative refraction into the visible region, and using weakly inhomogeneous multi-type nanotube films broadens its bandwidth.
Graphene and carbon nanotubes represent the ultimate size limit of one and two-dimensional nanoelectromechanical resonators. Because of their reduced dimensionality, graphene and carbon nanotubes display unusual mechanical behavior; in particular, th eir dynamics is highly nonlinear. Here, we review several types of nonlinear behavior in resonators made from nanotubes and graphene. We first discuss an unprecedented scenario where damping is described by a nonlinear force. This scenario is supported by several experimental facts: (i) the quality factor varies with the amplitude of the motion as a power law whose exponent coincides with the value predicted by the nonlinear damping model, (ii) hysteretic behavior (of the motional amplitude as a function of driving frequency) is absent in some of our resonators even for large driving forces, as expected when nonlinear damping forces are large, and (iii) when we quantify the linear damping force (by performing parametric excitation measurements) we find that it is significantly smaller than the nonlinear damping force. We then review parametric excitation measurements, an alternative actuation method which is based on nonlinear dynamics. Finally, we discuss experiments where the mechanical motion is coupled to electron transport through a nanotube. The coupling can be made so strong that the associated force acting on the nanotube becomes highly nonlinear with displacement and velocity. Overall, graphene and nanotube resonators hold promise for future studies on classical and quantum nonlinear dynamics.

We report on devices based on graphene charge detectors (CDs) capacitively coupled to graphene and carbon nanotube quantum dots (QDs). We focus on back action effects of the CD on the probed QD. A strong influence of the bias voltage applied to the C D on the current through the QD is observed. Depending on the charge state of the QD the current through the QD can either strongly increase or completely reverse as a response to the applied voltage on the CD. To describe the observed behavior we employ two simple models based on single electron transport in QDs with asymmetrically broadened energy distributions of the source and the drain leads. The models successfully explain the back action effects. The extracted distribution broadening shows a linear dependency on the bias voltage applied to the CD. We discuss possible mechanisms mediating the energy transfer between the CD and QD and give an explanation for the origin of the observed asymmetry.
Recently nanomechanical devices composed of a long stationary inner carbon nanotube and a shorter, slowly-rotating outer tube have been fabricated. In this Letter, we study the possibility of using such devices as adiabatic quantum pumps. Using the B rouwer formula, we employ a Greens function technique to determine the pumped charge from one end of the inner tube to the other, driven by the rotation of a chiral outer nanotube. We show that there is virtually no pumping if the chiral angle of the two nanotubes is the same, but for optimal chiralities the pumped charge can be a significant fraction of a theoretical upper bound.

We report on the nano-electron beam assisted fabrication of atomically sharp iron-based tips and on the creation of a nano-soldering iron for nano-interconnects using Fe-filled multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). High energy electron beam machinin g has been proven a powerful tool to modify desired nanostructures for technological applications and to form molecular junctions and interconnections between carbon nanotubes. Recent studies showed the high degree of complexity in the creation of direct interconnections between multiwalled and CNTs having dissimilar diameters. Our technique allows for carving a MWCNT into a nanosoldering iron that was demonstrated capable of joining two separated halves of a tube. This approach could easily be extended to the interconnection of two largely dissimilar CNTs, between a CNT and a nanowire or between two nanowires.
